I was astonished at the shape of the edge when you stopped the lathe to turn the piece. On the screen the shape of the piece of wood was not obvious. I admire your ability to spot the potential lurking in the most unpromising (to me) materials. Your natural edge forms are my favourites, and this undulant edge with the striking pale layer under the bark is outstanding.

Yew is one of my favorite woods, there isn't much out there that challenges the grain and colour of yew, imo. I did a chainsaw job for a big house with quite substantial grounds several years ago. They wanted a few trees removed for an access road they were putting in for something. One of the trees was an ornamental yew tree apparently from Japan. They didn't care much about it and had no real use for the wood outside of burning it. They let me take as much of it as I could fit in the van, and after 2 years of drying and curing was rewarded with one of the craziest grained and coloured woods I have ever encountered! 😀

I've had a vision for the last 55 years of a timber frame log and stone house that I designed when I was 15. This vase would fit perfectly into it in a place of honor in the foyer (though I'll never build the house, not needing the enormous debt it would generate, not at 70 years old).

Simply gorgeous! I love projects like this where you don’t need stain or color, you just provide oil and let the wood speak for itself. I always find myself wondering about the output from the lathe. For some of these projects with such unique color and grain, I’d be fascinated to see you take the larger wood-curls and peelings, combine and compress the heck out of them, and then resin and grind it into something unique. Dunno if that would work well or not, but might be fun to try!

Nice. I have a beautiful lamp that my uncle turned out of a piece of Pacific Yew, forty years ago. I found some yew when I was hand logging on the BC coast. Gave some to my father who gave it to my uncle. My mom bought the lamp and gave it to my wife and I when we got married. It has been my bedside lamp for a long time.

That's a beautiful piece of wood given the perfect shape to show it off. Not much delays Hubby on his way out in the morning, but if I get the notification that you've uploaded, it's surprising how slowly he's able to get ready (without taking an eye off the screen lol). He's as in awe of your talent as I am, and he used to be a tree surgeon, so he loves the wood for its own sake to start with. Seeing it becoming a work of art on top of its natural beauty is the icing on his very big cake!

Lucky woodturner who found such a perfect piece of yew ! No cracks , thin softwood , ideal growth , where the hell does it come from ? In western France you surely won''t find such one ! ( I would have previously removed much for a better balance and also not even thought of cutting the endgrain facing me , no easy task but obviously the better idea !) , congratulations !
