I watched thousands of hours of Alton and his show style really had this almost rapid fire straight to the point food knowledge bombs broken in between some playful/sarcastic dialogue. I was at a fancy wine bar and I was trying to describe what I liked in wine. This poor woman, a real professional, just stood there and politely watched me make mouth sounds at her. She then came back with a sample of Sauvignon Blanc, which had EXACTLY the flavor I was describing, and told me the word I was looking for is "crisp". Now I'm not scared to try new wine because I know what to look for on the bottle. That woman changed my life. lol

The verb is "To Cloy". It cloys, it cloyed, it's cloying, etc. Examples might be "The pungent stench cloyed at his nostrils"; or "Jesus this cupcake is cloying"; or "Their romantic story was cloying".

Also the camera work on this esp at 2:10 (the subtle zoom out and shift of the camera to indicate a different "paragraph" of the video if you will). You make me want to be a better writer. Secondary notes of cigar box and forest floor add dimension."

Sour/bitter are specific types of astringent flavours. Tannic isn't necessarily either, depends what else is mixed in. I guess it's because tannins evaporate and you actually use your nose to detect them more than straight bitters and acids. You can go lick some bark to get a really good idea of what tannins taste like on their own! Quinine is also an astringent flavour without being really sour or bitter, and it comes from a bark, go figure.

@Harry-ju8yw
@Harry-ju8yw 4 жыл бұрын
Jane Pappas Agreed it’s often misused. However in the context of food marketing unctuous often serves as a stand in for umami, which, contrary to a buncha comments around here, is a real (and glorious) sensation that all great cooks (and many food scientists) seek to create in their food. But for real Shaq knows that already.

I just looked into this and you are definitely right. EVERY brand they recommend has an extremely similar website, right down to the appearance of the age check at the start. They all have 2 to 4 "products" that are all forever sold out (and probably don't even show the one you would receive from brightcellar). No hate on Shaquille for the sponsorship hustle but I wouldn't buy from them.
