In this video I unbox, install and use the new Harrison Specialties vacuum chuck I purchased from Amazon. I tested the chuck on the ash bowl that was turned ,ebonized and embellished in the video in the link below. The finish got ruined when unmounting from hotmelt glue so in this video I repair the finish. This was not a paid product review, I purchased this item from Amazon and the review is completely unbias. I hope you enjoy the video, thank you to all who watch!

If you take a small piece of hdpe, turn it to a slight taper plug that will fit the hole in the handwheel, then drill a hole just slightly larger than the vacuum tube. That would protect the vacuum tube.

Thank you Lewis for demonstrating the setup. Woodturning isn’t a cheap hobby but at least one that provides satisfaction and even a return on investments. Now with the advent of YT “Lives” and “Premiers” it even provides a sense of community across borders and “ the pond”.

Rig up a stand for the back end of vac chuck, and utilize that for setting up your gauges. That way no rubbing, and you have a stable mount for everything. Another great upload Lewis! I just bought the Rikon 3/4 hp grinder with a 180g & 600g CBN wheels from Harrison (nothing else with it, no guards, or platforms). Just need the vari grind to get here.... Unfortunately I didnt see the fine print, serves me right for not reading it all. So using my carbides until I can grind correctly. Harrison is a good company though. Also turned my first cup today, didn't come out to bad. When I get my ipad set up I'll send you a pic. The finish on that bowl is amazing! Thanks again for all your comments and answers to my questions.

Put a bearing that fits loosely enough that you can remove it each time. Instead of using tape. You could put a rubber bushing on inside of bearing and leave it in the machine

For another option besides paint, I recently purchased a product called Speedball Supper Black and used it on a shallow bowl or thick platter. I finished it with beeswax and it turned out pretty good. I have been looking for a somewhat inexpensive vacuum chuck for a long time but no matter how much I look they never get more affordable. In the mean time, I made two sets of expansion leaf's for my cole chuck. I have to swivel the head on my lathe to use the larger of the two but it will hold a very large bowl or platter. I would have posted a picture but I guess commie tube doesn't allow pictures in a comment.

Check the manual or with the manufacturer for the duty cycle of the vacuum pump, that way you know how long you can run it without worry of it shutting off on you.

Technical question. I see lathes for sale from $250 - $4000. What size, strenght, speed required for things like bowls, cups, etc. ? For starting up. Thanks for your generosity of knowledge. Joe
@TheKlondikeCraftsman
@TheKlondikeCraftsman 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Joseph, the lathe I am using in the videos is the first and only lathe I have purchased. My philosophy it buy your last lathe first. I had the benefit of learning on someone else’s lathe to know it was something I wanted to do long term. Regarding specifications, I suggest minimum 2 HP, variable speed, reversible with a swing that will allow you to do 18-20”. That will not be cheap but it will last a lifetime. People buy beginner lathes for $500 and upgrade losing money. They get an intermediate lathe and upgrade losing money. If you have done some turning on a friends lathe or at a club and you are passionate about it, you will save money by going directly to the lathe I’ve described right off the bat. In addition, your turning experience will be better on a professional grade lathe as well. Best of luck and thank you for watching!

Beautiful piece... Some carvers..generally dremel and chainsaw...accent their wood by fire..shou sugi ban...which leaves the banding and black tints on the grains after scouring off the charcoal from the deep burn...some go further and add color tints... It seems you have..by buffing the paint into the grain..removed a step... I always enjoy the thinness you achieve...beautiful...thank you...🌿🌿🌿
