Woody Wonderful and Weird!
The Lineated Woodpecker in Yasuni and Tambopata. AKA Gekare in Wao, Lunziri in Kichwa, Pájaro carpintero in Spanish, and Dryocopus lineatus in Latin.
Woodpeckers have strong dense neck muscles with extra muscles in their skull to protect their brains when they drum for communication, or peck for food and nesting spaces. Each time they nest they like a new place, so many other creatures benefit from their homebuilding. Another fun fact is that in order to reach deep into crevices in search of grubs, ants and sap, a woodpecker’s tongue can be up to a third of its total body length-so long that when it’s retracted, it coils around the back of the bird’s skull! Extra cushioning?
Wonder is a regular state for me in the Amazon but when I saw my first woodpecker I was entranced - Walter Lantz and Ben Hardaway hadn't strayed far from the original when they created the Woody Woodpecker character for Universal Studios in 1940. As a little girl, saturday mornings watching cartoons was joyous - to now realise their vivid colours and quirky reality was a direct download from the real rainforest lights me up.
The soundtrack here is a borrow from the original cartoon, plus the real sound of Woody, and a super processed version of the real sound that I call my Woody Snare.
Footage is from my Canon HS50SX, which is amazing for the freedom it gives me. But, on my wishlist is, 'please invent this same simplicity with a Red capacity.'
On that note...
We MUST protect this place!
Humans are geared to be the adaptive inventors, keep upgrading for joy - which, in the awareness of oneness, means for all!
