Sadly after reading the charges against Pope Francis, I think they make sense. I want to believe that he just trusted too much in some accused individuals and he made a wrong choice (probably driven by his efforts against the discrimination of homosexuals within the Church), but even if that's the case, it would be hard to trust in his leadership after this. Should he resign? I don't know, I will keep praying and I will be open to any opportunity to help to fix the Church in these times.

Thank you SO much for being such an empowering and humble leader for us. One of the most disappointing things is how all bishops have not been more outspoken in helping the laity process this. Your ability to be so bold and compassionate in focusing on victims and giving us clarity on how this happened, starting with your words on the Rubin Report, is fresh air and so comforting. You’ve been integral in the conversion of so many people I know to come into the Church: and you and your team have taught me all these beautiful depths of philosophy and theology and church history that I had scant knowledge of growing up Protestant. We watch your Catholicism series in my RCIA and in my Parish Bible study and the way you tell the stories of the Holy Spirit working through Saints and how dynamic Jesus was have made me fall in love even more with Catholicism. Thank you for working so hard and devoting all of yourself to God.

Thank you so much for this honest session and addressing this very painful topic. I am grateful that you stress keeping the focus on the victims and the fact that they have, quite literally, lost entire portions of their lives through the destruction of sexual abuse. I believe strongly that good will come from this--that God is saying 'no more' to the abuse of children--and that means in the Catholic church, other churches, schools, community centers, families. It is heartbreaking, but we are 'only as sick as our secrets' and I am glad this is going to be seen in the light. Thank God for opening this wound so that healing can begin. Thank you Bishop Barron. I know this was hard.

I always hear the year 2002 in relation to this crisis. With sorrow in my heart, I ask you to remember that the Archdiocese of Santa Fe had to start feeling the agony of this since the 90’s. The Servants of the Paraclete center where many US diocese sent their priests to be “cured”. Once here, they abused our children & then went home. All of this came out when our then archbishop was embroiled in his own sex scandal. We grieve deeply here for all who have been abused.

David DeTinne As a former protestant (18 years in a non-denominational Church) who just converted to Catholic Church last year,I had felt very painful and confused about those horrible events exposed almost everyday recently.I could not go to church for almost a month.Yesterday,I heard an inner voice within my heart:”Maybe it’s time for you to think more seriously about what’s the core reason you want to become a catholic ?”. If it’s only because of the good role model of a clergy,or good image of church member identity,then I am not a real follower of Jesus.If I change church again trying to find another “perfect” church with splendid fame,then maybe it’s me who are doing the “idol worshipping”. I went to our little Catholic Church in our neighborhood yesterday and happily found out that almost everyone had come to attend the mass. Our priests,brothers and sisters in our church..... they are sincere,good people and we help each other like a family.I am not going to abandon them! Yes,we all are “church”.Yes,we shall stay and encourage each other;repent and pray to God to heal us,guide us ;fast so that our mind and souls shall be more clear and strengthened by God to fight against any evilness coming;wait for and then support our trusted church leaders to unite us taking action to overcome evil with good under the guidance of The Holy Spirit.This is the worst time,but it is also the best time for us the catholic faithfuls to re-examine our faith and make sure it’s going to be built on the only true solid rock - our Lord Jesus Christ,His life,His words,His truth and His way!

Topsey Kretts Pretty simple Unless they answer the question no. We know priest have gone into the seminary with the sole purpose of abusing children. I'm pretty sure they were lying there whole way through in order to get closer to the children. Your solution does not protect the children . We need more safeguards Then just asking what their sexual orientation is. This is a very serious matter
@sickboy666fu6 жыл бұрын
Topsey Kretts I'm sorry but I dont think that's enough Or really gets to the heart of the problem. I think priest need to be allowed to marry. You you get a better quality man Who will be more likely drawn to the priesthood If they're allowed to marry. If a man is not allowed to have sex they can become predators. just like in prison. You'll have straight men who will rape other men. It's not a healthy way to live. Granted that won't completely solve the problem but I think that's the 1st and most important step. My 2nd step would be to use a polygraph to interview all potential candidates. 3 I would allow women into the sanctuary as priest. 4 We need an independent party to oversee the conduct of the priest 5 No priest allowed alone with any children at any time. 6 Do away with altar boys.

This is a refreshingly honest and reasonable assessment of an absolutely horrible situation, particularly the Bishop's perspective on Christ's continued work and influence in our lives and the current state of the Church, which is eloquently expressed in the final five minutes of the interview. As a Catholic struggling with the Church's unconscionable treatment of abuse victims and condoning the actions of perpetrators, and the factions within it perpetuating antiquated mores', I am encouraged that there is still a voice of reason in the Church and I urge the Bishop and my fellow Catholics to continue demanding for truth, transparency, and substantive action.

We, of the lay sector of Roman Catholics, have been waiting a long time for our clergy to finally admit publicly these sinful escapades which became evident years ago. At my current age of 88, having been deeply involved with the "Church" spiritually, communally, financially, and actively since I was born, I was taught to hold our Church's clerics in my highest regard. My outlook changed with with the joyful changes which began with Vatican II. Since then I have more recently acquired a very different perspective of the domineering hierarchical regulations and actions squashing almost all revelations, feedback, concerns, and recommendations from the laity. Thank God for this "bombshell" of enlightenment, awakening, and prodding of the laity for our desire to be treated as a part of the Catholic Community at-large. Submitted by Al Kudela
@kimfleury6 жыл бұрын
That's interesting, Al, because one outspoken priest has written a blog entry about how he and his fellow seminarians were trained to become friendly with older women in the parish and give those women control. So perhaps the feedback from the laity that you see being rejected isn't coming from your priest, but from the henhouse. When I read that priest's blog, btw, it fit with what I had been seeing in certain parishes for some time....but that's changed with the newer generations of priests, the ones who have been ordained since the late 1990s.

I agree we should ALWAYS pray for the church, especially members of the clergy, but what about actively fighting for true and meaningful reform??? All talk and no QUICK EFFECTIVE action will simply alienate the clerical hierarchy (including the truly virtuous ones) from the laity even more. Perhaps not today, not in two years, but if things continue along the same trend, what will be our church's future in 30+ years to come??? There's already a lack of priests and nuns and though this scandal SHOULD serve as a catalyst for us true Catholics to improve our Church, it won't be too shocking if people simply abandon our community. Hurtful but true. Some Catholics may be proud of our church's historic contributions to education, fine arts and charity (rightfully so) but these things pale in comparison to the plague and scandal that is just unfolding and can't seem to go away. 😫😞😫😞😫😞😫 🙏🤲 LORD HAVE MERCY ON OUR CHURCH, MAY THE GATES OF HELL NEVER PREVAIL AGAINST IT. ✝

This is the ministry of Christ, passed to Peter, down to us: it absolutely can be destroyed by the sins of the powerful and the clergy they protect. This is not mere Donatism, but the potential for a permanent discrediting of the Vatican. The Church is too precious and does too much good in the world to be lost. The sexual and physical abuse of the Catholic Church has been going on for centuries. The CC attracts sexual deviates, homosexuals, and alcoholics as priests. They are aware of the proclivities of their employees yet they continue to hire them. The Church needs to drop their celibacy rules and allow normal men and women to become priests. The Laity needs to takeover the hierarchy and institutional leadership of the Church. Father Wierdo needs to go, along with the other conspiratorial felons, Bishops, Cardinals, and the Pope who continues to turn their back on their congregants in favor of the sodomites, the adulterers, and pedophiles.

Thank you Bishop Barron, my heart is so broken about this but I have to believe that the Lord will rebuild his church. I think the best thing a person who loves their catholic faith is to gather and pray for this "crisis"; for the victims and the shattered lives. I know I can't even begin to understand what these poor victims have gone through but my heart is so saddened that this has happened. Every archdiocese should recommend that every "cluster" of parishes offer the faithful a time to pray in unity so our Lord can give us the grace to move forward.
@lindacosgrove79186 жыл бұрын
I honestly don't know; from what I hear this investigation is going back many years so not sure how this can be appropriately managed fairly; moving forward I recently needed clearances to volunteer in the Philadelphia Archdiocese and my take on this is that their is "zero tolerance" for abuse, and any suspicious inappropriate abuse MUST be reported by ALL to the authorities which include law enforcement; sexual abuse must be zero. I would like to hear Bill Donahue's take on this since he is the president of the "Catholic League" and an attorney. I agree with you that the Laity must act on this but it needs structure so the easiest way to help swiftly is to unite in prayer. The church will always be purged and crucified but in times like this I reflect on when our Lord asked St. Peter if he was going to leave him too (John 6) and St. Peter states "where are we to go, you have the words of eternal life". I will not leave Peter because of the Judas' of the world. I will end with Matthew 18: where Jesus states that "his church will be till the end of time". Hope in my lifetime the church can again return to its true mission in the world; instead of under this "cloud of shame". Peace.
@lindacosgrove79186 жыл бұрын
I am gathering more information and literally in shock about this scandal; just learning about "the Bishops & Cardinals" involvement. I have listened to Bill Donahue a bit and although I do not know exactly his "agenda" I did find that Bill Donahue does bring up the "slippery slope" that lifting the statutes of limitations should be lifted for all "abuse" allegations; catholic, protestant, Jewish, Muslim and public schools. How can any charge of abuse where the abusers, witnesses and victims are dead/too old can be properly prosecuted? I think the real question I would like to know is "Why was Cardinal McCarrick punished by pope Benedict then favored by Pope Francis who is now supposedly punished" (not sure what punished means since McCarrick should be in jail). This is a very dark day for the church, its "Moral Authority" is on the line; I pray the truth all comes out; I pray for the victims as well as the good priests/brothers/deacons who lead virtuous lives proclaiming the gospel; I'm afraid this conversation will be continued; peace.

If abuse is done by anybody then statutes of limitations should be lifted for all not just in the Catholic Church.

I'm not sure how laws are changed but I would want to treat all abuse the same. After the Sandusky (Penn State abuse scandal) every parent/ volunteer /coach who interacts with children at school/sports must have clearances to protect children, and although a huge inconvenience to most parents we know it's a must to protect our children. You can't extend statute of limitations on 1 group it needs to be all groups.

I watched this video shortly after it was posted, and I must say once again Bishop Barron provided a lucid, succinct, balanced, pastoral, and I could go on and on...it was comforting to find some kind of a rock on dry ground amid all the hyperbole and confusion that's now in the public space. I've spent the last 24 hours doing almost nothing but reading, praying, and pondering. I didn't poll any sites, but many said we have to pray. Sure we do; we've been instructed for 2,000 years to do that, but now we need to do more. Every single practicing Catholic is at once dismayed and outraged by what we're witnessing. We have not been able to trust the media for years, and now it seems we can't trust our own leaders. I wholeheartedly concur with Bishop Barron that what's needed is the truth, all of it, and the most effective and fastest way to do that is via exhaustive investigation led by laity with the proper qualifications and experience. Ultimately, we the Church need a solution. We'll never get one without the truth. And that the clergy is incapable of producing the truth is evident by the mess that they have created. I have a heavy-duty prayer life, and now I'm directing most of it in the direction of Bishop Barron's recommendation.

Just wanted to add, the abuses did not become demonic when church symbols were added, all Pedophilia and homosexually are demonic. The body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. Thank you for speaking out on this horribly troubling topic Bishop Barron. We feel helpless, shamed, hurt, and angry, out here in laity land, so please fight this evil from your position of power.

Great points by Father Barron. I also think that long-term should happen from the base up (lay people). We should also refrain from using euphemisms because in the long-run, being straight-forward and brutal is the way to go. As Catholics, we need to use this as a rebound for moving forward but certainly not forgetting. Serious changes need to happen in the leadership positions, that allows for greater transparency.

I truly hope the Church reacts quickly and strongly to this. If priests are not publicly excommunicated and put into prison, many, many people will never trust the Church ever again.

Ascension Presents, Bishop Barron's channel, and Catholic Answers are great resources to learn about the Faith. If you're more of a book person, Peter Kreeft and Scott Hahn have written many good books in this area. To become a Catholic, you should go to your nearest Catholic Church and talk to the priest about joining the RCIA program. I hope that helps! May God bless you!

Thank you, Bishop Barron for a reasonable, faith-based response to the evil that has been exposed in the church. I agree with your comments but I have to add that if crimes were indeed committed, then someone needs to go to jail. Honestly, if these culprits ever had Jesus in their hearts they MUST know that they are doing more damage to the body of Christ as free men than they would if they were justifiably incarcerated. The famous line in "Man For All Seasons" was something like 'It profits a man nothing to lose his immortal soul for the entire world. ....but for Wales?' I wish the guilty priests would have reflected more on that idea and taken themselves out of the game.

The guilty are most likely sociopaths. They probably don't even believe in God.

What may have been a personal challenge for me, was a repeated call to "prepare as if for war" while I was training athletically, as a form of physical self discipline. It was puzzling to me that, while training, I heard this message internally. In life, there are battle lines in every arena, from work place competition to social networking to personal battles, to the war games of intimate relationships where domination and internal struggles with passivity happen as well as how spiritual battles are being fought. This development of training the will through the physical discipline of athletics or music, writing, art, or scientific experimentation is a skill that transfers to other areas of life.

Thank you, Bishop, for speaking so clearly and poignantly on this enormous tragedy, not only for Roman Catholics, but for the Church Universal. As an Episcopal Deacon, in transition to priestly ordination, God willing, this Fall, I will continue to pray for you, Pope Francis and all of our Catholic brothers and sisters as the Spirit continues to "winnow" all of us, and guide us all into ALL truth, justice, and peace in, and through, Jesus Christ. I would also like to fast weekly in solidarity with you, and especially the victims of this, and other abuse at the hands of Christian clergy of any denomination. This is a real "come to Jesus moment" which we dare not ignore and which, if we are truthful, open, and transparent, may one day further reform and transform the Church visible into the kind of beloved community which truly deserves to be called the real presence of Christ's Body on earth, as it is in heaven.

These are indeed amazing times within the Church. However all this was foretold (1 Timothy 3:1-5, CCC 675-677), and we need to support the Church now more than ever (CCC 765, 748-750), and now more than ever, we need to “Test all things, hold to that which is good.” (1 Thessalonians 5:21) As we await HIS promises for those who remain faithful! I am glad someone is actually answering questions directly but this stuff has been going on for decades and yet here we are in 2018 and it's still coming out in large magnitude at high levels. I don't think we need a forensic investigation- it's systemic it's something that is deeply embedded in practice and I think the church already knows how it was aloud to happen and whose responsible for letting it happen. I am praying for you and all those people who have been deeply hurt. Sweeping changes need to occur quickly far and wide. The church has buried so much evidence over the years the investigation is not ever going to be open and transparent.

@@jayjaykay111 I am sure that's true but this is very personal for me growing up Catholic and family history of leader's in the church locally. I cannot speak for any other group or situation only for my own. Bishop your goodness, concern and sincerity shine plainly. I would humbly suggest that perhaps a cleansing of the temple would do the most possible good. By saying that, I'm not suggesting indiscriminate purging, rather ... a good way to separate the wolves among the sheep. It might make your resources reach the furthest possible places. I pray my message is the right one.

The wrong issue is being clouded by emphasis on sexual abuse. The scandal is the complicity and cover up. Exploitation takes place in all human institutions. With effective and immediate response this would not have become a Church scandal. Many perpetrators are victims of abuse. It is easy to see how this has mushroomed into a major Church scandal. Rather than focusing on individual abhorrent acts let us address the foundation from which they stand. Let the light shine into the darkness. So that the deeds done in darkness not put us to shame.
@johnangelopoulos20006 жыл бұрын
I really like your answer because it doesn't look for a single "cure all' approach. I’ve read other accounts throughout Church history, and Bishop is correct. As much as these accounts were ignored by clergy, they were ignored by the parents of many children. I read about parents-mothers and fathers both-who, when their own children tried reporting the abuse to them, blatantly ignored them. I read about parents who favorited priests to the point of worshiping them, caring more for how it made them look to associate with a priest than about the safety of, and care for, their own children. So, before casting stones, remember there is a lot more below the surface that needs to be considered if justice is to truly be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Man made traditions and rules have created this mess.. I had made up my mind to become catholic after 39 years of of being a faithful protestant. My wife was going to convert to Catholic as well. I don't think I can convert now. I feel if I did, I would be supporting a church I would be ashamed of. If the NFL had coaches that did this stuff and the owners and knew it and let it happen, their is no way I would buy a ticket or watch the games. I would not support it in any way.

I think that suggestion is key, we need to be able to prove who knew, what they knew and when they knew it, with professional, independent and transparent investigators. This would (hopefully) either help those accused by Vigano prove their innocence, or it would prove their guilt.

It seems to me we are past petitions and must demand it, and create an investigatory lay group, and a policing structure asap. But still no more gay priests please! It is simply avoiding near occasions of sin me thinks! If a man has gay inclinations, he should serve God some other way because unless his inclinations and self control are made of steel, a gay guy being with other men, is just too tempting. Let's just avoid the near occasion of this sin. As for the current clergy, perhaps an across the board visible penance for the sins of their brother priests? This might help atone for this grave sin toward God & the flock? In our diocese, we have a priest with season tickets to the NFL! I mean seriously! No more penthouses for Cardinals or Bishops? No more beach resort trips? I mean show us in example how you are truly repenting for your sinful brother priests. More visibility as to what you spend on? I will continue to pray for you Bp Barron, I will pray for all good priests (& ok even the bad ones) at our prayer cenacle for Priests from the Blue book of Father Gobbi! The church probably needs this humiliation to humble us :-( Lord forgive us for our arrogance!

I too was at the Phoenix Park to see the Pope. I saw John Paul 39 yrs ago also. As a former Teacher in a young offenders prison in Ireland, almost 25 yrs ago, I knew then that this was NOT just a Catholic church problem. It is a pandemic social problem. More must be done to show how this EVIL is a universal problem, not just a clerical one. And why particularly is it a Catholic problem (save for meaning that Catholic means universal) we have to do more on this communication? Yes I get it, that should we as Catholics try to explain this to the world, it could back fire. But try we must ; we live in an era of mass media communications and it has to be utilised to make accountable the church the law and society as a whole. This must be a universal struggle for reconciliation. There has never been a more important time for Church and state to come together. Even though modern secularism argues the contrary. This situation is so complex that it is possible the Holy father may be implicated. But if he is implicated, I believe that to be through innocence : this is a great Pope and we are blessed to have him, during the church's greatest scandal in History. Thanks Bishop Barron, your doing a great Job. Agape from Eire Matt
