Abandonment to Divine Providence and Fr. Walter Ciszek

Fr. Jean-Pierre de Caussade's spiritual classic, “Abandonment to Divine Providence,” taught that everything falls under God's will, from our delights to our challenges, and our happiness will only be fully realized in cooperating with that will. But does this include painful and traumatic experiences? What about COVID?
In this episode of “The Word on Fire Show,” Bishop Barron and Brandon Vogt discuss these questions as well as a priest, Fr. Walter Ciszek, who heroically embodied this spiritual principle.

Paul's life is an encouragement to me. Some of his best work was done from prison, teaching me that no matter how constrained I might consider myself to be in serving God, God is not constrained in how greatly He yet may use me. I just finished reading de Caussade’s book, The Sacrament of the Present Moment, adapted from Self-Abandonment to Divine Providence, Translated by Kitty Muggeridge. I was fortunate to obtain a used paperback on Amazon. God is truly present in our life, moment by moment, and It literally took me six months, moment by moment, to read this 100 page book! A true treasure of the Holy Spirit!!

If I don’t turn suffering over to God, I quickly become despondent. Faith is a great companion when traveling through life’s many periods of suffering. Faith has great utility in our lives, and I think that utility is a deliberate. I don’t pretend to understand suffering. I’m like a dog trying to understand calculus. I can only trust in God to guide me through the unknown.

Often we are ignorant of the divine will, and whether the suffering or trials which we endure are for our own benefit, or on behalf of another. Bless you, if you have become a sign of perseverance for others, but senseless is your suffering in your own eyes. Sometimes, these trials are designed to purify us, to prepare the tool that will serve God's purpose better. You need only commit yourself to that cleansing fire and linger no more by the edges of it. Go to the core. If you lack eyes to see it, you must climb the mountain of God. But dogs don't climb mountains! I know.. many of us must undergo metamorphosis to be able to, by becoming something else prior to that attempt to discover higher ground, where the divine will is more easily understood.

It is not only about even the permissive will of God in what is happening in this world. God gave us from the very beginning a free will and this expands on all decissions and our human doings. We spoil this world with our sin, individually and in groups even as nations, and this is the root of evil events happening where the enemy has an open entrance to govern instead to be pushed out!

Father Ciszek reminds me of Father Aedan McGrath, who I met, and who had similar experiences in Mao's China in 1949. A Columban missionary, Fr. McGrath was spreading the Legion of Mary throughout China, when captured and imprisoned. He also remarked that he was never ill through it all. God's divine protection. Praying he will also soon be made a Saint.

On one hand I am anxious and grieved by death, but on another hand I am grateful for life. I do have a sense of anguish and discontentment with the way the world is, but I want it to be - more, eternal, etc. I never had any kind of religion as a kid, adolescent or younger adult. A though from Augustine: God would be less powerful if he had to eliminate evil to maintain the good. It is more powerful who can handle evil rather who can not deal with it and had to prohibit it. Because God is all powerful he can even extract good from the evil we gave him.

You are right Bishop Barron, sin is what is uninteresting and boring. It brings to mind the case of the promiscous sex rife now due to online dating. A man who was in this practice confessed that he felt like 'a piece of meat'. Such behaviour dehumanizes us and makes our lives meaningless. May we all, Christians or not, ask God to give us the grace and strength to do what he wills for us. This will give us all the joy and happiness and fill our lives with meaning. It truly makes us miserable and sad to be slaves to our passions. Any wonder that there is so much depression today ?

Fr. Ciszek is buried in Wernersville, Pa at the Jesuit Center for Spiritual Growth with many of his Jesuit brothers. My wife & I have been on several retreats there & we always visit his grave. Our bishop of blessed memory +Michael Dudek of the Byzantine Catholic eparchy (diocese) of Passaic, NJ was friends with Fr. Ciszek & opened the cause for his canonization. The cause has since been taken over by the Roman Catholic church.

My grandfather grew up with Fr. Ciszek in the small town of Shenandoah, PA, and was one of his good friends, and so I actually got to meet Fr. Ciszek when I was a child when he got back from Russia. I love his book He Leadeth Me and my favorite line is "For just as surely as man begins to trust in his own abilities, so surely has he taken the first step on the road to ultimate failure. And the greatest grace God can give such a man is to send him a trial he cannot bear with his own powers- and then sustain him with his grace so that he may endure to the end and be saved." [And just a fun fact, he pronounced his name with a short "i" and not "eese," like in chick 🐣]

@@BishopBarron Hello, Bishop Barron Our daughter Kathy posted in the comments section yesterday about Fr. Ciszek and you asked her to tell you more about him. She thought I could give you a more detailed account so I will share what I remember about him via my wife’s account since I don’t do social media: My Dad grew up across the street from Fr. Ciszek on So. West Street in the Polish section of Shenandoah PA in an area known as “the rocks” which terminated at the railroad tracks. Dad’s father died in the 1918 Pandemic so his mother, who later became a 3rd order Franciscan, was trying to raise her 4 children as a single Mom. The kids in that area were a tough crowd. My Dad said Ciszek was a leader of the toughs, always looking for a fight and was mean and ornery. In hindsight that attitude served him well in the labor camps in a positive way in that he could courageously stand up to the worst of humanity. He and Dad attended St. Casimirs grammar school together although Ciszek was a grade or two ahead of him. Dad said never in his wildest imagination would he have thought Ciszek would become a priest at that time. When Ciszek disappeared from his radar and he lost contact with him, Dad said he knew in his heart he was still alive. Mom said the only time Dad cried in public was when he saw Ciszek outside the doors of St. Casimirs church after he was released from Russia and came back to celebrate Mass in his hometown. By a quirk of fate my family and I happened to be at my folks house in Shenandoah the day Fr. Ciszek came to visit Dad and Mom in July 1976. When I met him I was astounded to meet a short, soft spoken, meek, quiet, smiling man not at all like the 6 foot 4 inch, 250 pound man I had envisioned him to be. He chatted with us, with four year old Kathy on his lap and our one year old squirming on the floor, and asked me to tell him all about my career and schooling. I had a Ph.D. from the U of IL and was writing some books and he offered this advice: “Writing a book is easy as long as you are honest and telling the truth and talking from your heart.” Then he shared some things from his ordeals in Russia saying he always had his 10 finger rosary with him in Lubianka since they couldn’t take that away. He said he was constantly questioned and they tempted him with food and actually a naked woman to get him to confess. He said he thought a lot about his childhood in Shenandoah, growing up with my Dad and his pals, while he was in prison. Fr. Ciszek and Dad planned to go mushroom picking at a later date but Dad died before that transpired. He was so happy to see Dad and he gave us all his blessing before he left. We always got a Christmas card from him after that. He was so organized that we even got a card after he died because he had finished his cards early and they went ahead and mailed them out. We sent all our correspondence to Rome when they started the process of canonization for him. Fr. Ciszek sent us an autographed copy of his first book. I have loaned both of his books to all my friends who were so impressed and uplifted after reading them. As a side note, Fr. William Byron, also a Jesuit, served as interim Chancellor of Loyola in New Orleans where our youngest daughter was studying for her bachelor of music in violin. As we passed through the welcoming line at the opening reception for him we asked him if he knew Ft. Ciszek. His face lit up and he said “Wally and I go way back. He was my room mate.” Turned out Byron’s grandparents lived in Shenandoah and he and Ciszek knew each other somehow that way. Small world. Thank you for bringing Fr. Ciszek’s story to the public with such enthusiasm . We enjoy listening to your shows and sermons.

What about cooperating with evil? How does this fit in with surrender to God's divine providence? What about "lead us not into temptation"? Since the Fall, we are all sinners. How do we reconcile these elements into this conversation? What about the idea of our free will in all of this? I wish the Bishop would have gone deeper. There are so many levels that were not addressed.

I enjoy this show very much and listen to literally every episode and Bishop Barron is my de facto spiritual teacher, but the preface (most of which is irrelevant information) for this episode is way too long: 8 minutes and 15 seconds. How was rosary prayed at the time of saint dominic ? It has become so long that it is hard to pray all mysteries every day and I want to pray 3 mysteries . should I leave out " Holy mary mother of god pray for us sinners now ...... ? also Fatima etc?

As a non Catholic Christian how does this correlate with John 10:10 as the thief whose work is to steal , kill and destroy? Also that satan is referred to as the god of this world, how does this relate?
