Friends, whenever we give or receive a gift, we're always caught in a difficult rhythm of exchange and mutual obligation. The great exception to this rule is God, who is utterly gratuitous in his giving. But in Luke’s Sermon on the Plain, we are invited to share, by grace, in the very way that God exists and that God loves, giving to those in need without expecting anything in return.

I have never felt loved by God or anyone. Converted to Catholicism 17 years ago but I do not feel loved by God, but I still go to Mass every Sunday. I am marginalised by a hidden disability and really am despised by most people because I do not know how to interact well socially. I pray a lot, pray to feel loved by God so Father pray for me. I do pray for those who despise me (not all the time). I am now a Pensioner, have 2 friends who text me (one is my sister) but have no visitors. I was abused as a child, and I just do not get 'love'. I respect people, try not to hurt them. That is my best efforts.

God feels most deeply for us and desires our heartfelt praise and gratitude for His Grace and Mercy on our lives, and this of our own free will. Of our own volition and with daily gratitude we should glorify and thank Him for the supreme sacrifice His Son made for our salvation. So, too, we should humbly and thankfully acknowledge the gifts of the Holy Spirit, ever leading us to the Father. We are One Body.

At a time when we are on the precipice of a modern world war it is difficult to keep focus on God's "love"; the distraction of imminent death and destruction occupying so many of our thoughts. We are reminded here that the grace God bestows upon us is a healing and loving grace; a gift we can hold in our hearts, despite all else. I pray for the strength to accept it as it is given to me.

This is beautiful. I live in Japan where gift culture is actively fostered as a means of promoting mutual obligation, which will then lead to social cohesion. It can be quite constricting and manipulative at times, although there are of course many instances of genuine love and friendship shown with gifts. Your message, Bishop Barron, might resonate especially deeply here.

@@esbenz75 I don't think it's the best (stylistically) but I think it's the MOST IMPORTANT. This is the clearest explanation of the difference between Christianity and the world. Being a true Christian requires a radical change of attitude towards our neighbors, a willingness to sacrifice oneself for the salvation of the other: willing the good of the other as other without expecting anything in return. This is how we become saints. Very important sermon, indeed!

After my husband passed away, one of our employees sued me for money that we could not find was owed. The matter went to court, and was backwards and forwards for several sessions. One morning, I came back from a peculiarly difficult mediation,. I was totally exhausted. I didn't have the money, and was sure it was not owed. I opened my bible, and the first words I saw was If thy brother ask for thy cloak, give him thy body coat also !!!!. . I thanked God and was quite prepared to go back to court and accept the debt , asking time to pay it off. The judge looked at me and commented..."Mrs Grace, are you as tired of this matter as I am?"I answered in the affirmative, and he ruled that I pay a token amount and awarded the costs to the opponent. I only had to give in for God to come in.>:)

When I was a child [1960s/70s] my parent always taught me 'not to give to receive', in other words not to give with the hope/expectation of something better [either material or a favour] in return. As an adolescent I struggled with the Biblical quotation the it is 'More blessed to give than to receive' [Acts 20:35]. Now, as an adult [actually quite elderly, I'm 63], I realise the meaning and importance of this verse.

But when you get to the party you see a load of presents much more expensive then your one..... ......But a few days later your friend come and thanks you and says that your present was the best of all.

I needed this this week Bishop Barron. It’s very hard to decide you’ll truly only give and have nothing, to only be held and fed and supported by God. It’s specially hard when you’re dealing with family. It’s easy around people who can’t hurt you but when it’s from your closest and dearest it’s very hard and only God is our refuge. To love your neighbor as you love yourself when your neighbor is your family. “Enemies”are easy to love without expecting return. But family mistreating you? It’s not easy to skip ungratefulness and hard critique about choosing no monetary success, no glory, no possessions, specially when it comes with true concern because you’re not living as the world expects you to live. It feels as if you’re speaking different languages. It’s hard to not seek being understood but to understand. When success can’t be seen with material objects, only God holds us when in others eyes you’re not living your earthly potential, it’s only God who holds us when we’re disrespected. When someone expects you to be the CEO and you choose to simply give and help others with their lives. I want to defend myself. When you have to call on to God to come help you when it gets hard. This is what giving your life to God truly entails. The struggle. Dear Lord, wash away my fear and negative emotions, may I feel You strongest when attacked or overlooked, may your Love flow through me still, specially then. Be Forever my refuge and my guide, I love you, Amen ( btw bishop, Nice hair cut )

God needs nothing from us.... Really!? So, we are not to thank God for all of our blessings!? We say "thank God" all the time! It's called respect and love for our God who gives us so much. It's not feeling obligated to give something back. As good as the Bishop's message is, it can be misunderstood. Yes, God does not "need" anything from us. I get that. However, let's be clear. Being thankful, respectful, and showing appreciation is not the same as an expectation to return something. It's common courtesy and thankfulness. What a world it would be if no one said thank you or wrote a nice card of appreciation. This does not mean the giver is expecting something in return or is not giving unconditionally.

“ love as God loves” , but…, but , we’re not God. I live and love in my finite , human mind. This is very hard to do from our human experience. . I love the idea of it, but my goodness this is hard. There is so much injustice in this world, cruelty, pain, and endless suffering brought on by others. I know nobody wants to hear this or cares, but when my husband was dying in the hospital for months my siblings save for one , where nowhere to be found. Why? They were angry at me for loving and caring for our mentally ill and alcoholic sister. Imagine. How dare I show love and mercy to my ill sister. I cannot forgive their revengeful and spiteful behaviour at my husbands suffering and subsequent death. I’ve been to confession about this. The priest told me to pray for them which I do , but I just can’t seem to forgive and forget. Thank you Bishop Barron as always.

We are instructed to love one another as we would love ourselves. Second greatest commandment. Love God above all else the first greatest commandment. But as humans are minds are so acute and we have had so much rhetoric served to us from movies, books, social media that it seems impossible to be able to carry out this second commandment. But if we think about it we can never achieve the first commandment if we don’t do the second one. Because to love Christ is to obey Him. And He charges us with the second commandment. We will never get it 100% right. We are human and drought with failure but the effort to get it right moves the needle forward. And if we can only get it right 10% of the time and everyone gets it right 10% of the time how much better for the world and humanity it is. And as long as we continue to try slowly we will make small incremental improvements in humanity and the world. To get it 100% seems to be overwhelming, but the concept of moving it forward even if only in small measures is not unattainable. A journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step. I pray we may all start taking the first step together. Amen.

Thank you Bishop Barron for this great message about Giving as God Gives. This is so true. Christians are to pray for those who hate you, mistreat you, use you and the list goes on and own. Never get revenge or judge anyone just leave it in God's hands as God is in complete control !!

Sing me a song, you're a singer Do me a wrong, you're a bringer of evil The devil is never a maker The less that you give, you're a taker So it's on and on and on, it's Heaven and Hell The lover of life's not a sinner The ending is just a beginning The closer you get to the meaning The sooner you'll know that you're dreaming So it's on and on and on, oh, it's on and on and on It goes on and on and on, Heaven and Hell I can tell Fool, fool

This sermon brings to mind something a good Jewish friend of mine told me. She said they are taught that the greatest "mitzvah" you can give to someone is to "throw dirt on his grave'. Because this gift is a true gift. The receiver is not obliged to do anything in return.

Thanks Bishop Barron for reminding us to give without expecting anything in return. When I give something or some service to others free of charge, I expect them to be grateful and do not keep on asking to do more for them.
