Driving slowly around horses, buggies, bicycles, motorcycles, pedestrians... All were covered extensively when I took driver's education WAY back in the 1980's. The danger is not the slow traffic, but the drivers who don't pay attention to sharing the road.

If the horse bolted into the intersection, no law could have saved them from what happened. Making more laws is not the answer. Perhaps this will never be solved.

@@MA-mh1vs Plus she was a little frail girl and at 11 I doubt they are scanning the roads to do defensive driving. Like do not pull all the way up to any stop sign stop aways back to be sure of oncoming traffic on both sides. Also I dont think she was strong enough to pull back hard the reins. I think they should be 14 or older to drive a buggy.Have to be 16 to drive a car.

@@misslottieish This was not caused by the child making a mistake but a horse that panicked for some reason. Age or strength would not matter if there was not enough time to react to the bolt. A horse bolting at the intersection would give her literally a second or two before being in the path of a car. I am not sure an adult could have prevented this tragedy.

I heard no mention of a parent in the buggy with these three children. Why not?? A child cannot always control a big horse. Who can see three children in safety vests when two of the children are sitting inside the buggy?? Underage children SHOULD NOT be allowed to drive a buggy on the road unsupervised. RIP to those children who are now with the angels.
@Momma_Tomma

The children were on their way to school just a couple miles down the road. It was his first time driving alone. Apparently he had shown he could drive this horse just fine, and was given the chance. Children as young as him handle horses all the time, especially in this community. They are very familiar with them. It doesn't matter your age or size, if a horse gets spooked, you're not going to handle it very well. I have seen seasoned draft horsemen lose control of their horses because one got spooked. It was a freak accident. Let's not toss blame.

Buggy signs are posted everywhere. And the highway headed south has buggy lanes on both sides. And the community is thinking of doing the Northbound highway and the East bound highway that way too. Makes it a lot safer for our Amish friends to get around safely.

Just had a friend bail an Amish buggy horse. The kill pen is in New York State and buggy horse was from Ohio. The poor Standardbred horse was in a horrible crash. They sent him to auction for slaughter, instead of euthanizing him. He had a horrible wound on his back leg "road rash" and a broken knee cap. He is on the mend. Such a nice horse. He is under vet's care. I don't think much of his former owners! I agree a child or children have no business handling a buggy or open cart on a busy road. It's also a bit hilly in the area, so sometimes, you don't see them when coming over a hill. A few years ago, there was a driver that came over a hill too fast, didn't see the Amish buggy, and hit it. All the people in the buggy survived, but the horse pulling the carriage didn't. My condolences to the two kids killed in this crash, as well as the other in the hospital. And yes, pretty much all horse buggies in my area have reflectors on them.

I don't know why people always sing the praises of the "Amish people", declaring them to be "kind" to all. It is not true. They force women and girls to marry and give birth before they are ready, women are treated like breeding cows, to keep having babies, over and over. Physical and emotional abuse is rampant through Amish communities and there are plenty of cases of sexual abuse as well - most of which never gets reported. I've no doubt wives are routinely raped, although they might put a label of "wifely duty" on it. It is a miserable life for many too undereducated and frightened to leave. How "kind" is it to "shun" and totally turn your backs on members who have left the community? They are utterly rejected, there is no kindness in their hearts for those who feel called to leave and live a different kind of life. It is also a brutal life for the animals they raise, the horses in particular.

How many 11 year olds are navigating traffic with a large animal that is not predictable. No school bus...? I can’t see this as Gods will. No one is even mentioning that no child should have the responsibility to drive a horse and wagon to school 5 days per week? Who is okay with this negligence by parents of these children driving with no license? Insurance? 😂😂😂😂😂😂 sorry this cannot be true in America in 2023!!!😢

@@ellecampbell3271 According to The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s (CPSC) latest report, from 2016 through 2018, there were 2,211 deaths in the United States associated with OHVs, which includes all-terrain vehicles, recreational off-highway vehicles and utility-terrain vehicles. ATVs accounted for nearly three-quarters of the deaths. Nearly 300 deaths were among children under the age of 16. Maybe it’s not large animals that are the problem. Please don’t judge others by your values, culture or religion.

@@Hawkeyeis35 I am questioning the legality of 11 year old children who are driving buggies pulled by horses on a public road in America. What does the law say? Don’t need to infer anything about my right to ask questions. I can’t understand this reasoning. Just wow.

My deepest condolences to the parents and sister of these precious children. There is a unique sorrow when a parent looses a child , a shock for which no parent can prepare when the death ( deaths in this situation ) are the result of a tragic accident. May God comfort and strengthen every family member as they grieve. It seems prudent, to me, that the driver of a buggy on shared public roads should meet some age requirement. An 11 year old is quite capable of driving the buggy, but do they have enough life experience to manage under sudden stress when a motorized vehicle is involved ? This is a good time to review the safety issues common to driving buggies and automobiles on a shared roadway.

People need to respect these people. I have almost had crashes with people who pass buggies when they can't see if someone is coming at them. People need to be aware that horses are not cars. They get spooked. Slow down and stop putting others' lives in danger.

I agree with you. There are definitely some ugly things about Amish society. But many other denominations (especially Calvinism) used to believe the same thing. Is coming down with appendicitis really 'God's will'? Used to be a death sentence.

Can you find a way to send condolences to the family? I doubt they're able to see how much people care. Also, the buggies aren't unsafe as frequently as pedestrians, bikers, and motorists are impatient and reckless when sharing the road with them.

The Amish buggies shouldn't be allowed to let children drive the buggies. And their should be a stricked driving test for anyone under 18 years of age to take. The Amish man said that it was in God's plan that the children had died. It wasn't in God's plan to let a 11 year old drive a horse and buggy. It was a foolish man not using common sense..
