I think the best way to describe it is that they don't want you to cancel any animations. So if you start to take a step but you need to move backwards becomes you were about to walk off a cliff. Rock-star controls will make you walk off that cliff but most other games would let you change directions.
@RedStar_N711 ай бұрын
I'm very surprised Pat seemed to have no complaints about that with the RE4 Remake. Original Leon could start and stop his run on a dime and could even do full 90 degree turns by snapping his aim to either direction. Remake Leon is heavy. All his movements carry so much momentum that sudden turns will trigger a short sliding animation where his legs bend to shift his weight away and the delay is just long enough that an enemy can hit you during that. I was so hoping Woolie would catch him on that and call him out
@malikoniousjoe11 ай бұрын
@@RedStar_N7I don’t think you realize that context changes when heavy controls and control locking up adds to rather than detracts from game feel. In a survival horror game, sluggish controls can add gravity and tension, like a Silent Hill or old school tank control RE. In Mecha games, sluggish controls can emphasize the weight and size of your craft. GTA is a stupid run and gun shooter that controls like shit a lot of the time, despite seemingly having its design centered in arcade style fun which tends to rely on snappier, twitchy gameplay. Driving is great, but my character on foot feels heavier and dumber than a semi truck, and it’s not that hard to grasp why that can be a turn off to some players.
@night195211 ай бұрын

Take mass wealth inequality, a large proportion of the population living with decent weather (minus the humidity) but with little to do, massive influxes of people from a variety of backgrounds, chronically underfunded social services, a weirdly resilient/risk taking centered culture (living with huge annual hurricanes does a lot to ones outlook), and a political culture skewed into overdrive: and you have the ingredients to get Florida type shenanigans. You do need variety in the gameplay to shake things up and not get repetitive (you can see what happens in FF16's case when you don't do that). However the way they do it in the Insomniac Spider-Man games is unfortunately very intrusive. What I think they could have done is put more emphasis on Stealth and the Puzzles (no Bioshock pipe puzzles pls) and those would be enough to keep things fresh. That, and I got to see firsthand how weird it was to have barely any other races be present. I'm still not used to it and it makes me feel uncomfortable to be honest, but being in a place like this reminds me that there are plenty of white people who just aren't exposed to other races of people much, and those have to be the ones that are somehow angry about GTA6. As somebody who lives in Florida, I am in fact as white as Pat. That said, you would never find me on a beach. Also, speaking of the state-wide 'Florida Man Event', it's a culmination of five things. 1. Almost every kind of drug tends to come into the United States through Florida's waters. Access has a heightened chance to trigger FM Madness. (For context, there were kids in my middle school selling and using). 2. The general heat of Florida causes mass dehydration, heat stroke, etc... which is, again, another chance increase of FM Madness. 3. Inability to communicate with a notable percentage of our own population. A wildly higher fraction than you'd expect of the people in Florida (specifically in my area) do not speak English or have such a bare minimum understanding that communication is nigh impossible. This combined with certain politics leaves that section prone to wrratic behavior and disassosciation with people outside of their cliques. And no, it isn't just Spanish. I have in fact come across asian and haitian cliques as well, and that number grows as you get closer to the beaches. Again, another FM Madness increase. 4. Politics: It is a 'swing state'. In other words this week we're Republican. Next week we're Democrat. Both sides radically change things back and forth whenever they can causing instability on a societal level. One more chance raiser. 5. Disproportionate Wealth and Government Assistance. This is, by a wide margin, the worst one. You got people in yachts. You got the 5 huts next to a farm where 'immigrants' live 4 months a year and buy fifths from the local 7/11 and Circle K like it's rations. I know the location of a literal castle in ny city. And I have seen the portables less than 5 miles down the road in the other direction, with dirt roads. I am a security officer paid less than 15$ an hour. The people who live where I work bought me and my coworkers an 8 person snack platter for christmas that would cost me a paycheck because they figured why not. The disparity in this state is so wild you can't drive more than 10 miles without entering another dimension of 'is this even the same city?' Between all of this, and the fact that unlike most of the U.S. all criminal acts can be shared publicly without consent... Yeah, Florida is a shitshow publicly, while being only 'kinda' a shitshow sometimes, and usually only certain places. Usually the South side of any given popular city (Orlando gets that the worst).

List of games that are more responsive and smooth than modern GTA/RDR: Saints Row Sleeping Dogs Days Gone Dead Island Horizon Zero Dawn Ghost of Tsushima Hitman... If you've been out of the GTA loop for a while, you might assume that GTA games would control something like Sleeping Dogs at least, but they really do not. To compare something like Ghost of Tsushima to RDR: in GoT, when you get on your horse, you are already controlling the horse during the mounting animation, you're free to keep moving because it's a video game. In RDR, you are waiting for every canned animation to end before you can affect anything as the player. As Pat mentions, the turning circle of characters on foot feels so long like you are driving a vehicle, but also your acceleration feels sluggish... The reason for it is presumably to stop animation chopping and flitting movements, but from an interactive perspective, it's a big hinderance if you value snappy controls.
@msbkaioken13611 ай бұрын
It baffles me how people are pretending like they know anything about animation or game development and are just using excuses to basically say they're impatient, or they'd just be objectively wrong, which is also very likely.

Pat's gripe about the controls in modern Rockstar games is spot on. It's the main thing, besides the stupid GTA tone, that stops me from enjoying most of their games. Worst thing is, the token first-person mode is actually nauseating with how it keeps jerking your camera around because of animation frames instead of making like every decent first person game and leaving it alone doing nothing. It took effort to make these games control as bad as they do.

To be generous, Rockstar enemies do have some absolutely amazing hit reactions; if you shoot someone in the leg in RDR2 they will go through an extremely believable process of stumbling, losing their balance and falling - all completely unscripted. But that being said, that's pretty much ALL the combat in those games has going for it. The enemy AI doesn't engage with the player in any meaningful way outside of heavily scripted events, almost every encounter boils down to shooting galleries that are only differentiated by the context they take place in, there is virtually no enemy variety despite there being clear avenues of opportunity via visually distinct gangs and factions, and none of the player's guns are every different from any other gun in the same class of weapon. It's pretty wild how underbaked the combat in a Rockstar game is when you think about how much fucking time the average player will spend fighting enemies in any given playthrough.

Just to put an argument forward, I do get annoyed at what some people call "woke garbage" The biggest example I can think of is the MCU. Grew up watching the MCU, always had good and bad movies, but nowadays there seems to be a real push for replacing all white men with either females, minorities or female minorities. I don't consider myself racist or sexist, I just think the diversity is so forced and the movies suffer due to their focus being on inclusiveness instead of the actual script. Just wanted to put that out there.
