WordPress Development Roadmap for 2021

How should you start learning WordPress development in 2022?
In this video, I cover a 'roadmap' that will help you get started learning WordPress development.

The first step is learning the basics of web development, like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Also, learning a CSS framework will help you a lot.
Then, you will need to focus on learning PHP and MySQL in order to not lose your way while developing WordPress websites.
After you have these basics in order, you will need to learn to use a tool like Local by Flywheel in order to set up your development environment.
Obviously, you will need to learn how to use the WordPress kind of PHP. You will need to learn how to use the WordPress functions, you will need to learn WordPress concepts like 'the loop', actions, filters, hooks, and so on.

Thanks for this video Andrei. How can one find a book or something that will teach WordPress as a developer, all the tutorials are teaching to be come a WordPress designer. Something that will teach WordPress basics like you highlighted, things like PHP WordPress, theme and plugin development, etc

Hey Kire, Thanks a lot for the kind words. I can't say exactly how much time it will take you. It depends a lot on how fast you learn and how deep you want to go in a subject. HTML, CSS, JS + PHP with WordPress can go really fast for the basics, but with mobile app development it can become pretty complicated pretty quick. Anyway, for that I would recommend Flutter or React Native for cross platform development.

I was planning to learn python as I finished Javascript backend Node.js, next.js etc but after watching your tutorial, Iam tempted to go for php instead...how much of php learning curve involved in mastering wordpress

Hey, I'm glad you've found it useful. It is not that much of a learning curve. WordPress does a lot of the heavy lifting for you. You need to know the basics, how functions work, loops, echo. You will get deeper in PHP as you get deeper in WordPress. So, starting out is not that hard. But if you want to master WordPress, that's a lot of PHP, MySQL, JS and React involved 😅

Hey Haris, this is hard to answer, but I'll share my experience. For me it took about 1 year or 1.5 years to get really familiar and be comfortable building WordPress websites with custom CSS and all the advanced custom WordPress stuff, like Custom Post Types, custom fields and so on. So, I would say that it takes 1-2 years to become comfortable with working full-stack with WordPress, and then it always gets better

While you can use Javascript to write WordPress plugins, you still need to write PHP. WordPress is written in PHP and that is the language you need to use in order to set up the plugin

Hey 👋 Actually, yes. (Almost) everything in WordPress is based on CRUD. When you create a new page, or a new blog post, or a new custom post type you are basically making CRUD operations. Hope this answers your question

Hey Jonathon, One tip I can give you is to not rely on tutorials. You may start there, but after that you should start building more complex projects or adding features to the projects from the tutorials. This will help you learn a lot better and will help you explain your project better when you are interviewed.
