Not very long after this song came out, Pendergrass got involved in a very serious car crash, he survived but was paralyzed from the waist down. He seriously thought of stepping out of life, since singing and performing was his reason for existing. Come 1985, Pendergrass had been in that deep depression until his friends Ashford and Simpson (The ones who had that hit with "Solid") decided to intervene. They were booked to play Live aid and told him "You're going to be there too, it's been too long since you performed!" So his wheelchair was brought on stage and Pendergrass launched into "Reach out and touch somebody's hand" and that massive crowd was led by him into this enormous congregation and you can see him glowing, so happy to be back on stage and singing. Look it up, it's a must watch clip if you want to see somebody scoring a victory over himself.

RastaSaiyaman: To be a bit more precise, the song was released in June or July 1979; his accident happened in March, 1982. To some, that may not be very long; to others, it would feel like almost 2 1/2 years. Teddy's appearance at Live Aid seems to have a variety of perspectives: Teddy's (wherein his appearance was his idea); Shep Gordon's (his manager) version (discussed in the documentary about Shep called "Super Mensche"); and this one. Somehow, I suspect that some combination of Shep's version and the Ashford and Simpson version is probably closer to the truth. But I agree. For those of you who have not watched that video of Teddy with Ashford and Simpson at Live Aid, you need to watch it. I will warn you, if you are prone to being a bit emotional, you might want to be prepared. This is a powerful return and you just might want a tissue handy.

He did a show in Las Vegas with only "Ladies" and they went wild. In the 1970's Smokey Robinson created a Musical Genre called "Quiet Storm" that featured some of the hottest R & B Songs of that era. Him, Marvin Gaye, Donny Hathaway, Barry White helped alot of "Folks" be born in the 1970's. Sadly his career ended with his Car Accident and Paralysis. One of his Songs "You're My Latest My Greatest Inspiration" was featured in The Wood. He was to Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes what Rod Stewart was To The Jeff Beck Group, what Jackie Wilson was To Billy Ward & The Dominoes and what Peter Wolf was to The J Geils Group, the undisputed Star.

I know this is like the worst kind of cliché but life hits some people way harder than others. Teddy Pendergrass was like the biggest artist in the world since leaving Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes and embarked on a solo career. One evening just outside his home he got very badly injured in a car crash which made him unable to ever walk again. He's with God now 🙏☝
