I could watch videos of this type of craftsmanship all day.

Thanks man. It's been good to remember that I have the basic gear instead of getting frustrated and putting off my projects.

Just ran across your ‘intro tool’ episode. I liked the simplicity and straightforwardness.... you’ve earned my subscription and I look forward to watching your videos. Best wishes and thanks! MG

Dude! You've commented on my videos a bunch of times.. I had no idea you had a channel. I was watching hand tool stuff so i can show james up and came across yours. This channel rocks! thanks for the info

+The WoodWorking Junkie glad you liked my channel! I saw you subscribe, so thank you! A small mortise for the knuckle joint on the turning saw is going to be super easy. Trust me, I am new to this and I am chopping 3.5 inch deep x 1/2 inch wide mortises on my bench legs by hand. Here is another video on making the frame saw / turning saw / bow saw by Paul Sellers kzbin.info/www/bejne/kGWvoJugotiee80

Good advice, sir. I would add a drill of some kind, an egg beater, or brace, or a cordless, it doesn't matter too much. Add drill bits and a counter sink to that. A couple screw drivers, and screw driver bits if you get the cordless drill. A hammer for nails. And a file, and a rasp would round things out. A spoke shave would be nice, but could be added later. The first thing you want to make are some marking gauges, and some other basic tools.

Good points.

I thought about subscribing and looked at your channel. I saw that you haven't put anything up in a couple of years. Making videos is harder to do than many people think, I understand why someone would stop. I might subscribe if you think you'll be uploading more stuff soon.

It is very difficult to make good quality videos. Woodworking has taken a back-seat, unfortunately. Lots else going on in my life at this time.

I understand, sir. All the best to you.

Hi very good advice, do you think adding a good quality tape measure and steel rule are not essential for beginners? Normski
@SighthoundstudioTV7 жыл бұрын
Most people already have a tape measure and a steel rule. I wanted to cover tools specific to woodworking.

I agree I use them all the time

Thank you for this very useful video. What about the 1200 diamond stone? Does it yield an extra fine bevel? Thank you.
@SighthoundstudioTV7 жыл бұрын
Yes, the 1200 stone yields an extra fine bevel. I always hone the bevel on a strop after sharpening on the 1200 stone, and I get a wonderful finish on the wood from this process.

I'd say you can buy much cheaper combination square and tune it to perfect squarness and for money saved get a spokeshave and drill hand drill - those too are basic tools. Plus i believe flat plane soul does matter even on smaller planes, not only when you flatten the soul, you are polishing it a little, thus you will have less resistance from wood later, but also you are sure your boards are dead flat later, even minimal hollow on plane can prove gluing 2 boards together impossible because they will have 1mm hollow or camber in the middle. Oh.... and clamps, you can never have enough clamps! Other than that, really good list of tools (i prefer push saws, but that's only personal preference).

+Bartosz Pielak I tested a few squares and found some cheap squares to be quite accurate. There should be a video on it.

+Sighthound Studio nice! shoot a video for that if you have spare time. i live in Poland (not too many good hand tools here, even used ones) and i don't earn too much, i'm really trying to buy every possible tool as cheap as i can without loosing the quality. i heard Narex chisels you are recommending have really high quality steel, but i don't know if you watched Paul Sellers videos or read his blog. he is recommending extremally cheap chisels from Aldi.
@SighthoundstudioTV8 жыл бұрын
+Bartosz Pielak here is the video on woodworking squares. kzbin.info/www/bejne/m6WrnIFumrSZoJI Yes, Paul Sellers recommends Aldi these days. I bought my Narex set a few years ago before I knew about Aldi.

You can also buy a cheap square grab sand paper and a card scraper to refine the bins inside the combination square to make sure it's square

I would suggest that a set of diamond stones is perhaps too much for a beginner. I got about £5 worth of wet and dry sandpaper for my carving gear. Nice video though
@SighthoundstudioTV8 жыл бұрын
+Andrew Frudd I agree... Those diamond stones are expensive. Wet and dry sand paper on a sheet of glass works for beginners.

You can get a desant combination square for about £30.00
@mikecagle9844 жыл бұрын
Really? A hundred dollars for a square! I have several that I paid at least 80% less for that have been outstanding and "square" without going through that kind of money!

I find this wood working book “pepe amazing plan” (Google it) ideal for me. Not just does it cover wood working techniques, but it even explains the development cycles of trees which lead to the characteristics that craftsmen find favorable in lumber. I actually had to get a second copy for my father.
