Still no media categories and "replace media" function and ordering posts by drag&drop and advanced mail/smtp settings and expiration dates for posts and better widget control. But thank god for being able to manually update plugins/themes via the Dashboard, instead of having to upload them. WP5.5 broke some Dashboard functionality with some older themes.

Reducing reliance on plugins can be a good thing but still use hooks, filters, and the same poor database design. The features are still written with code, styles, and scripts that have to live somewhere so it may or may not really be an improvement.

You're right Casey, The Gutenberg blocks are modular, so they only load what is required for the blocks that exist on the page. Many plugins load their resources on every page even if they're not being used on that page. It's a starting point and a step in the right direction I think.

YOAST says that even though XML sitemap in included he encourages us to keep the Yoast version as apparently it is better. Not sure how specifically but might warrant investigating further.
@wplearninglab4 жыл бұрын
I checked out the WP generated sitemap. You can find it at yourdomain.com/wp-sitemap.xml The Yoast SEO sitemap and the RankMath sitemaps are better, that is true. The SEO plugin sitemaps will generate multiple sitemaps, one for Posts, one for Pages, one for Images. And then link them together with a main sitemap. The WP sitemap is just Posts and Pages and they're all in one. Yoast SEO automatically excludes pages like the Disclaimer, Privacy Policy, Terms of Use etc. from their sitemaps. And if you set a page to "noindex" in SEO plugins, those pages will not be included in the sitemaps. I don't see any settings in WordPress for excluding specific pages from the WP-generated sitemap. So as of right now, I think they're right, Yoast SEO and RankMath sitemaps are better if you need those extra features. If you don't need those extra features, then the WP sitemap works. And it's the first iteration of the WP sitemap and they have a model to follow in the SEO plugins, so hopefully they'll improve it.

So where to find the sitemap after new update ? Should we off the sitemap option in SEO plugin ?
@wplearninglab4 жыл бұрын
Hi Adbul, The WP generated sitemap is located at yourdomain.com/wp-sitemap.xml I think you should check out what the WP sitemap looks like and decide if it's good enough for your needs. I did a little more investigating and found that there is just one sitemap. Whereas SEO plugins create multiple, one for each content type on your site. For example Yoast will create a sitemap for Posts, a sitemap for Pages, a sitemap for Images and then link to all those from one main sitemap. At the end of the day, I don't think search engines care or give preference to the structure of the sitemap just as long as all the links are there and they're not broken. I hope that helps :) Let me know if you have any further questions. Thanks for watching!

Hi Peter, From what I can tell there is no way to schedule the auto updates. And autoupdates can be scary if you don't make a backup before the update. @@wplearninglab Thanks for that tip! I wasn't initially thinking about the backup aspect but yes, that would hopefully be part of what could be scheduled if possible. I will check out the MainWP tool since any batching of tedious tasks is helpful. at least then I'm not doing for a dozen sites one at a time.

Hi just wonderign how many plugins is too many? also do you have any intermediate/ advanced wordpress turorials that go beyond basic loop custom fields etc
@wplearninglab4 жыл бұрын
Hi Philip, It depends who you talk to. Some will say that even using 1 plugin is too many. Other people have 30 or more on their sites. My rule of thumb is that you need your website to do certain things. Whatever number of plugins you need to get those things done is what you need. Down the road you can always revisit a site and assess whether you need each of the plugins. Also, there are many plugins that can be replaced with code in the functions.php or code included in JS files. If you can replace a plugin with code, it's best to do so. I don't have any intermediate/advanced tutorials that go beyond basic loop custom fields at the moment.

That includes all the accessibility issues (as a matter of fact, I've seen several Trac tickets I took part on in the past getting lively again, all of a sudden, after having been moved from "next release" to "next release" to "who cares" status for years). The problem Wordpress has with adding these things is they usually do it badly with little control. The question is how does Wordpress handle Lazy Loading? Are there ways to control it? does it only work in the Gutenberg editor? This can create more problems than it solves if not implemented correctly. Gutenberg ruined custom layouts. It was a cluster fk rollout and messed a lot of developers up. Lets see if these "features" are as poorly thought out.
@wplearninglab4 жыл бұрын
Hi Lucas, I've recorded another video where I go into more detail on some of the new features and how they're implemented. As far as I can tell there are no ways to control Lazy Loading and they use the "lazy" attribute in the image tag, which doesn't enjoy full browser support yet.

Rofl, Gutenberg messed me up for about 5 minutes while i looked for the classic editor plugin. I use Visual Composer and you can kill it from the general settings page for that plugin.
@Sauvenil4 жыл бұрын
i'm a Gutenberg denier. Kind of ruins the whole point of having custom themes. I also dislike the current fashion of the industry... the neverending pages of extremely padded nothing. Gutenberg was made for that only.

Sir how to create a website like wix.com mins user come and make his website and published by my subdomain fully like wix.com
@wplearninglab4 жыл бұрын
Hi Pritam, Building Wix.com is not a small project. You'll have to learn some serious coding to make it happen. And if you want to get it done in a reasonable amount of time you'll probably need help from other developers. Something similar you can do is create a WordPress multisite. People can create their own sites in subdomains of the main site. But it's built on WordPress, so it won't be a clean interface like Wix is.

Passing data to template files is a real biggie for devs. We've been asking for it a decade! No more include(). Now if they can get guttenberg to a point it destroys all other page builders then I'm happy.

Hi Stephen, I don't think they want to destroy all other page builders. They just want to create a good content editing experience for blog posts and pages. Passing data to template files would be awesome. Hopefully it comes at some point.

I just tried on a site with WP 5.5 on it. I was able to bulk edit 3 posts at a time (I only have 3 posts on that site). I changed the author to someone else and it worked. You could be experiencing a plugin conflict. Make sure all plugins, your theme and your WordPress core files are up-to-date. Deactivate your plugins one at a time. After each one, try to bulk edit. Or you could cross-reference the plugins on the two sites you tried it on and just deactivate the ones that both sites have.

Another incomplete functions we need to disable on each website we made. Great! Why? Fo example sitemap. We don’t want every post type to by visible in sitemap. Lazy loading? Another javascript that will collide ... with the overall logic. My experience with version 5.5 has been disastrous !!! ... what I applauded the most about version 5.4 is that when you incorporate block plugins like Coblock or kadence etc, wordpress shows you a title differentiating from the elements that each Block contains special, but in version 5.5, instead of this differentiation, it shows a "savannah" with hundreds of blocks without differentiating the origin or the uses, that is to say, worst, the worst I have seen !!!, in fact I returned to my version previous 5.4.2
