I love how minimum wage increases have to be phased in to not "burden employers," but rents are allowed to double or triple overnight with zero regard for the burden on tenants.

You know, that's bullshit!! Mexicans can't come to the US because of immigration crap but Americans can buy the houses and apartments in Mexico to then turn around and overcharge actual people born in Mexico to live in their own country. Airbnbs are preventing folks from having a place to live. I think with homelessness in full bloom and winter around the corner, 89% of travel hotels and motels as well as airbnbs should be used to house people temporarily for very low income while being subsidized by the top 1% taxes that they never have to pay. It's sickening that these apts and rooms stay empty while single mothers with babies and disabled folks and veterans sleep in the streets in the cold😞

@@Summerdaze365 i think she’s saying how difficult is for Mexicans to emigrate legally to the US, not even that but also getting a Visa to visit is insanely complicated, my girlfriend is a college educated worker for a university that needed to go on a 2 week trip to complete an agreement for her university as part of their mobility program, yet when she got to the Consulate she got denied without possibility for appeal or a reason to be provided, when I went to the US for a work meeting I spent 2 hours “detained” after landing because my flight itinerary looked weird to the immigration officers, it was only after they contacted my employer and went through my phone that I was granted access even though I’ve gone multiple times to the US for work before. Your experience might be seeing a bunch of us there but the reality is that is becoming increasingly difficult for us to even plan a vacation there, even though under the USMCA we should have better conditions similarly to how easy it is for Mexicans to move back and forth between here and Canada. Now add insult to injury by having all the things OP wrote and you can imagine how upsetting this all is to the average Mexican.

This happened in Liberia, West Africa between 2003 and 2006. As the 17,000-strong UN peacekeeping force moved in to keep the peace, many residents found themselves getting evicted as their $150/month apartments rose in price to $1,250 and, in some cases, $1,500. What landlord could resist this windfall?

Americans live there and work here and get cheap everything, rent a cheap room to live in, and some rent out more than one and post them up on Airbnb, scamming the locals from those opportunities. They are taking advantage of lower cost and not stimulating, just grabbing. People migrate to the US; you bet they work their asses off for anything they want. When Texas was still a part of New Spain the Spaniards allowed Americans to move there to populate the land on the condition that they would not try to rebel and take their land by force the way the Spaniards did to the natives. That worked out real well. There were ads placed in New York newspapers inviting Americans to "Come to Texas" for the purpose of populating the area with Americans who conveniently forgot about their promise not to rebel. When Mexico became it's own country after defeating the Spaniards they inherited the problem leading to the war with Mexico in the 1840's which Abraham Lincoln decried as nothing more than a land grab which it was. Lincoln also said "We took the wrong half" because much of the southern/south western states were a desert. Maybe all of the new "expats" are simply fulfilling Lincoln's thoughts. The cheaper rents, food, healthcare and other benefits are not free. They come at the expense of the local citizens who are, in effect, being colonized once again. If you don't believe this think India during the British heyday.
@decuy

This is very accurate. I would only add that New Spain is just another name for Mexico. We were the same country we just changed name and government. Also, while it's true that a great portion of the lands taken were mostly dessert, they have been invaluable to the USA through different periods of time in natural resources from the gold rush in California to the oil fields in Texas and gulf of Mexico.

*People complaining about too many Mexicans in USA and so, they forget completely about the fact that the land they're stepping on from California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Texas, Colorado, New Mexico (ever wonder why is called New Mexico?, Yeah no! we didn't copy that name to that state, even that was also taken away!) Wyoming, Kansas, to Oklahoma were taken away by... (Drumroll...) the US in a very unfair treaty that obviously benefited back then the young "America", if ever wonder why there are so many Latin (no to say Mexican) names spread all over the USA, is because Mexicans remained there since the moment the land changed its border and many Mexicans despite the change of owner; they never left, the treaty Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed in benefit of USA so don't come saying that "oh Mexicans are invaders" and stuff; and in the other hand the First Nations in the USA were displaced first from their centuries owned lands and animals and races were driven to extinction (many tribes disappeared forever!) in the process of modernizing "the wild west" (wouldn't you defend your home and lands from strangers with God knows what intentions? that's all what they did, they defended their land from invaders and lost everything in that course of action) and then even from those "generous" reserves that were given they also they were restricted and conditioned, so not sure why many "americans" complaint about people from other parts of the world are living in the US when the reality is that they never owned anything by rightful ownership, it was retained, taken, possessed by unlawful means and ways, many of those treaties and agreements were never honoured, so trying to make a point out of: "you Mexicans... blah blah blah"doesn't make any sense at all, at the end I guess you can always make it right, just take yourself and everyone back to your "Mayflower" and get back where you came from, at the end, all the USA nationals came from somewhere else, your family names ARE NOT Blackfoot, Deerfoot, Arrow, Blackrock, Thunderhawk, Shanta, Doses, Chatto, Deere, Bravebird etc, many are ungrateful as it has been seen over and over here and there☹️*

It's not like we don't like foreigners, but most of them are thoughtless in their approach. As a Mexico City native, here's some solutions. -Don't feed the AirBnB industry. Rent regular apartments. Please don't accept high prices, check what the regular rate is. As we say, 'que no te vean la cara de turista'; 'don't let yourself be taken for a (clueless) tourist' -Consider other neighborhoods. I assure you all of west Mexico City is as nice or nicer than Roma and Condesa. -Support local business. -Make the effort to learn spanish and the costumes. It's not China, it's not that hard. We're all westerners, we're not so different. Nothing annoys Mexicans more than people like Mr Erik Rodriguez. Be welcome. Give a little back of what you're getting from Mexico.

He's also shared that his experiences in the American workforce would allow him to start his own business in Vietnam with that same money, if he so desired. Honestly, the only thing I suspect has held him back have been my siblings and I. While we're all adults, we still find ourselves falling back on him on occasion for some form of support (minor or major, material or immaterial). I think Americans overly focus on what’s different about Mexicans/immigrant cultures that they don’t truly understand what it’s like to raise an immigrant family. I don’t expect an American to move to Germany and lose their entire American identity in exchange for a German one. They will combine both cultures. That’s been the way of the world since the Dawn of time. I’m of Mexican background and grew up with Eastern European migrant children, as well as Asian and SE Asian kids (in NY). The experience is universal. We grow up with a lot of our parents culture but inevitably develop a strong American identity as well. Some of us even feel guilt at not being “enough” of what our parents are and yet never considered American either. In 1 generation the culture, language and customs evolve dramatically. Our parents may not all speak perfect English but they are a part of their local communities and raise American children (who can still love and honor their parents culture as well). I’m 1st generation and my siblings and I all have children who couldn’t be more American. I’ll never understand this concept of immigrants that come to pillage and never embrace American life. My father always told me to be proud to be an American and consider myself blessed. I do.

It's not, though. An actual tourist spends SIGNIFICANTLY more by staying in hotels which employ lots of people and with a tax structure that contributes at a higher rate than someone renting a place that doesn't employ anyone or in a similar manner like hotels and no tax structure that contributes at the rate hotel taxes do. Renting a place also takes a property off market for locals AND can drive up rent for remaining properties. Tourists also usually eat out at restaurants or food stands which employ large numbers of folks and choose to buy entertainment from bars, shows or other things. People renting places will eat at home more, and may opt to not go out or go to a friend's or entertain themselves at home. Tourism dollars are WAY different than just living somewhere, not to mention rent pressures and displacement.

@@youraveragebreakfastcereal5285 I'd have to disagree. Yes, tourist dollars have their come fast, spend fast, leave value, but people who come and stay bring a large sum of money from outside the Mexican economy to inside the Mexican economy even if you don't see it. There rent, their utilities, the internet, their local buying of food from groceries, and so on and so forth is all money originating from outside Mexico coming into Mexico as a positive increase to the economy. Then you have ~127.5 million Mexican citizens and ~1.1 foreigners living in Mexico. That is less than 1% and the idea that is the primary cause of changes in rent in Mexico is not realistic, because more than 99% is not being rented by foreigners.

@@MusingsFromTheJohn00 i was just there last week and actually with a colleague of mine who grew up just outside CDMX and currently lives in the city and actually just had to move to another neighborhood because of rent inflation. All the "tourists bringing dollars" you mentioned was just normal day to day, low cost activities that a resident does. Of course, no one is living in CDMX for free, the issue is % of income. Mexicans disproportionately have to spend more percentage of income to one these goods vs. foreigners bringing their US salaries. Americans can drive local rent and restaurant inflation and it's still affordable for them all while pricing locals out. It is happening and bad, my colleague knows quite a few friends who had to relocate. And stimulating the economy? Maybe paying a landlord, but what paying for their Telcel service and shopping at Soriana or Walmart isn't doing much to help out. If they're even doing that - with modern cell plans people probably aren't even getting local numbers. As for the ratio you listed, it isn't a national issue. This is an issue specifically in neighborhoods in Mexico city. Not sure of the numbers in the neighborhoods in question, but notable spots are probably the Roma area, condesa, and the zone immediately surrounding Chapultepec to the east and NE - it's NOT that much of Mexico city.

@@youraveragebreakfastcereal5285, sounds like typical Xenophobia to me. Most expats going to live in Mexico are retired with an average income of $52,000 USD and they consist of 1% of the population. The top 10% of Mexicans make at least $100,000 USD. Now, tourists will definitively drive up prices in tourist areas, but they bring in $25 billion USD to Mexico. Expats bring in another at least $32 billion USD to Mexico. Sure, the average expat is maybe up in the top 20% of the income of Mexicans, but that means 20 times their numbers in Mexicans are driving up prices more than the expats are... but you are not concerned about them, and their money originates inside Mexico, whereas the expats money is coming from outside Mexico into the Mexican economy. So, yeah, you go to an area where expats are concentrated and they will drive that area up to around the top 20% of Mexicans, but 20 times that area is being driven up in price by the top 20% of Mexicans.
