Steve, They are absolutely beautiful samples 😊 I'm interested in the white rack on the right. It looks like a CD holder. What is the function of it? if you don't mind me asking 😊 I experimented with roasting Spruce this year for instrument tops and the difference in tone is great 😊 ॐ One more thing. I have a ton of reclaimed wood, all softwood that had been shelves in a factory for over 40 years. Some of it is far too big to store inside until I have the time to process it and the guys helping me to transport it thought it would be bad to leave some of it out in the rain during the winter, but in fact, I've never found it be an issue with well seasoned wood. I would love to hear your experience on this. By the way, if I lived local to you, I would definitely pay you regular visits for wood and to pick your brains. Please keep up these informative videos my friend. Blessings 😊 ॐ

The Wood Yogi Hi Chris! Thanks for the kind words. The white racks are a bit of an experiment. I was brainstorming ways to organize the Ziricote fretboards we made so we can access them quickly while not taking up much space. I bought two 4’ long wire closet racks. Installed one 3 off the wall and the other about 12” in front of it to make a floating vertical rack. The fretboards easily slide in and out and I can log their locations. It needs some refining but the concept is sound (and the price is right!) I’m a little embarrassed to say that I’m not sure on the reclaimed question. We are located in Southern California so we don’t have harsh winter conditions to deal with. My gut feeling says it’s probably OK but I’d feel bad if I was incorrect and you lost esome reclaim

That's just darn pretty right there. Volume was doing some odd things though?
@CommercialForest5 жыл бұрын
Fixit Fingers Thanks! I’m about ready to try a new video editor. I’ve been using Splice on my iPhone. It was pretty simple to use, not too many bells and whistles, which is perfect for me. Then they did an update which wiped out one of my videos completely. The new version has more features but is glitchy with audio issues. Oh well 😔.

What do you think one of those pieces would look like if cut and glued up into a cube ? Which I would then carve into a bowl. I have a client looking for a 6x6x6 inch bowl; she would really like the dark, figured maple with all that chatoyance. -Mike p.s. Steve, I love your videos, but dude, lately, the volume has been, ahem, erratic.

MPart I hear you. 😆 I am on a plan to post regular content for a little over a month to see what the effect is on my KZbin SERP results. Don’t know if I can really keep up this pace. Also, my feelings are not going to be hurt if people don’t comment on every video - I know it’s a lot! However, it will be worth it yes just gets me to the next level, if you know what I mean. I think it turned piece would look awesome. I can tell you when you carve into this rest of material the color stays consistent. It’s the same color on the interior as the exterior. If you want to collaborate, I will pack you up a you US PS flat rate box with 1 1/16 x 4”x 6” Maple blanks. let me know, just give me a shout out in your video, assuming you’re making one. 👍

@@mpart_woodlathe-stuff Yikes! I do (Pittsburgh, correct?) and just realized that I still have your Korina blank from November in the "Wood Lair," as well. I'll send them both your way. Are you looking for variation on the maple bowl (different figures in each board)?
@mpart_woodlathe-stuff5 жыл бұрын
@@CommercialForest Yep, I'm the Pittsburgh guy 😁 Variations? I don't think it will matter. I was thinking of strip(?) cutting while you we showing your maple blanks. BTW, the 'burn' through and through the roasted maple is what confirmed that it would make a nice turning. And who can deny the figuring is a bad thing ? -Mike
@mpart_woodlathe-stuff5 жыл бұрын
Steve, Rectangles are not ideal turning blanks, squares are. If I have 1x4x6 I would need 6 pieces of 1 inch this to get a 6 x 6 x 4 inch bowl. Square is everything (not as in 90 degrees) for turning. Does that make sense ? 4 pieces would yield a 4x4 inch bowl but waste 2" from each blank.

Is the curly maple hard Sugar Maple?

Tonefiend hi 👋🏻 Hi Ian - the curly is red leaf 🍁.
@Tonefiend5 жыл бұрын
Commercial Forest Nice, I thought so. The weight is considerably less than sugar maple. Now I have another question. Does the roasting lighten the weight of the wood up even more?
@CommercialForest5 жыл бұрын
Tonefiend it does a little but i think it’s mostly limited to the water weight loss.

What is roasted maple?
@CommercialForest5 жыл бұрын
Bryan's Loess Hills Homestead It’s basically Maplewood that has gone through a second kiln drying process with the temperature cranked up really high. Back in the day, the Vikings used to just light their wood on fire and burned wood had moisture resistant properties… Same concept, just under much more controlled circumstances 😆
