I prefer it to Warhammer Fantasy, which people have started to play more at my local hobby store. The models are better looking, largely available (unless temporarily sold out), the game play isn't as needlessly complicated, it scratches the itch of playing a rank & file game, it's far cheaper and CMON continues to add units to existing factions while adding new ones. There is some balance issues (but that exists in 40k, AoS, Oldhammer etc.) but CMON seems pretty quick to address them of late. The rules are free, the army builder is free and even all of the tactic cards - unit cards are free if you print them yourself (though I'll admit that cards in the box are way nice and you get A LOT for $16-17 (far more then GW gives for their overpriced cards). The hardest thing is finding people to play, but if you can find 2-3 people that is all you really need (and maybe you'll convince others to give it a whirl).

The game is Amazing, dynamic, CHEAP and easy to learn. absolutely give it a try 🥳
@SuperEagle1122 жыл бұрын
Agreed with all. It really scratches a 5th edition fantasy itch. Super easy to learn but hard to master and the tactics board changes the dynamic of the battle greatly. Take a chance and try it out!!

Incredible game. It’s right up there with MCP for me as one of the tightest and most enjoyable rulesets.

Not actually got around to trying MCP yet, definitely on the list!

I'm considering getting into this, but must admit I'd be all in on a white walker faction
@WoodyREC2 жыл бұрын
That would be incredible… maybe hard to balance, but I’d definitely pick them up!

A comment one year later...The problem is who would the Commanders/NCUs be? The Night King exists only the show, so they would have to make up their own, which I imagine they are hesitant to do.

I'm thinking of getting into SOIAF. It's 2024 so I'm a little late to the party but it looks fantastic. I like the Nights Watch or Baratheon so after the starter box I will probably get them

Drawbacks: finding people to play, table size needed and models are not poseable and single pose
@StevanEC Жыл бұрын
They are not single pose, in a box of 12 every miniature has a different pose. They come prebuild, thats different.

If this game had LOTR combat system, it would outsell most Wargames.

I agree. The game is accessible to new gamers. Everything is in the box. New units are affordable and can be played out of the box too.

I'm a Kickstarter backer. If you play this game competitively I recommend only getting the card upgrade pack for a single faction that is your main, maybe also for your second faction as well, don't buy for every faction that you own because the cards will be outdated in a year. As mentioned, the tactical faction deck are the most important cards that you actually use and it sucks when CMON overhauls them. I'm personally wary of playing in tournaments because of the ever changing profiles and cards. Prefer friendly games anyway with like minded players where upgradeing isn't necessary.

This game needs skirmish rules. I've lost interest in moving trays around full of soldiers with swords/bows/clubs. Give me some damn terrain CMON

I tried it and didn't love it. I liked how movement is solved, very elegant and the politics worker placement is a nice touch. The game was too predictable, though, and I don't mean randomness. I actually like only a little randomness in games. Random charges are an awful solution and disorderly charge is probably one single dumbest rule I have seen in a while. By predictable I mean that when a player's turn comes they have a choice of 2, maybe 3 sensible moves and just perform one of them. No surprises. My main wargame is Warmachine and it is so exciting to think a situation one of the players is in is insurmountable only to see them use the game's toolbox so creatively and cleverly that to everyone's surprise they manage to get out of trouble. I haven't experienced this in Asoiaf, player moves are predictable and obvious and as a result the game also is prone to snowballing -first person to get an early upper hand is going to win most of the time.

Spent a year buying and painting and just didn't turn out to be for me. Constant rules changes to attempt to balance factions. Cards and rulebooks are constantly being changed so although free to print it really isn't free when you add your cost to buy printer ink and pay full price for a unit box and your cards are immediately useless. Then if you purchased the recently released faction card packs those quickly were affected by another update. If you like miniature wargaming with 3D terrain this is not a game for that type of play. Although the rules touch on and provide limited 3D terrain it is not widely used or accepted in competitive play. The turns can get very bogged down with all the combinations of modifications to rolls and if you play games for a narrative element the story isn't there, instead it gets lost amid meta conversations and list building. Just sharing my opinion and experience. Many people enjoy this game and are willing to spend a ton of money buying multiple starter sets and box sets for multiple factions and I applaud their passion and dedication. I recommend playing a few demo games with friends to see if this game meets your expectations.

Sounds like a cake walk compared to gw lol. I mean printer ink... really? Clutching for straws there abit. Try multiple $50 books every few months let alone army prices then we can have a discussion.
@rampantrambling2 жыл бұрын
@@jakea3950 Also the "constant" updates really means 1 each year. The game is basically in a second edition called 2021 now, which was a large update, but the recent and presumably future yet to be announced updates will probably be small too.
@JayzusKhrist2 жыл бұрын
@@jakea3950 I play 40k religiously and I’ve never bought a $50 book every few months for my army.
