Woodworkers have been lied to

In this video, I’ll show you how to build a Hutch. For this build, I used a combination of walnut hardwood, white oak hardwood, and white oak veneered plywood. I used plywood to build the cabinet system, which I will cover in this part of the build. There are a lot of woodworking techniques involved with this build, from the joinery to the compound miters on the casework, which adds some dimension to the piece. Storage, especially in the kitchen, always seems to be an issue, so this cabinet solves that problem and adds some much-needed space.

Pre-glue whenever possible. Another thing I do is apply the edge bands onto my component parts before final cutting, rabbeting or dado-ing. I don't get mitered corners, but then again, I don't have to do rocket surgery math for compound miters, either. Lazy, maybe. But when all your joints look uniform across the piece, it starts to appear intentional. Another trick I do is to take a piece of scrap plywood, smoosh it between the fence and sawblade, and then tap about 1/64" fatter to cut the banding. I've makes the flush sanding fast and less risky in blowing through the .0000001" thick veneer. Yes, I hate plywood as well.

Yeah that’s definitely a good way to approach it as well. I do that with some pieces too, it really just depends on what the design dictates. And I agree, plywood veneer seems to be getting thinner and thinner.

Just a quick tip, I know you said you don’t pay attention to growth rings as long as you bought from a reputable source etc., then in the next scene you have the white oak with all those bows. Not a gotcha moment, just a heads up that If you check the growth rings there, and flip them every other, that should help balance out those bad bows and straighten it out a bit better

Yeah I had one board with a bow in it there but even without alternating rings the panel flattened out just fine. As long as you use dominos or biscuits you can generally flatten that out. I also like to hit my panels with a hand plane once they are glued up which is why I leave them a bit thick.

Pre glue almost every time. Great project! I’m currently getting a lot of use out of my 1400 too. I’d be interested in your skip planing technique so I can compare notes. I don’t think I do it often enough as I’m afraid of wobbly panels.

When it comes to skip planing I just make sure my boards are 90ish percent flat when I pick them out at the lumberyard, then just run the flattest of the two sides through first at a light pass then flip it and go all in. It works well most of the time with s2s lumber but occasionally I have a light twist to work out.

Pre glue. It’s the only way. I’ll still do a little finis sand but running the grits on inside labels is too much of a pain in the ass. Love the design of this. Looks great.

Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! When it comes to edge banding I do it both ways, it really just depends on the project and how the parts are coming off the plywood sheet. Sometimes it's just easier to do them after the fact.

if I use dominos in a panel glue up there is a 100% chance I'm going to cut into a domino. It makes no difference if I plan ahead and mark everything. I swear those things move on their own.

Pre glue! For interior parts. In some cases I'll apply finish to the interior before glue-up, it all depends. In my experience a compression bit leaves a great finish but depending on the diameter and cutting length the portion of upcut on the bottom will vary and this may be the cause of the tearout you're experiencing (the bit is not low enough for the downcut to actually engage the material).

did you look at any 20" planer options or only 15"? I'm in the same boat now, eying the 20" Oliver but wondering if the footprint (and added price) is worth it.

Yeah, I did actually and very nearly went with the 20” model but ultimately landed on the 15” just to save some space. Things are already pretty tight in my shop so I think for me it was the right choice but if I had more room I probably would have got with the 20”.

Thanks man, I appreciate it. Yeah, this is the first real project I have used it on and it was really solid. I have other sleds, but those had very slight, manageable, variables. This one, does not. Every cut is dead on and square which is really important for the long miter cuts. I did get both, but if I had to choose one, I would get the right side so you can tilt the blade.

Not a problem! For smaller parts it’s quite handy, for larger pieces it’s not as needed. So I guess it kinda depends on the cut.

Enjoyed the video but am a bit confused around how you set up the router on the rail - my limited understanding is that the only one of the rail guides runs in the track and the other is used to fine adjust the width of the rebate or rabbit?
