The first half of the kzbin.infoUgkx3ICSK6nSknaL_45CU2NmFSoXjarGMDiJ book is everything about wood: types, tools, finishes, setting up shop etc. The second half is all about doing projects for inside and outside of the home. The color pictures are helpful. After reading a dozen of these types of books, this is probably the best overall (layout, color photos, plans). Only detraction is that many of the projects use a table saw/router/planer, which are usually expensive and take up space, so the plans are less friendly to newcomers and the budget conscious. But I know I can use a drill, circular saw or a jigsaw to make the projects.

This bench defies gravity in more ways than one. Didn't get the logic of such a distant backrest. Unless there's supposed to be a cushion. And the beam joining the feet at the bottom is rather badly eaten up. Honestly if two people sat in this it is very likely to tip over. That is why a lot of benches do not have backrests, so that the weight remains perpendicular, or the legs are much much wider so that backrest has perpendicular support as well. Anyway good filming. Tks,

Nice job, however safety first. Those railroad ties are soaked in creosote because they are intended for ground contact. Creosote is very toxic, not to be handled with the bare hands, and not to mention breathing, the dust of cut railroad tie soaked in creosote. spend a little money on some good wood or find a tree that has fallen down in someone’s yard. I’m sure they would donate it to you.

Nice idea. I once used train sleepers too in my garden. But then I realized that old train sleepers are painted and soaked in a very dangerous poisen called Creosot, which can give you different kind of allergy and is surposed to be develloping cancer, if too much contact. And over the years it will pollute the soil around it. I my country it is no longe legal to use old train sleepers in public areas. You can use it for private constructions, but it is still dangerous and it does pollute.

This is a beautiful build, but when you weigh in the chance of hitting a nail or spike, combined with the creosote and repeated application of toxic weed killers sprayed on RR ties each and every year by railway maintenance crews, you might want to pass. This certainly does not detract from a beautiful project.

I inherited a 1/2 lot in a rural area that was sought after by investors. They were putting up mansions. So I quickly saw the handwriting on the wall and went to the city planner to ask him how many sheds could I have in my back yard. And he looked at my plot and said, "what are the sizes and I said 12 X 24ft. And he said, "with the new rich mans agreement which wasn't yet law, none. But since I"m the law now and do not like these developers, I'll bypass that agreement that was never turned into law and grant you a permit to build however many you want. Being a cool guy that he was, I said, "will you be the inspector of these sheds and he said, "yep". He added, "if you want to put utilities to them just do it to code and you could call them AirB&B's. And I said, "what about putting up an automatic gate in the back, in the alley to get to these AirB&B's he said, "what, you want to secure your property?" And we both laughed. He said just don't stack them. So with having access to as many "free" pallets that I wanted, I stacked them in my backyard making sure to cover them so nobody knew I had them. It took me 4 months to do this. Then I hollowed out my garage and got some used wood working tools such as a big combo jointer and planer in one. You just had to remember to lower the jointer setting so it will act as a planer. I had a full time job and my then wife and I would begin to make the lumber. My ex had a job too but investors tore down her place of business so I employed her full time and trained her to shape the wood. She was a beautiful beast and would knock out cabins worth of wood a day with the paid help of two neighborhood boys that were breaking down the pallets. We had an expensive metal detector but with so much wood anyone was bound to miss a few nails. So I would have to replace some bits, and they were not cheap. In a month my ex had all the wood ready to go. Then we started to use two pallets to make the wall sections, which I think were stronger than conventional 2X4 and plywood walls. Took a year to get all the walls, roofing wood that were made by finger jointing 1x6" together and glue them to reach the span of the roof line. Then we doubled up on them to make then like a 2X6. And by forming them to an A-pex roof, we passed code. Before all the foundations were in, which consisting of repurposed asphalt and used PVC for coded drainage. We were flat broke. So I sold my speed boat to pay for a few framers to help me get these cabins up. They were very impressed with the fact that I got the wood accepted my the city inspector. Since the wood was already assembled, it was like putting together legos. All 8 of the sheds were up by the weeks end, including the flooring in two of them. By the weeks end, I had all the drywall up but not mudded or taped. So I hired a guy who came with his son and they worked very fast and mudded 6 of them. Then they came back a few days later and mud and taped the last two and would have to come back to apply the smooth coat, which they did with a spray. The following day, they sanded it and used the darkness and lighting to find any flaws. Then I had him paint the cabins as well. Why not, I gave him the keys to my 8 year old F-250 with medium miles for everything they did. However, dad left me his truck, which wasn't used for 4 years. I had it towed to the shop and they flushed the tank and the carbs, added fuel and it fired right up. And to pay them, I had to take out a loan. By the days end, my ex would have the first cabin ready to rent. So we through a party on the bank's money and invited a lot of people, including the first renters who just flew in from New York and were hungry and tired. So they ate and retired. 30 years ago, before internet, the units were going for $200 for the first night $135 was a deposit that they would get back if all was ok. $65 a night for the rest of their stay. Granted $65 a night doesn't sound like much, but the units were done with quality in mind and they were bigger than any room at the Holiday Inn. Plus you could drive right up to your cabin provided you had stock exhaust. For those that didn't, there was a parking area for them, and I was a stickler for that. Plus I had family in the force that would simply love to regulate assholes. Hence, when the word got out that people were leaving 5 stare reviews the place was pact. Now that the units were built, I got rid of a lot of stuff that was in the garage that although I didn't want to get rid of, but the space was needed more. So I set up tables in the garage that served wrapped pastries and beverages on ice. We got cereal dispensers, a big coffee table with packets galore, that the neighbor girl monitored. People would steal all sorts of stuff if they could. Now because they were AirB&B's, we got more per month. After you X's that 8 we were pulling in a lot more than my ex made in a year. So to manage this, it became her part-time job. She had help from others. She help to up grade our home and she planted veggie gardens all over. We never wanted for grocieries other than meat. We had chickens where the renters would get to enjoy farm fresh eggs.

My good friend i have 2 very important informations to tell you about that wood with all my good heart without being rude to you. First the liquid they use to those woods its bad for your health to breath when you cut the wood. Second when a wood like that have termites on it never ever put it in your workshop because they will seek a new house and termites love soft wood so they will surely go to the nice pine woods furniture your making. (I work as pest exterminator) Keep the good work

It could be good idea, or could be not. It depends on antiseptic which was used in thees sleeper, could it be it was creosote or used oil? They are very dangerous...

This was a really great video...until...dude uses an old contaminated railrod tie and breathes the toxic sawdust. Dude deosn't use gloves when touching the wood. Dude uses unsafe saw blades and sawing techniques. Dude makes a backrest that structurally sucks. Dude adds more toxicity to the bench with the varshish and makes it even more flamable...don't smoke near this thing. I give a solid "D minus for this effort. It would of been safer for him to eat raw chicken.

Reuse of railway sleepers poses health risks to the woodworker especially due to the sleepers having been impregnated with toxic creosote.

Interesting, however, if they were railroad ties in the US, they would be soaked in creosote. Im going to assume these sleepers are not treated.

What do you think with what kind of pesticides these sleepers were treated ? In the old days there were the basic chemicals used , as they were sprayed in Vietnam, agent orange, be careful if you touch it or inhale dust from it .

This guy either hates his machines blades, or is using someone else’s stuff! I worked on the railroad for 41 years, and know these ties are full of rocks both small and large, along with nails, screws, spikes, and some even have corrugated metal plates pushed in the ends to keep them from splitting. It’s like using pallet wood X 10! I tried the pallet wood crap for awhile, but quickly learned that any money I was saving on wood was offset many times over by what I was spending sharpening and replacing damaged saw, jointer & planer blades! Pretty neat project, this! Just not my cup of tea!
