Barn Arts Theater, NJ, 1964. As a young trumpet player, sitting in the loft overlooking the band and trumpet section, this left a lasting impression. Bill Chase never opened his book once. One of the most dynamic events of my musical life.

Some people are like that. I discovered that life is easier and more pleasant for people who are kind and gracious. I was put off by a trombone player back in the forties. He was a big kid and I was a little kid. Strange, how some unpleasant things in childhood seem to stick with us.

Woody Herman band played our HS back in the 70's. Didn't have Sal but they were awesome. I remember the drummer put a stick through a drum head during a chart. Woody kept the beat with a stick on the side of a drum while the drummer replaced the head...all while the band played on. The guys were pros.

Horace Silver song. 1959 - but who the lyrics? anyone ? and who exactly was Sadie? (Nina Simone mentions her in Mississippi Goddam, "everybody knows about Sister Sadie" Sister Sadie was a mean chic, always thought that she was real slick, Then she ran into Alfonso Brown, and hasn't been the same since Alfonso put her down. Sister Sadie never worry, Sister Sadie never hurry, Then she ran into Alfonso Brown, and hasn't been the same since Alfonso put her down. She just paces 'round the floor, she don't have no mind no more, She just stares off into space, with a frown on her face. Sister Sadie was a honey, always had a lot of money, Then she ran into Alfonso Brown, and hasn't been the same since Alfonso put her down.

I used to go to Disneyland on Big Band Night and this is exactly the huge driving sound that Woody Herman's band blew my mind with on every performance. The band would be on fire and the tenor sax would get up and out blow them all. I don't think that this can be done anymore.

Practice of course. But also, players back then did not approach jazz like weight lifting. If I had to guess, I'd bet that mouthpiece had a tip opening of no more than maybe 85 mils. Both Coltrane and Dexter played a mpc with an 85 tip. The reed was probably not a Popsicle stick either.
