FAQ: a lot of people are asking why I said Germany “were” eliminated, and not “was” As a non-native, something you will eventually come to learn is that spoken English has many different rules to the written style of English you will learn from your teachers in school. It’s much more frequent to say “were” in this context nowadays. We tend to “break the rules” when we speak. However, the rules aren’t really being broken at the same time. We are referring to Germany with relation to the TEAM, not just the country alone. Please don’t ask this question again 😂

I've noticed that but I've got the meaning by the context so it was easy to understand that it was about the whole team.

Anecdote: People in Brazil had a problem Many things aren't pronounced like they are spelled If a word ends in 't' syllable, then the past tense is 'tid' syllable - Want - Eliminate /t/ or /p/ sound - Laugh --> Laughed /ft/ - Hope --> /pt/ /n/ ends in /nd/ - Cleaned - Planned

Well I am from India and our country was a colony of British from 16th century to 1947 and so Lord Macualy started english education. So, nowadays we have a thinking in our country that the one who cannot speak British English, cannot do anything in our life. But our official language is Hindi which is pronounced the same as it is spelt. And so I thought that the British English is the same until my english teacher told me that 'car' is not pronounced as 'car' but 'ca'.

This was very useful, thanks Elliott! May I ask you, how do I know when at the end of a word I should pronunce the "esess" sound, like in James's? I get so confused about that. Thank you for your help, I have been traveling across England last year, what a lovely places you do have there. The weather sucks (I am Italian 😅), but everything else is adorable.
@katydoolan85144 жыл бұрын
it kind of sounds like a 'z' sound like 'James is', and when writing names that end with s you can often just write "James'", and you could say it like that too to make the sentence flow better e. g. "James' cat"
