A big thank you! Watched this tutoral during my lunch break, and could buy what I needed and made it tonight under 2 hours. Paid less than $20 vs the model at $70 on Amazon! Great video!

This was a great project Mike but I have to say it brought back bad memories for me. My grandmother knitted me a pair of swimming trunks when I was about six. They fitted perfect until I came out of the water, as I walked up the beach they held so much water everyone thought the tide was going out, fully soaked they weighed more than me. The worst part was the gusset was dragging through the sand and my skinny little leg never filled the leg holes any more. I decided to stop wearing them last year and am now very happy with my shop bought trunks. Great show of talent on swordsmanship while turning the spindle by the way. All the best Tony

Here in the colonies those are called 'yarn caddys'. They are fun to make. I had seen them at a yarn fair made with lazy susan bearings, but the problem with that approach is that the bearings carried by the local shops are too large, and the cost, including shipping, of purchasing smaller bearings over the internet is unappealing. So instead I adapted an idea that I saw in an internet advertisement. I made the spindle hollow, and attached a 1/4" brass post to the base that extends through the rotating platform into the hollow spindle. The top end of the post is rounded over and polished using emery cloth. I drilled a hole in the spindle with a standard 7mm drill bit used for drilling pen blanks, and then glued a spare 7mm pen tube in that hole. To provide a hard, smooth bearing surface for the polished end of the post to rub against, I turned a scrap of HDPE (from an inexpensive cutting board) into a tapered plug that slipped into the top of the pen tube, and that was locked in place deep inside the spindle when I glued in the tube. The post was made from what we call 'all thread'. That made it possible to drill a hole in the center of the base and tap it for the 1/4"x20tpi threading of the rod. By rotating the threaded rod in the threaded hole, I could adjust the height of the post to provide the desired clearance between the rotating platform and the base, and then a drop of CA glue permanently locked the post into position. Bottom line is that this approach is lighter in weight, and quieter, than the caddys I've seen using lazy susan bearings, and at about 1/3 the cost.

Sounds like another good method Louie, but the lazy susan was under £2 , I didn't think it was an expensive project. Thanks for watching Take care Mike

Well done Mike. Saw one of these in a knitting shop recently. Indeed the lazy Susan was recessed and it had a 1/8" gap between the top and bottom plate. Still looking for a source of round lazy Susans that don't have the big square flange plate. Also, they dished out a recess in the top to keep the wool contained. Doubt it matters, but it did look nice.

John Lockwood Thanks John, this was a "raw" first attempt, and a few changes have been made since, including the recess, nice idea too regarding the dished out top. Take care Mike

Hello Mike, Thank you for 15 minutes of sheer pleasure. I really enjoyed all aspects of this project. I have been wondering since would your good wife be interested in knitting a hat for Brendan (Baconsoda) to keep his head warm in the winter? I have to disclose a secret which I've kept hidden for many years but one of your subscribers has allowed me to bring it out into the open. It's still very difficult for me but when I was child my mother knitted me swimming trunks. Oaksho has come out and admitted to the same so I don't feel so alone any more. You have no idea what problems this has caused me during my life. Heavy sea water, skinny legs, knobbly knees, purple body due to the Arctic temps, - it's all there . I feel so good now that I can come out. Very many thanks, Alan.
@MikeWaldt10 жыл бұрын
Hi Alan, I'm really glad you enjoyed it my friend. Regarding the "hat" I will have to work on that one ;) Also I am relieved that you have finally got that terrible experience of the woolly swimming trunks out in the open. I think it could be a life changing time for you. I just hope that you can adjust, as the mental scaring must have been tremendous. I had a similar problem when I was told that I wasn't brought up by Mr Evans' flock! Take care Mike

Hey Mikey! You say this is for your wife? I'm not buying that at all. We all know that knitting is your first true love and wood turning is a very far second. Either way it is a brilliant project. I need to make one for me mum. Thanks as always for your time. I promise someday you will receive a parcel from me with a chunk of walnut. The few pieces that I do have is just not worth the cost of shipping. They have very boring grain. I will find you a nice burl worthy of shipping. Hope you and yours are doing well. Take care my dear mate.
