Friends, the Gospel for this Sunday is the wonderful story of Martha and Mary. But the Church sets this up in a really interesting way by giving us a first reading from Genesis 18-the mysterious story of Abraham being visited by three guests. The two stories together show us that the problem is not hospitality, nor being active as opposed to contemplative; rather, the problem is being focused on many things instead of the one thing necessary, in which everything else tends to fall into the right place.

POPE BENEDICT XVI: “God wants your friendship. And once you enter into friendship with God, everything in your life begins to change. As you come to know him better, you will find you want to reflect something of his infinite goodness in your own life. You become attracted to the practice of virtue. You begin to see greed and selfishness and all the other sins for what they really are, destructive and dangerous tendencies that cause deep suffering and do greater damage, and you want to avoid falling into that trap yourselves. You begin to feel compassion for people in difficulties and you are eager to do something to help them. You want to come to the aid of the poor and the hungry, you want to comfort the sorrowful, you want to be kind and generous. And once these things begin to matter to you, you are well on the way to becoming saints.”

My name is Martha... and this parable is the story if my life. Everyday I try to remind myself not to be like Martha. I often wonder... if not Martha then who? Someone needs to be the host. Maybe Martha was meant to be the host... maybe it's OK to fill the role of host, but not complain or worry... just hurry and join Mary? Jesus... please have Mercy on all Marthas.🌻

In John 11:27, it was Martha who, in answer to Jesus said: “ Yes, Lord I have come to believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who is coming into the world.” So, Martha’s faith is strong. Read verses 32,33, Jesus became “perturbed and deeply troubled” with Mary and her weeping friends. So, be the Martha God created you to be.

It's quite a different happening when the Holy Spirit ENLIGHTENS over the same text. I would think that has happened here through Bishop Barron. Incidentally there are several commenters who have noted the 'phenomenon;' I do hope and pray that all Christians may be open to receiving the Spirit's light and help either by themselves or by their being part of the Body of Christ☆

I am torn from my prayers by many concerns involuntarily. I return to my prayers forcefully only to be assaulted by the devil with temptations and impure thoughts. I again return to my prayers rejecting the invitation to entertain these thoughts that drive me away from what I am doing. This happens often but not always. I know that I must ask the assistance of Mother Mary or St. Joseph sometimes which is a sure way to escape the attack. I hope and pray that I can persevere in following the righteous path to Jesus whenever this occurs. Let me never forget that I cannot overcome without supernatural help from above.

When you pray my brother in Christ, pray with a soft audible voice in the private of your room. Also, the Satan has been dealt with at the cross of Jesus. Col 2:15 After the cross the devil is our own thoughts. The only assistance you need, is of the Helper Jesus promised will come to us, after he was ascended into heaven (a higher realm; nót a geographic place). You cannot pray to a human.. 'Mother Mary/St Joseph', as this are unBiblical. Jesus also had to die for their sins. John 3:16,17 The Help is inside of you, as all distance has been cancelled at the cross of Jesus. Col 1:26-27 We have been made óne with Him! (It's only the carnal mind that still pictures distance).

The scripture says, “God is not a man that He should lie. Has He ever spoken and failed to act? Has He ever promised and not carried it through?” God has never failed in the past, and He’s not going to start with you. Stay in faith and stay open. It may not happen your way or on your timetable, but God is true to His word. When you’re constantly saying, “God, You promised,” that’s what allows Him to bring promises to pass.

Oh marvellous! Bishop Barron you are surely God's instrument in my life if in no one else's - and that many many feel this way is certain. Be blessed even as you are a blessing!

One of the best teachings I've ever heard. And... I've noticed that when a great teacher really had something to say (teach), he usually says it in thirteen minutes or less.

I find this space when walking a pilgrimage. I have walked 2,000 miles on the Camino de Santiago and going again in September: God willing. I just let go of my modern world worries and God always finds me. It keeps me going back.

To me this story of Martha and Mary reminds me to keep an eternal perspective, which is reiterated elsewhere in Christ's teachings, e.g. "... seek first the kingdom of God ..." (Matthew 6:33). Putting God first is the only way to accomplish that. Thank you, as always, Bishop Barron.

I'm grateful for getting a triple no or two there, the double no is like home, but getting a triple when talking about the Trinity is so wonderfully fitting! I think the reason I have trouble with this Gospel reading is because it feels like Martha choose to serve, instead of to be served: While we want to give our best efforts to the Lord, they will never be as fruitful as allowing him to just shine his light upon us

What an amazing way to explain something so beautiful. What an incredible depth and simplicity wrapped in one. Loved your words! And thank you for illuminating something so complex in a way that gives clarity, hope, and enrichment. You clarified a mystery of life in a direct and transparent way. Thank you for your words. Your sermon was like a melody!

You've put that very well Monica. Mary carried the stillness within her, as deep in our core is where we meet Jesus. So glad I watched this video today.

Just the other day, I watched a video called « How to beat worry and live peacefully » which introduced me to the « Surrender Prayer ». Thank you for your sermon, which underscores the message. I guess Jesus is telling me something here… 🤗
