Hey Woody, I'm a 50+ yr old beginner having a lot of fun with my go keys 3, adding the Roland DP10 pedal and the RH5 monitor headphones are good investments. To anyone getting one of these i would say start by learning how to make your own scenes as it is really easy and almost endless to what you can create. The chord sequencer is also really good and not too difficult to use, top tip is to use the zoom feature to edit chord changes in more detail. It really shines once you plug it into some monitor speakers.

The moment I saw Roland's own commercial video I new they had a winner. This is so much more modern compared to the PSR-E models from Yamaha. It's targeted to a young audience and has modern styles and ideas. We actually sent a 3 as a gift to a friend to start playing.

Great video! I have a regular home studio, but I also have a keyboard like this for the family, and I've wound up using it myself all the time. It's great if you have an idea in your mind that you want to quickly explore, or you just want to jam around for 20 minutes, just hit the power button and you're playing instantly, rather than powering up synths, mixer, studio monitors, etc. These types of keyboards are a ton of fun and sound great!

I was lucky enough to have a pretty basic Roland SoundCanvas keyboard when people were going nuts about General MIDI when I was younger and I think people forget that Roland do "fun" instruments along with the more serious stuff. I think one of the biggest differences over the year is the quality of the inbuilt speakers and of course the chips inside. Incredible value and I think every household should have one or something similar (because sadly not every household has enough room for an upright piano)

Great video Woody! I picked up my GK5 about a month ago and I have to say I am blown away by what it does for the money. I think the GK range has just singlehandedly destroyed Yamaha/Korg/Casio sales in this sector. The only gripe I have with it is the missing mod wheel which I think was a very strange decision by Roland, and I am really not a fan of the pitch bend wheel - it feels slippery to me and it desperately needs some rubber texture all the way along the wheel, as it doesn't feel natural for my finger to sit in the central groove. That aside, this really is a phenomenal keyboard for the price though and full credit to Roland for shaking up the market. If you add the WC-1 dongle (which comes with a free one year Roland Cloud Pro membership!), it becomes even more compelling as you can demo and write new sounds /styles to the GK on the fly through your android/ios phone which makes it so easy to get instant inspiration. It will be interesting to see what the other big players do to compete with this, because the GK's have no equal at present in my opinion under £400.

I bought the exact same model with you, sir. Love the Zen-Core Sounds, especially the default Piano (which I think sounds the same with Concert Jazz 1 from RD88 and Default Piano from new Juno-D) and Piano 1 Preset. Portable, also contain A lot of features, the one I love is a Bluetooth MIDI and because of Zen Core, you can actually import presets from Fantom or Zenology Software via USB. For information, Modulation feature actually avaliable via Firmware Update and go to settings -> common. Really enjoy this keyboard by far 😁

Hi Woody! Thank you so much for reviewing the Roland Go Keys 3!! That little keyboard is a honey, cute like a button!! I really can’t think of a competitor to the Go Keys 3. Yamaha has their ‘Piaggero’ line and even though these are actually built quite well and sound fabulous, they are more piano-oriented with only a dozen or so sounds to choose from - not a real competition to the Go Keys. Yamaha also has their PSR-E line but these don’t offer battery operation and IMHO, it isn’t until you get to the PSR-SX line that you start to get really great sounds. However, the cheapest model, the PSR-SX600, costs significantly more than the Go Keys 3. In your Go Keys 3 reaction video, you mentioned how no one is talking about it. It’s been several years now and I still can’t say I understand Roland’s marketing policy. Marketing = Money! That, however, works both ways! It costs money to advertise a product but it also brings money. One doesn’t work without the other. I really want the Go Keys to be successful for Roland. Then they might consider returning to the arranger scene. The arranger market is in this void right now - the prices have skyrocketed and many people are upset that they cannot afford their favourite instrument but have to settle for a more affordable one instead. Please don’t misunderstand, I absolutely love the Yamaha PSR-SX900 and it is a wonderful instrument, but even when I bought it two years ago, it was expensive enough. The new -SX920 costs even more, significantly so. The part that makes me especially upset is that Roland knew exactly how to make affordable-but-great arrangers. Not ‘cheap and cheerful’ but truly great instruments! - and for the same money as a midrange Yamaha or Korg. I mean, take the Roland BK-5 for example - it’s a solid platform. It has all the arranger functionality, great FX section, built-in speakers and a mic input. Why not just add the Zen Core sound engine to make it a tremendous value!! Cheers - Tunka

Great review, thank you, I think I may have room for one of these in my arsenal. I already have a Go:Piano which has proved incredibly useful in the last year or so (when performing at care homes, being small and lightweight). It’s always worth mentioning that something like this can be run from a battery power bank with the suitable cable. I do this all the time and it’s very convenient compared to hooking up to the mains power or draining regular batteries.

I have the original Go:Keys and Casio CT-S1, like the Go:Keys 3, major wish list feature is the dual ¼" stereo audio outputs that the Go:Keys has, with sonebother upgrades. That's my next keyboard. 👍 😎 Eagerly awaiting your Go:Keys 5 video. I forgot the details, but I believe the upgrades on the 5, but I believe the main ones are the aforementioned audio outputsl jacks, louder speakers and expression pedal input jack. The 5 is a more affordable version of the previous blockbuster arranger keyboard with 88 keys, the FP-E50, but at half the price. The sounds sre incredible, plus the additionsl Roland Cloud library. I girgot if the dongle accessory fir direct access to the cloud is only on the 5. I love this color, but only available on the 3, so will get basic black on the 5. Nice, simple streamlined design for keyboards in this price range. Until I want or need a Roland 88 key ibstrument, luke the RD-88 EX or Juno-D 88, the only other keyboard I really want is the Yamaha CK61, but the 5 will keep me occupied for a long time.

I suck at guitar so ages ago I bought an M-Audio Keystation 88es so I could suck at keys, too. I tinker with it now and then but it's been mostly mothballed in its box for 14 years. The GO:KEYS models make me want to try again, but this time with something that doesn't need a PC. The lack of MIDI doesn't bother me. I don't have any music training at all, but that didn't keep me from chording a guitar and singing along, and I have a very good sense of rhythm. I'd likely "go" for the 5 as it has outs and a mic input. Amazon Canada has them on sale for $100 less than the usual Canadian price of $550 and $700. ($315 US for the 3, $420 US for the 5.) Having a crappy dollar works to our advantage at times 😁

Hello Woody. Great video ! Thank you. I have questions : 1. Is there a "one finger chord" mode that allow to play a chord with the left hand ? 2. Is there a way to create user arranger style : for example a very simple style with only 2 tones (no drums, or others Roland onboarded styles) : a first one (example : strings) automatically plays the chords progression, and a second tone (example: synths) is for me playing a melody. May be can show this in your next Go:Key 5 video ? Thank you.

I recognised several of the sounds you played from my RD-2000 stage piano. Personally I wouldn't consider this for a second keyboard. The lack of MIDI ports and lack of a numeric keypad are dealbreakers for me. Even my old JV-80 (which I do use as a second keyboard) has both of these. The lack of any Mod wheel function is also a concern. Mind you, I'm probably not the person that this is being marketed to.

Such a cool instrument, sounds awesome, but it's ₹47,000 in India, which would translate to $553, that's an insane markup (Yes the Go Keys 3 and not 5), and much higher than the usual in my Country. I wanted to know your opinion on buying something more reasonably priced in my country, like the Casio CTX 9000IN (CTX 500 outside India). Though it is an older instrument, it's a much more complete package with line outs and just 22k here in India.

For the price range this is very revolutionary. A professional quality sound in a cheap arranger keyboard? Really a 21st century thing! But frankly, for beginners ANY modern arranger is already good enough, including the classic Yamahas or Casio CT-S500. Although Roland sound is something special and it beats the competitors, but nowadays it is really hard to find a keyboard which sounds bad. Yeah, the CT-S500 sounds flat in comparison with GoKeys, but it still sounds good enough and professional enough to have fun or even to play in a band.

Huge kudos for Roland for not making a beginner keyboard that isn't utter garbage. Unlike the other one who refuse to improve their extremely abominable products. Yamaha should really do better by putting some of Tyros or PSRS sounds on 300$ keyboard.

Funny how Roland puts the ZenCore engine in the Go Keys and the Juno X / Fantoms and nothing in between. But this isn't real ZenCore. The MC-101 is the cheapest thing with a working ZenCore engine. It has 4,315 patches and knobs/faders to edit them. And it gets updates like a flagship product. The Go Keys has 554 patches. It's a bad keybed, it has no knobs/faders, and it has almost 90% of the patches removed. And it's definitely not a flagship product that will ever get updated. You'd be better off getting an MC-101 and a used Launchkey or KeyLab. Or admit romplers are awesome and get an XV-5050 or JV-2080. Roland has great patches and the best thing about them is the different ways they use modulation/velocity, and that's hard to appreciate when you've got a sketchy keybed with no mod wheel. It's like getting a D-50 and removing the joystick.

your points are all valid, except this is real zencore as far as i am concerned, i spot many same patches in mc101, juno-d

@ Fair enough. It's just a shame Roland doesn't let their engineers make artist-first gear with legit patch management. If you're paying less than $1,700 for a synth then the only way to save a patch you edit is in a scene, and even if you're getting a flagship synth your ability to do sound design is limited in a way that makes things difficult to integrate with any workflow. If you get a $2,900 Jupiter X you get 512 user patches and an editor (which isn't great). Juno X gives you 256. If you get a $1,000 MC-707 you get no user patch memory. If you get a $450 MV-1 Verselab you get no user patch memory and limited tone editing. If you get a $350 GoKeys 3 you get no user patch memory, limited tone editing, and most of the patches are missing. They say the reason they don't reissue the synths people love is because they're "not chasing ghosts," but their whole business model is monetizing nostalgia via Roland Cloud subscriptions, not making functional synths. Even if you get a Jupiter X it's not very easy to work with patches. You're going to want to use Zenology. But then even if you get a $229 lifetime Zenology Pro key, exporting patches for ZenCore machines then importing them off an SD card - which you then can't preview like factory patches - isn't exactly a smooth process.
