An enlightening tutorial. Have four 1910 doors with yale lock holes and one with what looks like the effects of the Hulk’s fist that goes all the way through. This technique is perfect.

Loved this short-short video! The end result looks perfect. I have a couple repairs that would be best if they were made with dutchmen. Do you prefer a certain type of wood for this repair?

Thanks Rick for covering this. AFAIK the topic of a Dutchman has not been addressed on YT. I'd like to see more content like this - fixing/updating vintage houses. Nice job btw.

Really good timing. I have at least 5 doors in my house that i wanted to patch and replace the old mortise locks on. Seems pretty easy with the router template method.

The front door in my new-to-me late-70s home has a commercial lockset that sits far from the jam. Not only does it not work properly, but it is unattractive, so I'd like to replace it. I was looking for a way to fill both the holes for the knob and deadbolt set and the door is solid wood. Would I cut through the whole door to install the dutchman?
@maggiehenson30082 жыл бұрын
A little late to this thread, but what if you don’t want to paint the door? I have a 1917 Sears & Roebuck craftsman, and somehow the doors have not yet been painted, but I do need to replace the mortise lock on the front door.
@WoodWorkLIFE2 жыл бұрын
You will need to be a little bit more creative with cutting your Dutchman to make it a more organic shape. You will need to find a matching piece of wood to replace it with. It will be an artful solution and will require some shopping to find the right wood and grain pattern to cut the Dutchmen from. You will then need to match the stain on the door. It will take come significant skill and attention to detail but it is possible.

Thanks for this video. Repurposing an old door myself and the old lockset looks like your door - large square hollow. So, my question is did you leave the large hollow area under your Dutchman or fill that later? Since newer locks use just a 1" or so barrel lock, seems you'd have to patch up most of the remaining hollow area. Did you turn the door over and repeat the Dutchman from the other side??? Confused.
@WoodWorkLIFE5 жыл бұрын
I don't fully understand the question...
@chdinct67925 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the confusion. Let me try this way. At 2:38 you can see your sanded, patched door but it still has a large rectangular void in the side of the door where the old style square lock mortise was. How did you patch that up so you can install a modern door knob set? Or did you re-use the old lock set? Thanks. Also, I have the same cordless trim router - love it. Already routed out for my Dutchman but haven't fit it up yet.
@WoodWorkLIFE5 жыл бұрын
@@chdinct6792 ahh, depends on the thickness of the door. I was fitting antique hardware so I didn't fit for it. I just bought a reclaimed door and reclaimed hardware. If you are fitting a whole different lockset it might make sense to patch the entire section of the door (just cut the chunk out and replace with fresh timber)
@ivokolarik82906 жыл бұрын
You could also use mini router sled to bring the patch to the same thickness as the door
@WoodWorkLIFE6 жыл бұрын
You could, but with so little material to remove it was a synch with a plane
@ivokolarik82906 жыл бұрын
You know how to use hand plane I know how to use hand plane but most job site and diy don't know how to use a hand plane
@WoodWorkLIFE6 жыл бұрын
Really? A block plane should be one of the first tools anyone who works with wood should buy.
@ivokolarik82906 жыл бұрын
I know a lot of jobsite carpenters but far as I know only two can use block plane
@richardtrowell88127 ай бұрын
I use a belt sander starting with 80 grit instead of electric planer. Then go finer to finish. I seem to have better results. Hand planer seems to take material off unevenly for me as well. Definitely requires practice and skills. Could you do some door jam repair videos. How to remove a piece and replace?
