I swear I have pstd from drilling so many failed stem holes over the years. I make exotic style peace pipes with pencil thin stems at 10 inches usually, I drive the bit through my stem wood and leave the bit in and put it straight into my wood lathe and mill it down it's a pain in the ass because of the failures when I'm so close to finishing or the bit sealing inside of the stem and not being able to remove it but when I succeed it's so satisfying and it's sanded starting with 250 grit and ending with 1500 grit so it's glass smooth.

so how did the "Naturals" drill the holes ?
@triumphmanful8 жыл бұрын
I had to cut my pipe stems into fourths. Then drill them. Then I made matching countersunk interlocking ends. Male and female. The system works well and can be taken apart and stored in a parfletch bag.

The first pipes were usually made by splitting a piece of seasoned hardwood branch. Each side had a channel cut in it that made the tube. When the two pieces were put together, they were carved with tapers on each end. The smoking end was shaped to better fit the mouth. The other end was to fit on to the special made pipe bowl. Most of the pipe bowls, the authentic ones were made from the sacred bloodstone. Hand carved. The end opposite the smoking end was carved precisely to fit into the side tube of the bloodstone pipe bowl. Usually the pipe was taken apart and kept in a leather pouch carefully wrapped up. Both the wood and the bowl were fragile. The two halves of wood would often be glued together with egg white, or with a tree resin.then they would be wrapped with wet rawhide and when dry, they would be bound together. Red Willow bark was mostly used, as true tobacco was rare. Flutes on the other hand were made in a similar fashion, but people ask how did they put the holes in. Native American flutes are not like any in any place in the world as they have two chambers. Only the rim blown ones are straight tubes. They used some very unique methods for making the holes. Some were burned in with a charred pointed stick. some with a pointed stone tied to a stick...It was not till a European left a gun rod that they had a metal rod to use to burn holes with. I have been making branch flutes for over 10 years now. but with modern tools. The pipe the illustrator is making is just one style of pipe that was used. Toughest part was obtaining the sacred blood stone. to shape the bowl. A pipe from just hard wood would not last long. Try to remember, the pipe ceremony is not something to take lightly. it is a serious ritual just as serious as a Catholic taking communion. It was just one of the ways to mediate to connect with the Creator.

If you don't want it to wear out, make a paste of coffee powder (I use Nescafe Classic Coffee), sweetened creamer and some chocolate powder. Put some water and mix it. Make sure it's not too watery cause you want it to stick to the pot. Put it inside the pot and let it dry for 1 day. Make sure not to block the smoke exit hole. You should be able to overcome the wear and tear issue.

Bradford pear wood is also good for pipe-making. The contents of the heartwood form a heat-resistant sort of putty on the inside of the bowl after a few smokes. The grain also looks quite fetching.

and luckily there is plenty of it to go 'round
@RockinChairGoblin8 ай бұрын
Try out using wood burl in the future. The grain comes out wonderful, and it lasts far longer in terms of use. The twisted grain of a wood burl allows for the heating and cooling with a rarer chance of cracking over time.

I've had to do that for a few things, like sword handles for fun and I use my drill with a level on top, clamp the wood level, drill a bit, turn the wood half or 1/4 turn and repeat. I had about 1/16 in margin of error on 9 inches of wood so not bad at all. as long as you watch that level and keep turning the wood to limit veering too far one way.

Its actually ingenious really, they would take a termite or some wood eating grub and seal one end with the grub inside so the grub would eat through the soft wood center and make a nice long stem, though there where also stone bit drills you would use a bow drill with to get the same affect

This is my observation only, it is not meant to embarrass or criticize anyone, their person or their beliefs. First of all: there is no such thing as a "Native American Peace Pipe". The term "peace pipe" is a misrepresentation of a "sacred pipe", which is exactly that, a sacred pipe is used in traditional ceremonies or prayers. The pipe serves as the conduit (the pipe bowel holds and burns the tobbaco) between the actor and the smoke...which carries the thoughts or prayers to Spirit and completes the spiritual connection. Also a true sacred pipe is never displayed, sold, bartered, or photographed as that would neutralize the sacredness of the pipe. Again, this not meant to criticize anyone but is offered in the spirit of academia.
