With the second one, you could actually phrase it something like "You need to fit ten of these six words into this 4x4 grid," since each horizontal word is also a vertical word.

Anders Öhlund you misunderstood what I said, I wasn't talking about the game itself (where the rule is to take the number of letters in the word) I was responding to the clam that 4 is the only number with the property that it has the same number of letters as its value, and yes if you only consider the word representing the number that is correct (that's why I said "PS I know what you mean) I meant if extend it to include statements about numbers there are more numbers with the property of number of letters equals value, 28 is the only two digit perfect number (I didn't mean you could use that in the game)

The second one was ridiculously easy. DAFT and LEAF are the only two with an F, so DAFT obviously has to be on an edge and LEAF just fits into that. From there, you just fill in the blanks. The only "trick" is that DEED and BRAT are diagonal, but I didn't even worry about that while doing it, it just did itself. I didn't even worry about spelling things twice, either, that just happened on its own. It must have been infinitely harder to make than to solve.

The first one snapped into my head quickly, not sure why. Maybe the title, or maybe that I'd seen something like it before. Or it could be Genius. Yeah, that's probably it. The second one had me thinking there was a real trick, because I quickly worked out that there wasn't a way to put those words in the grid uniquely. (Plus, you gave us only six words, where I should have expected eight.) For instance, only LEAF and DAFT have an F, so the only place to put LEAF is in the third row (could choose column instead, but it doesn't change anything)and then DAFT has to go in the last column. The only weird ending in A is AREA so that had to go in:/ the second row now. And that means... We're screwed for the rest of the columns. Where did we go wrong? We didn't, of course. Genius, remember? We CAN put words in the other columns... But we have to start reusing them. Then it becomes apparent that we have a symmetric grid of BALD, AREA, LEAF, DAFT. and the remaining words magically appear in the diagonals, which answers the question of where the "trick" is. Nice try, Brushwood. Nice try.

Before watching the hint, my guess for the first puzzle is, you count how many letters are in the first number mentioned, then you count the number of letters in each following numbers until you get to 4, the cosmic number. The second puzzle is... "BALD" "AREA" "LEAF" "DAFT" with BRAT and DEED shown as diagonals. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

I actually solved the word grid - this very easy and there is also another hint that makes it (at least for me) even more easy... Seeing the letter F coming up only twice - in leaF and daFt - I figured - let's just put daft in the bottom row and then leaf vertically downwards in the third column of the grid (that's the only way to use the F, is it). In that case - you have a T in the bottom right corner of the grid and the only word ending in a t is brat - so it must go diagonally as it also turned out in your hint! And likewise - if you set brat in the top row - you'll end up having the same thing, only brat goes diagonally from left to right though the other diagonal of the grid (basically the same as if you rotated the grid 90 deg. counterclockwise).
@Tahlorn
@Tahlorn 9 жыл бұрын
The second one; If you see the word "DEED", it has a 'D' at the end and beginning. "DAFT" has to connect to one side, "BALD" to the other, as there are no more 'D' words left. This means "DEED" has to be on a diagonal. Try the top left corner down, words don't fit. But up from bottom left and it works great!
@krotenschemel8558
@krotenschemel8558 9 жыл бұрын
I think the Word puzzle was preatty easy. Upon first glance, you see the Word DEED has two letters E following each other, while all other words, save for BRAT have Es in second or third position. This is information enough to know that DEEP has to go diagonal. Now BRAT is the only word without E in it, so it has to avoid the Es in the middle, which is only possible by making it also diagonal.

I read an interesting version of this one in a puzzle book. A guy is spying on a secret society with an outside guard. One member approaches the guard, who says "twelve". The member says "six" and the guard lets him in. A while later, another member approaches the guard, who says "six". The member says "three" and the guard lets him in. The spy thinks he's figured out the code and approaches the guard himself. The guard says "eight" and the spy replies with "four". The guard throws him out. The hint they gave was also interesting: It works in other languages. The answer to "otto" would be "quattro" and the answer to "sechzehn" would be "acht". Also fun fact: I originally thought I found a DIFFERENT answer to the word puzzle by spelling things backwards instead of using diagonals but then I realized that I had "blad" instead of "bald". Whoops.

Pausing at 1:35 to say... This one is easy for me, personally. It's a function f(n) = {number of letters in the verbal name of n}. I recognized it immediately because I did a lot of work in this particular subject last year. I'll provide some of the most interesting things I found... First, I tried to find the smallest nonnegative integers that can be recursively put through the function f(n) j times before repeating, for j = 1, 2, 3, ... . In other words, 10 -> 3 -> 5 -> 4, and then gets stuck at 4, so 10 can be put through the function f(n) 3 times before repeating. So what I found is, the smallest nonnegative integers that goes through EXACTLY j times before repeating are as follows... j=0: 4 j=1: 5 j=2: 3 j=3: 1 j=4: 11 j=5: 23 j=6: 323 j=7: 1,103,323,373,373,373,373,373,373,373,373 So the 7th entry is one nonillion, one hundred three octillion, three hundred twenty-three septillion, three hundred seventy-three sextillion, three hundred seventy-three quintillion, three hundred seventy-three quadrillion, three hundred seventy-three trillion, three hundred seventy-three billion, three hundred seventy-three million, three hundred seventy-three thousand, three hundred seventy-three, which has 323 letters -> three hundred twenty-three, which has 23 letters -> twenty-three, which has 11 letters -> eleven, which has 6 letters -> six, which has 3 letters -> three, which has 5 letters -> five, which has 4 letters. For j=8, I can't even begin to state what that number would be, but I can say this: If you had 1,000,000 planets, each with an equal population to Earth's, all the people on all those planets working collectively would need over 100,000 years just to say or write it. An interesting tangent that this led me on was the problem of trying to find a sentence which documents the lengths of all of its own words. I decided to go with the simple form "This sentence contains {quantity} {length}-letter word(s), {quantity} {length}-letter word(s), ... {quantity} {length}-letter word(s), and {quantity} {length}-letter word(s)." I worked out what things must be true, and eventually I came to the end where, miraculously, the final word fit right into place. It was a fucking magical moment, let me tell you. Think about it... every time you add or change a word, you're probably changing the quantity of at least one particular length, which then means that length's quantity is changed, and on and on and on... So, it seems it was fate that the pieces fell into place so perfectly. Without further ado, here is the sentence: "This sentence contains six three-letter words, three four-letter words, nine five-letter words, two eight-letter words, one nine-letter word, three ten-letter words, two eleven-letter words, and two twelve-letter words." (Note: A hyphenated word is a single word.)

Spoilers, Observations and Compliments for Brian's hair below! Hi Brian, while I was doing the words puzzle, I realized that the middle of all of the six words had E's in the middle 2 columns. This led me to realize that the middle of the words, RE (From Area), EA (From Leaf), EE (From Deed), and RA (From Brat), meant that the two E's were diagonal to each other. In addition, RE, EA, and RA led me to believe that the two E's were in the corner of the 2x2 in the middle since that E is in the end of RE and in the beginning of EA. I then concluded that RA, diagonal to each other (inferred from the explanation above) was part of the word BRAT. Then, the word DEED was easy to see with the diagonal E's. That's basically my logical way of doing it, and by the way, Brian's hair is cool.

Those examples were not enough.I guess another solution - needed what was wrought. Otherwise, I was thinking letter count is obvious or (a single digit multiple of 4) 1+3 = 4, 3+5 = 8, 9+4 = 13 => 1+3 = 4, 10 =>1 + 0 = 1 + 3 = 4, 20 => 2 + 6 = 8. It's not perfect, but possible from the numbers unless the sequence from 8 - 5 - 4 is given our something else like 13. I know i know it's dumb, but it's possible. Again for the letter one - you need to tell they can't be upside down. Or else: BALD DEED BRAT DAFT Had area in the 2nd column upside down and least in the third column. Just saying... :)

Second one, realy esay with last and first word. So deed is followed by dlab (blad) follow by brat follow by (tafd) and deed again. Only left area and left wich e in 2nd and 3rd postion, looks like deed in a diagonal, so then you put dlab (blad) on a line or column, brat can only go in a diagonal, then tfad(daft) joins in a column or a line with deed and you just fill area and the oposite column or line of daft with whatever you like.

Paused at 2:16 the answer has to be the number of letters in the word of each number correct? 7-5-4 for example seven has five letters five has four let’s four is the cosmic number ... I haven’t been so happy to solve a scam nation puzzle since Peddles around the rose 😂

I think it's the number of letters that determines the next number

I think I got it before he gave the hint it's the number of letters in the number TEN goes to THREE which goes to FIVE which goes to FOUR and that's why Brian said NINE goes straight to FOUR which also only has FOUR letters so would go 4,4,4,4,... To the end of the universe IE "the cosmic number"

Twenty is a multiple of four though, I don't know where that would get him to six, but what he said was not incorrect.

The cosmic number took me like 20 seconds to solve... The word one is tricky though because you need to use the same word twice, which really threw me off.
