Yes, perfect feel and note selection.

The incomparable Billy Hunt on the trumpet solo, channeling absolute magic! Woody sounded fabulous on the Alto Jazz-Melody lead too. And then Bill Chase, leading the Herd on the shout chorus!

Trumpet solo by Billy Hunt--under appreciated player who just couldn't seem to crack into that elite level. Still alive and still playing last time I heard.

Trumpet player is my cousin Bill Hunt and though that gorgeous head of hair is gone, he can still play that horn!

So is mine.I still play trumpet after two open heart surgeries and a TIA just so I can show I can still do it.I'm 66 now so why quit?

What a sound this band had. They could play anything and make it sounds damn good. Billy Hunt on trumpet is exceptional at his instrument.

I have the DVD. Excellent. Beautiful trumpet solo.
WOW !!! still sounds great after all these years, I have this record and 40+ others. Woody was my HERO when I was in my 20s, and this is one of my favourite tracks, also one of my dads favs, we saw this band live at the NEW VICTORIA THEATRE, London in 1964, its my favourite line up.

The trumpet soloist is Billy Hunt, not Bill Chase. I have a MOSAIC boxed set of about 6 albums of this era on 3 CDs. What an awesome band!!

One of the beautiful trumpet solos, to me. So emotional. Probably because it takes me back to my first year in Jazz Band. And a great trumpet player in our band; Johnny Serrano (R.I.P.)

Woody's solo reminds me of Johnny Hodges.

Woody was always a Hodges disciple

Yup. I used to play like Johnny Hodges in jazz band. My teacher loved my sound. Until i took the Eric Dolphy route. And never turned back. Much to the chagrin of my band teacher.

An observation... I can hardly see any of the players looking at the chart... they all have their individual parts memorized...
@edpolk12623 жыл бұрын
This happens even with junior high and high school kids. You play arrangenents so many times, the fingering becomes automatic. By my senior year in high school, I had memorized all the arrangements in band, jazz band and orchestra. So had a few dozen other students.

Baritone saxophonist is the late Nick Brignola. Tenor saxophonist on far right is the late Sal Nistico.
@rudolphguarnacci1973 жыл бұрын
No, definitely not Sal. I think it's Carmen Leggio.

thanks, James. when Bill Chase blew, his neck doubled in size...amazing to watch, as well as hear
@jas026able7 жыл бұрын
my pleasure, alibee. Bill Chase moved into rock (for a time) but returned to jazz. Jake Hanna hated rock and returned to swing with the Concord All-Stars and later with Howard Alden in those gigs with George Van Eps. The Swinging Herd (1962-65) was an amazing jazz group; some say the finest (impeccable solos and fidelity to ensemble playing). Thankfully we have these KZbin cuts. Never had the pleasure of seeing Bill Chase.
@alibee10157 жыл бұрын
Saw the Herd in Oakland twice! sometime in the 60's ~ with both Chase and Jake Hanna. And Woody of course. What a band!!!!! :)
@jas026able7 жыл бұрын
Lucky you, I never had that privilege. I was around but busy spending my allowance on Sinatra, Vaughan, Prysock LP's at Music in the Round, my substitute for concerts. Jake Hanna is the quintessence of all that is good in big band drumming. And of course, he grew up in Boston, lol.

One of the few times I've seen Bil with a Dizzy horn. Always knew that he had played one for a spell. However Kenton didn't like it when Bill was on his band.
