Did anyone else click on this video to view the similarities between Woody Hayes and Chris Farley’s motivational speaker SNL character, Matt Foley? I heard Ed O’Neal mention in an interview with Rich Eisen, that Chris told him Woody Hayes was a big influence on his Matt Foley character.

I started my graduate study at OSU in 1978, the last year of Woody. I admire him and he is my hero. I love his dedication, devotion, passion and integrity. I applied his philosophy and work ethic in my career and built made some contributions in my life so far. America needs more people like Woody. His spirit will never die. Go Bucks!

@@1Barsamian I respect your opinion. Woody, like most people has many facets. He was an old school guy. He was a kind man in many ways. He visited Children’s Hospital all the time. He helped many of his players with his own bucks. He was so dedicated to his team that he did not spend enough time with his wife and son. He was controversial primarily because of his rages and his lack of control of that sudden rage. He admired General Patton. In that regard, he was very much like Patton. His commitment to his job and relentless pursuit of excellence reminded people how he was just like General Patton in football. There is a good Woody and a bad Woody. More often than not, he had been a very good Woody. I had a bad temper too when I was young. I have changed over the years. I understand certain things about people with bad temper because of my own situation. I knew a Clemson player who was on that team and he was Charlie Bowman’s roommate and teammate. He told me that Woody called Charlie the very next day and apologized to Charlie sincerely for what he did the previous night on the field. Charlie told Woody: Coach, thanks for your apology. I understand that you never meant to hurt me. No worries. No hard feelings.

My uncle played for him in the early 50s. Woody did punch him once, but he also became an all American playing for him. He was named Steve Ruzic. He then played for the Packers.

My Dad was from Lancaster, Ohio! He was 80 years old when he passed! Miss him now, and always! He played football at Lancaster high school, where Rex Kern played, and went on to quarterback the Super Sophomores, in 1968, winning the National Championship by beating OJ Simpson, and USC in the Rose Bowl! His dad was a barber, and cut my dad’s hair as a young man! Also Bobby Carpenter played there, as well as many other greats that went on to play for The Ohio State! 🌰🏈

Woody's tirades were always right after one of his own players made a huge mistake. He was throwing up a smokescreen so the TV and newspapers would focus on Woody. And the players could mentally recover without having to read about or see himself on the news.

I love the look of the Horseshoe in those days. The field was the height it was supposed to be with the A-deck stands at the same level, instead of the field sunken down low and stands towering above it like a pro stadium as it has been since 2001.

He was both feared and admired throughout his tenure. I remember his last game when he over reacted and punched an opposing player. Coach Hayes was a legend and probably still is around Ohio.

Gator bowl, Clemson, Charlie Bauman I believe. Celebrating in front of the Buckeye bench. Not a very bright move, but never less, ended Woody Hayes coaching Ohio State Woody Hayes in 79, had he coached, probably beats USC in that Rose Bowl. Could Charles White have run over an OSU defense today? And you knew he was getting that football every play. Frustrating for Buckeye fans to know what was coming, and powerless to stop it. USC wins by a single point. The front line of USC was the best in the nation. OSU and its defense had their hands full. Hayes probably had the smarts to adjust to the running game of the Trojans. Bruce had no idea what he was facing. And McKay made it look so damn easy.

He doesn’t get enough credit for being a great human being. I’m an Alabama fan and we all love Bear Bryant and I believe Woody was just as good of a Coach and in ways maybe better he seems like the kinda man I would be feel good about letting my son go play for and learn from.

You are telling the truth. Woody spent a lot of time visiting the hospital, and not just his players. He would find out from the staff which patients were discouraged or not getting visitors or seriously ill and visit them, and he tried to keep this out of the press.

Bob was on the Ohio State Basketball team while Woody was the Football Coach. The story is that Bob would go watch Football Practice and in part modeled himself after Woody.

What OSU football was in 1978. Michigan football today is "sign stealer guy", computer crimes, 60 spies sent out to spy on future opponents, coaches on the sidelines of other teams wearing their gear, allegations on sports betting, slush fund to finance their "I spy" operation, "UNCLE T"(we'll find out more about him later), A head coach suspended twice,,,in the same season, NCAA going to drop an atomic bomb on the school and the football program. There is no NCAA rule against sign stealing. In 1994 the NCAA implemented a rule against in-person scouting and scouting by electronic means. Why? Because smaller schools COULDN'T AFFORD IT. PERIOD. 1959: Woody threw a punch at a reporter and punched the wrong guy 1973: Woody shoved a camera man 1971: Woody tore up the sideline markers in protest of a bad call in Ann Arbor 1977: Woody shoved a camera man 1978: Woody fired after punching a Clemson player in the throat. 1998: Youngstown State coach Jim Tressel implicated in a scandal when his quarterback admitted to taking huge amounts of money from a drug store founder and - big surprise - former member of the Youngstown State board of trustees. The quarterback then admitted to TAMPERING WITH A JUROR in that same drug store founder's FRAUD TRIAL. Tressel conspired with the drug store founder to get the quarterback a job back in 1988 before the kid came to Youngstown. 2011: Tressel suspended after it came to light that a bunch of his players had an agreement with the owner of a tattoo parlor for free tattoos in exchange for memorabilia who was under FBI investigation for DRUG TRAFFICKING. Tressel was aware of it as early as 2010 but didn't notify the compliance officer of Ohio State claiming, as a FORMER ATHLETIC DIRECTOR at Youngstown State that he "didn't know who to contact". Also in 2011: Tressel resigns after it comes to light that he had known about the scandal as early as 2002. 2010-ish: Through the years it comes to light that more than 30 of Florida coach Urban Meyer's players had been arrested for offenses ranging from possession of alcohol (who cares?) to aggravated stalking and domestic violence BY STRANGULATION. Ohio State athletic director in 2011 after Tressel's resignation: "Urban Meyer is our guy!" Spare me the righteous indignation directed toward a program that, it appears, violated the rule prohibiting THE MANNER IN WHICH they "stole signs" - which isn't against the rules in the first place.
