The M1 just sound classy and timeless! It sounds fresh today whereas other similar synths, even the Triton a whole decade later, are sounding mostly dated or even downright cringy. Even today, knowing that workstations are mostly a thing of the past, the Korg M1 rises in popularity again! It's a damn masterpiece.

“In France we can find the M1 for around 180€” that comment aged poorly. Although to be fair, Korg released the M1 VST a few years ago. EDIT: AND the 3DS app M01D (which itself is an upgraded version of the Japan-only DS software Korg M01) followed by the iOS app Korg i01 which is basically an even more powerful M1 that also includes EVERY song its upgraded version, the T1, in one app, and I'm not even counting the purchasable presets! You can also use the i01 with Korg's own VST Korg Gadget (under the name Darwin) if you own both.

My M1R with 4 MB ram was a bit more than those, but it came with a stack of cards. I love it to death. My dad had a M1 back in the day and I love its weird engine. If you get deep into the menus you can follow the attack sample with any analog subtractive waveform you desire...mostly. This keyboard was also used a LOT in TV production. Just watch 90s TV and you will hear the M1 all the time.

for when you get one of these, the legendary organ preset is "Organ 2". The piano used in RIAD is actually called Magic Piano. Piano 16' (bank 1, preset 1) is the house piano. load up, and tweak until it sounds just like the song. those two are EVERYWHERE. tunr off the effects to start if you have the VST, then add to taste.

I had a M1 EX (modified after purchase) for 5 or 6 years (before the keyboard died). It was a fantastic machine with multiple layers, sequencer and great sounds. It was perfect to create "song" like the one you were playing in the video. But I still have some difficulties to see the M1 as a "real" synthesizer. It was more a "rompler" with very good sound selection, a kind of super Sound Canvas. Creating new sound were merely impossible, it was possible but you were finally always coming back to some existing presets (more or less the same). I love it, piano sounds were really great, all sounds were well balanced with the others, nothing bad to say. But coming from modular world I was always feeling frustration with the M1 when it comes to create "your" sounds. Apart a few emblematic sounds, all the others (and those you created) were sounding the same. I know some people will think I'm false, and it's ok, each one has his own perception, they will say the M1 was a real synth. Then I'll say Ok, let's play : let me hear your incredible sounds that I have never heard. I will be honest, if you win the game I'll say it. So, the M1 was a very good rompler with beautiful sounds, but even in buying all cards, you were finally ending with the same set of sounds. The VST version has not the warmth of the real M1, but for those emblematic sounds it is a good solution (with all cards for the same price ! so you can see all sounds are the same :-( ).

Very good, although just spotted one minor discrepancy - the higher register chords at 03:57 for 'Gypsy Woman' aren't quite right. There are 2 chords being played in that upper octave in the original song - E minor 7 played twice, moving to Eb major 7 played 3 times. Only 1 chord is being played in the upper octave here and it looks like some kind of second inversion of Bb major 7, which isn't the right chord. Good video though, brings back memories of all the songs I used to love playing. Madonna's Vogue is another classic example of the M1 piano sound, the riff in that is pretty tricky to work out!

Also on Black Box you start with two Am Chords, but isn't the first chord a 4 note Am (A, C, E, A) followed by the normal 3 note Am chord? Is there a name for these chords when you are playing a triad with an added extra note an octave above root? Surely it should be called an 8th chord, but you only hear of 6th, 7th, 9th, 11th etc...

My first keyboard EVER! I wrote a ton of songs and saved them to Roland Quick Disks using a Yamaha MIDI Data Filer. I don't know where I can get a machine to read those anymore. But I'm sure the MIDI data for the songs is just terrible now. ;-) But your system recorded the M1 in a truly rich way. I'll have to explore it again. The best part about the M1 is that with that one keyboard my band in 1992 won some kind of contest and got sent to compete in central Canada and then Tokyo, Japan. Great memories. I still have my board for posterity. My favourite I41 patch song is EMF's You're Unbelievable. My favourite patch overall is I36 Synth Bass 1.

I was in high school in the 90's. I was into alto stuff then, sonic youth, grunge etc. I despised 90's house and pop (well on the outside, i was into synths long from teens), an image thing then. I am now in my 40's and dj quite a bit. I spin so many 90's (with m1, d50, dx7 magic). It might be cheesy, but it gets the party going. Especially when age group is very diverse. Love the snap lead.

the music that made me want to pursue music seriously was pop-punk and alt rock when i was 11 or 12 (this was in 2008). I was purely rock up until the spring/summer of 8th grade when i discovered Benny Benassi and Daft Punk. My entire 4 years of high school were spent learning music production and a bit of DJing as well. Now at 24, i'm into it all and loving it lol funny how that works!

You picked some pretty obscure songs from the 90’s to showcase the M1. When it came out in 88 it was on just about everything that was a pop hit. Couldn’t turn on the radio without hearing it. Awesome board, wish I still had mine. My only complaint was how limited the onboard sequencer was.

I would argue m1 and d50 are the most used digital synts of the 90s.

Obscure songs?! If you lived in Europe in the 90s you would not be saying that lol!

Oh come on, Andrew. :) Not looking hard enough. I see a lot of decent players, but they are just too old to bother with uploading to KZbin.

I had an old 80's Kawai Organ that had the Organ sounds... only problem was it was a big ass Organ and half the keys were busted BUT it had the sound. Never knew about the Korg M1. Made my day • Honest²

Just the organ is enough to justify buying an M1. It's the deepest sampled sound ever.

Spot on playing (for the most parts) :) But the patches need a little editing. for those piano and Organ parts, they have removed the release time and for many tracks its totally clean of DSP effects too so that annoying Organ/Piano sound even more cheap. I used to have the M1 too, and switched to the T3 when it came out. T3 still sitting at home.. plays well, but display backlit is almost completely worn out. YOU FORGOT the Tenor sax Woody ... lol Those sounds, Piano 1, E.Organ 1 and Tenor Sax used to be a real love/hate thing for me, because how they have gotten abused in various shitty techno tracks .. lol Just the same as the DX-7 Harmonica from "I just called" Still remember the arguments I had with a friend that had the Roland D-50, wich one was best, but off cause the M1 was better .. lol Even the M1/T-series was based on 12bit sampling, many of the factory sounds and exp. pcm card sounds actually sounded real well if used correct. The D-50 was launched as a DX-7 killer The M1 was launched as the D-50 Killer :)
