Yeah crap outdated road design. No cycling space. Add cycling space then people have room to pullover or stop during a breakdown. That’s way too small for a road with way too much traffic, it this was a low use country or residential street then ok, but it’s not.

My dept is often understaffed and laid back and sometimes as a jr I get to sit in the front, and while I've never driven one of the rigs yet, I know it helps a lot, and too few people help even though they really should. The driver can't possibly keep every piece of information straight while being aware of everything going on.

@@AmericanArchaeologist the first officer or Captain as some departments call them , that firefighters responsibility during a response is to look for the hydrant locations of the current call if it's a fire call , listen to dispatch and communicate with the engineer on where to go next in the event of a relocation of the apparatus , and they not only watch for hazards while en-route but they also assist in operating the sirens and air horn if the passenger side has floor panel buttons for the Federal Q and Air Horn.

I'm a retired FF, and I must say, it is real easy to run the truck out of air over using the air horn. No air means no brakes. It happened to me. I didn't hit anything, but I missed a turn and had to turn around and go back.
@BC-of7qx3 жыл бұрын
Well your air in the truck builds up as your driving, just gotta know how to use the air horns and oay attention to your psi gauges
@Suedeman3 жыл бұрын
Newer trucks won't let you run her out of air with the horn the protection valve would cut in
@TadTrueman3 жыл бұрын
Air brake systems have 2 braking systems in one. The spring brakes, also called emergency or parking brakes are always applied unless there is adequate air pressure to release them. The service brakes are what is applied when you step on the brake peddle. As long as the spring brakes are adjusted properly, they will start to apply when air pressure gets below around 40 psi. The low air alarm should come on at or above 60 psi. So if you do run the air pressure down, you won’t “lose” your brakes, in fact you’ll stop, usually a lot more abruptly than you’d like. That’s IF they’re adjusted properly, which if you have a decent apparatus maintenance program they should be. A problem I’ve heard happening with fire apparatus, especially on longer responses through heavy traffic where a lot of braking is needed, is the brakes will heat up and once they get too hot they start to fade. That’s usually what happens when drivers think they lost air pressure. Drum brakes which is what most air brake systems are, heat up quickly, especially with a vehicle as heavy as a fire engine.

Now makes me realize fdny has a harder job than I thought
@DJDoorGuy3 жыл бұрын
@@TadTrueman hence why you should always try to pulse the breaks and never ride them or that fade will come a lot quicker. One of the main purposes of the Jake brake along with proper shifting, even in an automatic. Unfortunately today with the push buttons many younger drivers do not understand how to do this. Our area is loaded with hills and if you do not utilize the Jake brake and downshifting properly you’ll get the fade quick.
