Thank you! Thank you! Bishop! Billy was instrumental in my conversion in 1991. I left the Catholic faith as a cradle Catholic. After losing a son shortly after birth, I grieved myself into a terrible depression. God seemed so very far away. One day, I turned the television on and heard this soothing, melodic voice speaking to me..."and he loves you." (speaking of Jesus). I fell to the floor and sobbed as I listened. Today I practice my Catholic faith, but I''ll never forget the day I turned. God bless Billy. I've been praying for him ever since.

The German lutherans never fully recovered from their ill choice, nor will the American evangelicals.

Cardinal Wotjyla invited Graham to preach in Krakow in 1978. Wotjyla had to cancel his own appearance at the rally; he’d been called to Rome. In 1979, shortly after Wotjyla was raised to the papacy, Graham appeared on the Phil Donohue Show, and when asked about the new pope, Billy referred to him as a man of “real authority” who didn’t “pull any punches.” Who knows what it was that drew Billy to see something in the Catholic Church that so few “evangelical” leaders before him were able to see? Maybe it was the moral clarity of the Church, or its sense of history, or the way it saw the sacraments as a way to level the playing field between prince and pauper that made Billy Graham sympathetic to the Catholic Church. Maybe it was the universality of the Church that appealed to Billy. Graham at least tipped his hand when he remarked, “I feel much closer to Roman Catholic tradition than to some of the more liberal Protestants.”

I guess I'm naive but I really didn't realize until recently how Non Catholic Christians really judge us Catholics. I will give us Catholic at least this much credit... We fully tolerate And respectfully disagree yet embrace other Christians and individuals with other beliefs as well. I mean, up until the mid 16th century it was only Catholicism and Coptic pretty much as far as Christianity went. Let us not forget what motivated Henry VIII to convert If somebody disagrees or corrects me I am completely open to that as I am not a theologian. I however still assert that other Christians might want to reconsider the intolerant judgment they place upon us Catholics, and I continue to believe that we are embracing the true religion.

I was agnostic, but I attended one of Billy’s Crusades. It was in Kansas City around 2005. Billy was instrumental in bringing me to the Catholic Church. He had a simple message that he stuck to so faithfully that I can recite it: “Jesus is the Son of God. He came down to Earth to die for our sins. If we accept Him, our sins will be forgiven. We will gain admittance heaven.” So simple. So beautiful. He said that the only Crusades that didn’t do spectacularly well were the ones where he didn’t emphasize that simple message. Maybe he got off course or maybe he tried to say too much. But he said that when he stuck to that simple message, God spoke to people’s hearts through him.

Jori Church; Thanks for sharing your testimony.Welcome to the true faith. I agree Billy Graham changed people's hearts.....changing your behavior leads to self awareness leads to knowledge then to morality.I think you would agree with me that Billy Graham gave you a glimpse into your sin.The first step to wisdom is being able to recognize your sin! this is a gift and grace that God gives us when we are getting close to him. Because your soul will realize the perfection of God and how we have fallen but his grace and love encourages us for salvation through Christ. For John said; If we say we do not sin we are only deceiving ourselves and truth is not in us.

john b Hi! Yes, I would agree that he gave me a glimpse into my sin. But what was more important was that he gave me a realization of the marvelous grace of God. It was truly awe-inspiring. In that stadium, the Holy Spirit was palpable. Teams of people prayed in the weeks leading up to every crusade that the Holy Spirit would fill the stadium. And it WORKED! It’s very difficult to describe the awe of being there.

As they say the truth will set you free. As catholics usually our conversions can be credited to our parents who guide us in the faith and of course the catholic priests.But you being agnostic where do you go for inspiration.This is what I mean when I referred to Billy Graham leading people to Christ. Who can counsel the Lord.The God of Israel is amazing. God shows his mercy to whomever he wishes. They say in heaven many will be surprised who are there. So we can't judge others; God has his reasons his criteria is different than ours. I admit I can be judgemental and I have to be careful. Christ also reminds us remember you were once a sinner too. It's a good time to reflect awareness this time of season Easter. Christ does not want us to point fingers. Sorry I am giving a public confession here lol.
@iris__and_rhizomes6 жыл бұрын
john b Lol. No apologies or worries. What you said was good. I was raised Methodist, but my father told me that the Catholic Church was the church Jesus started. My dad was Methodist because they were the church that led him to Christ. They took him in and gave him a home when his home life wasn’t the best when he was a child. But what he said stayed with me. In my doubts later in life, I finally asked God for help learning the truth about Him. I just heard Charles Stanley say today that that is a prayer God will always answer. When people have doubts about God, I tell them to pray that He show them the truth. I think God must have committed me to the care of the Blessed Virgin Mary because I felt strongly called to start praying the rosary even though I was not Catholic. Don’t ever discourage someone from praying the rosary, because I think it was the supernatural power of the rosary and Mary’s intercession for me that brought me to the Catholic Church in the end. So it went like this: I prayed my prayer to God for help knowing the truth. I attended the Billy Graham Crusade. I watched EWTN. I began to pray the rosary. I began to attend Mass. I finally joined RCIA.
@johnb46326 жыл бұрын
Jori Church; Wow! what a testimony.Yes the Virgin Mary mother of God is very compassionate to sinners.Your father was a wise man. Usually for protestants it's a mental block or pride from keeping them from joining the catholic church.Usually Mary is a stumbling block for protestants.But you seem to understand right away.Very good. Jesus never ever refutes his mother. The rosary is the weapon to defeat satan. She is the Queen of the Clergy. At 18 I was considering the catholic priesthood. But God still gives you a freewill. I chose to raise a catholic family. Just yesterday someone made a comment about Our Lady of Laus. Now I have heard of this shrine in France. My wife and I were already looking into going to France next summer to visit Lourdes and La Salette marian shrines in the French Alps. Laus is only an hour from La Salette.Are you familiar with these shrines. The Vatican approved Our Lady of Laus in 2008. These apparitions happened in 1664! lol Vatican is a little slow. Fatima took 11 years to get approved. Laus is a refuge for end times the same way it was a refuge from the French Revolution and WW1 & WW2. It was said near end times that this gem/refuge would be known for catholics throughout the world.I just found out about this shrine yesterday! Another tip to learn divine mysteries through the Virgin Mary is the Devotion of the 7 Sorrows of Mary see link. Rosary on training wheels. I went to the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association event(Love Hanoi) in Hanoi, Vietnam last year. I cried so much in the beginning. Why? They had a "play or presentation" about the reformation and spread LIES about the Church. The usual protestant lies such as: the Church not letting the people to read the Bible, and Martin Luther as the hero, the Catholic Church as not the real Christian Church. Also hurts me when I heard them call out Catholics in the street from an announcement from the loud speaker outside the venue. Like if you are Catholic, we advise you to join us (in Vietnamese) not exactly what they say because it is not my first language but it is the thought. Seems like they want catholics to abandon the Church and to just accept Jesus Christ as Personal Lord and Saviour at the end (as if Catholics don't when in fact, we can accept Jesus Christ daily with an intimate relationship with the Eucharist). I am so sad that their next destination is the Philippines which is a Catholic country. I hope the Filipino people wouldn't be deceived. Please pray with me for the Philippines. Many protestant pastors amassing millions upon millions of dollars: Osteen, Meyer, Prince and so on and so on enjoying celebrity lavish lifestyles, expensive clothes, vacations, driving Bentleys, Ferraris etc. etc. partying, having sex, have to downplay or criticise or demonise the Catholic Church for it teaches Christ's true word and exacts obedience, chastity and poverty from its religious in accord with Our Blessed Lord's desires. The Catholic Church then troubles their conscience as indeed it must do! Hence it is in their interests to criticise it, many of course even try to demonise it. Peace.

@VinyMon Ortiz I don't care about any video. I only care whats in the bible. And the apostols didn't build catholic churches, they were persecuted. Church is not a building but a group of people. God doesn't abide in a building made by human hands for all of the Earth is his property. With the new covenant established WE are the temple of the Holy Spirit! Read the new testament it says it there. If it doesn't says it there prove me wrong.
@dariobethesda64505 жыл бұрын
@VinyMon Ortiz Nobody took books from the bible , catholics added them. We are not worshiping the bible, we just believe its a word of God because Jesus fullfiled it. God himself says that sacrifices don't mean anything if your heart is corrupted. Sacraments don't mean anything if your heart is corrupted. You don't know the word of God because you don't know him. Catholics are making some statments that are unscriptural and that come from their standards and morals not from Gods because they don't know God. The world does not know God because and does not want to know him because it loves evil. And then they start making up religions that lie to you that you need to do some deed or go through some sacrament to enter the kingdom of God. But Jesus says that no man who is not born again shall enter the kingdom of heaven. Ask yourself are you born again? Or you still love sin and your heart is corrupted in the face of the Lord?

Why would a Catholic Bishop waste his precious time on a deceased anti-Catholic who often spoke out against Catholics, Doctrines, Dogmas, Sacraments etc. even after The Holy Bible was written by all Catholics, instead of bringing more souls to Jesus Christ and His established One, Holy, Catholic & Apostolic Church?

Is it unfair or perhaps a tad hard of me to make the observation Billy Graham amassed a personal fortune in the multi-multi-millions of dollars, enjoyed celebrity status, extremely high social standing and adoration? His ministry paid off super-handsomely, as it does for so many pastors, some of their personal fortunes apparently in the hundreds of millions of dollars. Whereas Catholic religious take vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. Probably just me, but those type of fortunes and such celebrity standing does make me uneasy. Luke 18:24-34. The likes of St. Therese of Lisieux and St.Padre Pio's life and commitment are for me the true and prime examples. St. Therese for example surrendered a fortune, as did the likes of St. Katharine Drexel, she surrendered and GAVE AWAY MILLIONS to live a life of obscurity and total prayer, following of course Our Blessed Lord's own example and teaching. The Catholic Church at its very core endorses Christ's Love and his way.

one thing I'd *really* like to know about Billy Graham...How was it possible for him to have all those interactions with Catholicism without becoming Catholic? I mean, his whole life was about union with Christ...so, his encounters with the Catholic church, with the tradition, saints, liturgy, apostolic succession, eucharist, etc, should have made him feel like a starving rottweiler in a butcher shop.
@jeffersondemott21256 жыл бұрын
Wayne and Donita probably a similar reason why C.S. Lewis never became Catholic. Sometimes our human follies both within and without the church prevent some from the fullness of faith.
@amark3506 жыл бұрын
Wayne: As a Catholic, I agree that the theology is the most correct and is the One true Church. However, from God's perspective, He's more interested in saving souls than getting all aspects of theology correct ... Perhaps God foresaw Billy Graham being more effective as a protestant preacher than a Catholic priest (and looking back on his life, it certainly seems to be the case)... Believe it or not, there are people that protestants can reach better than Catholics. Therefore, even though Billy lacked the fullness of the faith (from a theological perspective), he was still in union with God's will for him (covered by grace to make up for short-comings).... In other words, it worked out for the best.
@wayneanddonita38576 жыл бұрын
Word Bearer, if memory serves, C.S. Lewis' only "issue" with the Church was Papal Authority, and yes, that would be clearly traceable to the human folly of an "anti-papacy" upbringing. also, he had the Anglican church, which, as far as I can tell, is a pretty legit Christianity. so, in his case, exposure to Catholicism would be like putting a "well-fed-but-on-a-forced-vegetarian-diet" rottweiler in a butcher shop, or maybe a methadone patient in an opium den. but the Christianity Billy Graham had was pretty bare-boned "suit, tie, and Bible" stuff. plus, he was also practically golfing buddies with the Pope! so I would have guessed his vocation to the Church woulda been utterly irresistible.
@wayneanddonita38576 жыл бұрын
amark350, I agree that many folks would respond better to protestantism. but a lot of that is probably more cultural than theological. indeed, I praise folks like Billy Graham (and Fulton Sheen) for breaking down those cultural barriers.
@sstroh086 жыл бұрын
amark350 Agreed. He was working with mostly atheists I think it's fair to say. In my opinion, atheists that realize the truth tend to fall in love with Jesus and then just be simply Christian. Then soon after some learning they pick a denomination. His non-denominational approach likely helped a ton and that I why God used him as such.

1 Timothy 4 Warnings against False Teachers 1 Now the Holy Spirit tells us clearly that in the last times some will turn away from the true faith; they will follow deceptive spirits and teachings that come from demons. 2 These people are hypocrites and liars, and their consciences are dead. 3 They will say it is wrong to be married and wrong to eat certain foods. But God created those foods to be eaten with thanks by faithful people who know the truth. 4 Since everything God created is good, we should not reject any of it but receive it with thanks. 5 For we know it is made acceptable by the word of God and prayer.

Can somebody help me? I have been reading The Faith Explained and realized that it is too way complicated to live the catholic faith. What part of it? The commandments as taught by the Church. We have a sinful essence. How can someone live this faith to the letter?
@peterj6740 Жыл бұрын
Alex in answer to your question as written by the apostle Paul ......It is the letter that killest but it is the spirit that gives life . We are all sinners while we have breath in our bodies yet no matter how great we sin we have a saviour who always forgives us ........where sin abounded , grace all the more abounded . A saint is a sinner who never gives up and strives to be perfect but never in this life achieves that goal

So far, all I have encountered about Billy Graham is that his preaching was extremely focused. He would not touch all the teachings of the Bible. Who would not agree when one hears that Jesus died for my sins and to believe in him, and believe in the Resurrection. What about teaching about the nitty gritty of everyday life, in all the teachings. It is enough to believe in Jesus and make it to heaven, I believe. But not all are called to be Catholic and embrace all of Jesus. All his peace. All his commands and all Jesus represents. If there is one aspect that is not accepted, or understood and not the thirst to seek this truth. Catholicism and fullness of truth, will not find you.

Would catholics say everyone BG led to Christianity referring ONLY to the gospel is not saved?
@andrewpatton51143 жыл бұрын
It is not for us to judge; God judges. What I will say is that anyone who willfully rejects Truth is not saved, and that every dogma tells us something important about God and our relationship to Him. God shows mercy on those who obey the measure of Truth they have, but no one can refuse to accept God as He is and still be saved.

America's Pastor ? Billy Graham was certainly NOT my pastor! The Ecumenical movement has been a two edged sword. It certainly has stopped a lot of the inhouse arguing and strife that was taking place among people who called themselves Christians. However, it also watered down the different denominations and made them lukewarm.
@trinitymplayers5 жыл бұрын
Not everyone believed Billy Graham was a true man of God. Especially in his later years, when he repeatedly avoided commenting on such hot button topics as same sex marriage, gay rights, etc. And Our Lord Himself inferred that true men of God are never loved or accepted universally.
