As a pilot, we do and watch crash analysis to learn as much as we can. Perhaps we don’t make the same mistakes. Woody’s humiliation is obvious. He teared up. Yet he understood by going through it he was teaching us something. And that is more important than his ego. You guys are tops in my book. BTW Woody also teared up talking about the honor of Gus choosing him to mentor him through instructor. How can one not love you guys.

Why when someone says they don't want to do something, do a bunch of people completely ignore what is said and try pressuring that person into doing it? Why assume you know what's better for them than they do? Did you not watch the video? When a person states their limits, don't try to push them into it. Peer pressure has and does kill people...there's nothing good about it or the people who use it. Always tell them where they can shove it and be ready to dealt with their defensive reaction with a bit of hard truth, RIGHT IN THEIR FACES.

Thank you for sharing. I have met instructors whose only concern would have been winning the debrief: Why didn't you stay with us? There was no danger! You caused the problem!" But that solves nothing; the instructor may even convince himself he's God and a perfectly good student may even give up the sport. A few good ' I learned about diving from that' stories, honestly told, are worth their weight in gold.

Thanks Woody, you reinforced the level of commitment to the the underwater sport community that you posses, the understanding that we can learn from mistakes and become better people, instructors and safety ambassadors. This video flys in the face of a previous comment when I thought you were too mean verbally responding to an instructor doing (CF1?) and not the ambassador that brings positive awareness to the sport while constantly impressing upon the audience how important safety is combined with a constant level of humility and respect for one’s own limitations and diving in and of itself. Thanks and regardless of this video and admission; which should only further demonstrate the fantastic ambassador and teacher you and Gus are, I think you and Gus represent the best of the dive community that participates on KZbin and KZbinr’s of all types no matter the sport or lessons or messages they promote.

As a brand new Adventure diver with only 79 total dives under my belt, I have met a large variety of Dive Masters. The one that sticks out the most was, of course, a completely ego driven nasty one that I only wish he could let go of the chip on his shoulder long enough to watch and learn from Master Class divers like Woody! At dive number 51 he was sooo nasty to me that I thought I may have given up on this sport completely. Luckily I had the opportunity to dive the very next day with a Master Class Diver! Someone who is humble, honest and can learn from their mistakes.. Those are very admirable traits in not only a dive master, but in a human being!! RESPECT!!!

You guys have absolutely, 100% inspired me (and my wife, by default) to start gearing towards diving. Snorkeling in the Cheat River is a small step compared to what you guys do, but it’s something, and I’m one to commit. I just want to do it safely and correctly. West Virginia isn’t exactly Mecca for underwater activity, but we’ve been meaning to use our passports a bit more. We each run separate businesses, and are hellbent on finding ways to stay sane. I may never go into a cave, but I certainly want some of the enthusiasm you fellas display on here. "On duty" was the best way to say it Woody. You are lifeguards for them. You are not there for fun but you can still enjoy it.

I spent ten years teaching rooky truckers the finer points of driving through the mountains. Toe heal, double clutching and staying calm. I put a lot of effort into developing a specific vocabulary tuned to talking to nervous people who were right on the edge of their capabilities. I have nothing but respect for you guys and what you do.

Congratulation Woody for your courage to confess this and for your humanly way of reliving it (one could feel beyond words)! It's what makes you a great person (and surely a great instructor)! Thank you to both of you for this lesson! In my view, it should make your channel more appreciated too (not less)! Great job! Thank you.

Hey guys! I'm no diver, but you guys are so facinating to listen to. It's been wild digging through your catalog since I subscribed. I do a lot of boating on lakes and I can swim but honestly I'm terrified of the water. Watching your talks opened me up to learning how to dive (simple stuff! I'm listening), I want to start out simple and hookah snorkel and learn some basics. Keep up the great stuff.

Thanks for sharing Mr. Woody. It takes a lot to admit a mistake, take responsibility, On The Internet!!, for all to hear and critique. I applaud you for opening yourself up, but also for using this as a learning experience for the benefit of all of us. I hope when I learn to dive I have an instructor as humble as you.

Another amazing video from Dive Talk. Thank you for sharing this so candidly Woody. There are many valuable lessons to be learned here, for divers and non divers alike. Really appreciate the honesty :) an interesting paradox where admitting mistakes actually makes you more trustworthy lol.

Hace una semana que estoy viendo video tras video. Estaba justamente buscando este. Gus, Woody, los amo. Gracias por el aprendizaje y por la sinceridad. Hace 20 años hice mi certificación y no volví a bucear. Me están motivando a volver a certificarme. Es por lejos, el mejor canal que encontré en años. GRACIAS

Mad props Woody. The hardest thing in the world is to admit, "I screwed up". But to admit it and have forever on the internet, to serve as example of, "hey don't do this, it is not smart and could get someone hurt." That takes HUGE steel ones. And to also see that reliving it still makes you uncomfortable speaks volumes. I would bring my daughter to you and ask you to instruct my daughter. Well done Woody.

The amount of knowledge you guys have and continue to gain and share is amazing. From someone who doesn’t dive and is terrified of it, but would also love to learn someday, these videos help ease my fears. Thanks guys. Amazing videos!

Woody. Appreciate the honesty and humility so much. You have the most contagious attitude, you genuinely care about others, you think hard about your mistakes and you are quick to check your ego. I’ve been more conscious of my ego and mistakes since watching your channel- So for every moment that you own up to your actions, (ill speak for myself, even though i’m likely just one of many) I take that to heart, I’m not a diver, but in my every day life I strive for humility and honor. You’re a great dude and im so glad no one was hurt- and that you did the right thing when the time came. Appreciate ya

Love you guys! You two are the reason I’m even attempting to get certified. My brother is slightly experienced but will be learning with me! Never thought I’d ever join him, was way too terrified and always assumed it was dangerous and risky. You guys really changed my mind. Thanks for everything. ❤️❤️❤️

So grateful for the lessons your channel taught me. Realizing that diving isn’t dangerous if you take precautions, have training, and the correct equipment and so on. I never realized most (not all) diving and/or cave diving accident were all similar, the caves aren’t dangerous, only people who don’t prepare.

Woody, Gus love you guys always wanted to go diving and become a diver sadly I've never had the chance to go diving or the money too but since I've discovered your channel and started watching your videos I've added it back to my list of things too do in the next 5 years and it's sitting in the number 1 spot so I wanted to thank you for how honest you both are and for how much love you both have and show for diving so thank you both.

Incredible story! Thank you for sharing . As someone who thought their diving days were over due to knee surgery it gives me hope that I can actually dive again. Annnd also taught me to me to be honest with my DM that I may need an easier type of dive. Instead of trying to prove that I am fine.
