To me, the post Bahamut portion of the game feels like "let's go on a tour through the continent so we can learn how much of a bunch of losers the leftover bad guys are". Wich i honestly really like, there's a ongoing theme on this Final Fantasy of "all of the bad guys are kinda pathetic under the surface". - Benedicta was a emotional wreck. - Kupka was a simp. - The mother was shallow, full of prejudice and was only able to acomplish 90% of what she did because she was born in the right place. So honestly the fact that the "masterminds" behind most of the issues in the story ("momma's boy" Barnabas and "i suck at my job and it's YOUR fault" Ultima) are just super powered losers helps keep that theme going.

Ultima works for me as a final villain because the entire game revolves around the theme of “people don’t give a fuck about those below them on the societal ladder.” It’s absolutely everywhere and is why Clive and Cid keep repeating their goal of wanting to make a world where people can die on their own terms instead of what their slave master/commander/emperor/god tells them to die for. So the actual creator of the land itself being just as egotistical and uncaring for others the same way Anabella is feels like a really nice bookend to the game.

I feel like the point you bring up is interesting because the thought that pops up in my head is "the last portion of this game is if you switched over to Gurren Lagan, but if we were watching that we would be so hyped, so why do I feel dissapointed when we change to that direction in this game?". It might be that the player has grown comfortable with how the narrative is structured and told, and it can feel unsatisfying to suddenly switch over to something that "feels" completley different and without having the time to accept that this is where the story is heading. I feel like the point I'm trying to reach is that I would be fine with either direction if it stuck to it to the end, or at least gave enough breathing room to not mind the change.

8:25 I'd say that aswell. There's different degrees of how much Ultima manipulated or even took over people. For Anabella I'd say it was either straight up nothing or barely anything. Emperor Snoof, according to Dion having been a better person in the past, probably took a bit of a push by Ultima(maybe) and definitely Anabella and beeing ultra-religious and blindly believing his astrologers, but like Dion himself said "his actions are still his own". Benedicta and Kupka were fully Ultima free aswell. Meanwhile Anabella's emperor child was fully taken over. [spoiler] Barney is another one who was heavily corrupted, but even for him it took a moment of weakness of his own initially to allow Ultima to gain that much control over him and it's not clear how much of that is even by magic and how much was just Barney becoming a normal cultist for the Ultima religion.

To be perfectly fair to Annabelle. Her obsession with noble bloodlines has directly to do with her in her setting. It matters to her because it matters to literally EVERYONE. She is a woman in a feudal setting where a woman's greatest asset is her womb and her ability to carry on a noble and powerful bloodline. If you are raised to live for that purpose. And the child you bear ISN'T the fking pheonix when YOUR WHOLE BLOODLINE has often spawned the eikon bearer? You're gonna feel like utter crap and would want to compensate that trauma. You had 1 job from birth and you fked it. Like Joshua got it in the end. But Clive is the strong son that everyone is saying should be the true heir because Joshua dying from anime sibling disease despite being the pheonix (which actively worsens his condition). Like no shit everyone at court would be talking mad crap towards her. From a simplified perspective. She birthed a failure and then a weakling. None of the commoners give a crap. But the only people she interacts with cares and they've bothered her about for years.
@tylerhenderson5871 Жыл бұрын
To be unfair to Annnabelle, she relished in being a vile piece of crap. Clive didn't decided to be born without the Phoenix, and dialogue in the prologue implies he sought to be strong both for Joshua's sake and to try and prove his worth to his Mother. Joshua also didn't choose to be born frail, and does his best to help out. No matter what sort of pressures she may have been under, the way she treated here family is not justified. Her massive hate-boner for the Bearers and actions taken against them speaks for itself.
@sunkeyavad6528 Жыл бұрын
@@tylerhenderson5871 Explanations vs justifications. One can understand the mechanism of how she came about without it being an excuse for the actions. Just like how irl "oh sad stories" should not matter for criminals in court irl. Almost everybody has one and yes monsters are almost always previous victims themselves. Lots of statistics and studies about in psychology and criminology, like violent criminals coming almost exclusively from either neglectful or abusive households and never from a loving 2 parent household. You can be both a monster that needs to be dealt with and a past victim. The vast majority of monsters are.
@tylerhenderson5871 Жыл бұрын
@@sunkeyavad6528 I know the difference between Explanation and Justification. The problem with Annabelle is that her Explanation isn't reflected anywhere else in the games lore beyond her own obsession with blood lines, to my recollection. Other then Dion, Clive, and Joshua; none of the other Dominants come from Noble bloodlines. Dion isn't even completely of noble stock, since his mother was a commoner. The Eikons themselves seem to just pop up based on some unknown criteria. While Annabelle's family may have a odd frequency of producing children with the Phoenix, that only really implies correlation, not causation. As far as anyone is aware, the Phoenix simply chooses members of the Rosarian Ducal family to be born into, and Annabelle's family just has the highest number of marriages with the Ducal family. Unfortunately, due to how little we get with Sylvestre, we have no idea what his reasoning for marrying Annabelle was. He seemed to have no particular interest in the whole bloodlines thing, considering he didn't even think of making Olivier his heir until after Annabelle started scheming against Dion for being low-born by her definition. She may have just simply charmed her way into his Court and eventually into being his Empress. From my point of view, Annabelle's victim status rest solely on her own claims. Considering her actions and behaviors, I am primed to distrust her account without further support from the rest of the story. (Apologies for the later edit, but it just occurred to me that Annabelle's reasons were given as a result of Clive demanding to know why she betrayed them. So within this context Annabelle is both explaining and attempting to justify her actions.)

Spoilers obviously to the end of the game. I'll be honest my favorite parts of the game were the demo to Ifrit and then Bahamut's fight, the rest was mid. Ultima had a really, really strong start with an Eldritch horror vibe during the Typhon segment, but then the moment we learn "oh he's just the alien god of this world" it's just another generic JRPG villain. The amount of games we have from the east that is just "Ope time to kill our god!" is honestly so frequent I'm surprised when it doesn't happen. He's also incompetent for the rest of the game. Speaking of incompetence, Barnabas. He wants to be Vergil coming back a few fights, to beat us and then leave, and he wants to play Sasuke with 'cutting bonds of consciousness' but unlike the latter and former, he's absolute trash at either. He beats us, and then acts like we've had a whole chapter instead of a nap in between our first and second fight to the point the dialogue felt unfinished. He has no tension because all he never changes. The game about giant robots (armored core 6) did the theme of the story (human will's superiority) better and more subtly than this game. It's felt like a complete gotcha because the tone of that demo and the rest of the game are two completely different stories. From a more high fantasy GoT to basis b**** JRPG and slave bad story, like no crap who would of ever thought, and they never go deeper either. I'm not sure how they managed to make me care so much in so little time about the characters in the duchy and failed so miserably at making me care about the characters other than Cid after it when they had a whole game for it. Gameplay's great, first few hours are stellar. But after that the story just drops to hardcore mid. It's fantastic popcorn time though.

Final Fantasy 16 has the same problem that I personally have with Dark Souls 1, where at a certain point in the game I feel like putting the game down because I don't feel interested in any thing that comes afterwards. With Dark Souls 1 it was mostly because I felt the game peaked too early (Anor Londo) and every area afterwards had lots of problems and signs of being rushed that stopped me from enjoying it in any major capacity. With FF16, it was because every plot-thread I was engaged in either stopped being the focus, or concluded abruptly. I already felt cracks after the Titan fight, but everything after Bahamut was the point I lost interest completely.

I've said this before but my big thing with FF16 is that it's hard to start with really grounded ideas and themes and then work your way up to more simplistic and fantastical ones. There is functionally no reason Ultima even needed to be here.
@TheLordMagmar Жыл бұрын
Ultima is the grounded ideas and themes given deific importance though, that's the entire deal with him. He's all the human evils you've been fighting given a punchable godlike face.
@skieth9999 Жыл бұрын
@@TheLordMagmar Yes, I do not think slavery and discrimination needed to be given a deified face to punch. I do not think it's a very compelling plot point compared to everything that happens with Anabella, or even the broader pressure that the blight and Mother Crystals put on VAlisthea. Ultima is the least interesting part of the game, despite being the main villain

bahamut is probably the most boring eikonic shift sadly. at least the gigaflare ultimate is sick as fuck though I wish it could at least do something while you're dodging
@DeepestDankest Жыл бұрын
Bahamut's Eikonic ability actually becomes way more accessible to use once you realize certain bosses just have that phase where you can't interrupt them but they're going to do a series of 2-4 incredibly telegraphed attacks for you dodge into and immediately get a level 4 megaflare off of. But yes, trying to use it in mob fights is inconsistent but that's what the other abilities are there to clean up with.

Yep it’s pretty funny how the last two Shiva and Odin are the most busted. Like damn level 5 Zantetsuken and Shivas diamond dust and dodge are so damn good never switched those two off after.

@joshromero1796 It almost seems silly how all Clive needed was ice powers and losing his virginity to beat Barnabas but in reality all he needed was Shiva's Witch Time

@@DeepestDankestTbf Shiva’s witch time is really really good tho,losing his virginity was a just a bonus lol.

Accountability is kryptonite to women. The best part is all Annabella had to do was NOTHING and Rosaria would have became the world's only superpower. She was absolutely right about her womb being prime real estate, she made two eikons and they also just happened to adopt another.

Of course pat and Woolie would like the bad writing with anabele near the end. Clive literally doesn't mention anything about the black shields Maria and more and she kills herself like that out of character trash.

"I wonder if classic FF fans like the swerve" tbh I think it just makes the game feel wishy washy. If a game wants to have a kind of story or theme it wants to develop, backing off it to be "more FF" feels like yet more hamfisted fan service of the kind CBU3 does far, far too much already. Be your GoT drama or don't, don't try to have your cake and eat it too.

I dropped the game after the Bahamut fight. Just completely lost interest and didn't want to have another 10-15 button mashing, particle effect filled section during the spectacle of the next Eikon fight. I don't blame Woolie for losing interest. The only draws for FF16 for me were the combat and the story. Both of which leave you severely wanting more. The combat and enemy roster is lackluster and is a worst DMC and the story had tons of promise but underutilized 85% of its characters and wastes them.

I can't play FF14 because that game just doesn't respect your time.
