Half true & useful information. I worked for 10 years on cruise ships, and even if it’s crazy hard and demanding most of the times, I would do it again, but not for so long. If you get to work on a very good company with high standards and professional crew, you will get such an amount of knowledge, training and how to manage difficult situations like in no other place on land. You get disciplined, organized, you learn how to respect rules, what really standards mean and so on. I like to say cruise ship industry is the army of the hospitality, and not in a bad way. Important to mention for the young generations (20 to 30 years old): half of them starting a job in this industry are not going to resist more than a season, 25% will force themselves because of the money and the other 25% will love it, push the limits and go high. And when you go high the big $ are coming as well. And this is a statistic of what I see in the last 5 years. As about the timing between the interview and embarkation... if it takes up to 1 year, you did something wrong among the process or you are coming from a country that just has bad bureaucracy. Congrats for the interesting content, and good luck to the ones willing to give it a chance!!!

Mehmet Alexandru wow great input thanks a lot! What Cruise Line Company did you work for? And I also thought 8 months was a bit too long to get papers together. 🙏
@mehmetalexandru50275 жыл бұрын
Hello Vlad! My first company was Carnival Cruises. Easy interview I would say, and after getting the positive answer (5 days) it took 2 moths and I was onboard . After 2 contracts as bartender on Carnival, I applied for Disney Cruises. But it was already just about formalities. Again easy going interview and even easier process to get on board as I already had the IMO and C1D. In any case, I end up refusing the contract and got to the river cruises industry in Europe for the next 7 years. Most of this period I was working for Scenic Cruises. And this came with the high standards, trainings and the 5 stars services that I was looking for (at least it was like this years ago, went lower with the time). First got the job as Bartender, after 1.5 months was promoted to Butler. For the next season I fixed the goal to be Maître d’, so the next season I was 3 moths Waiter and Head Waiter and the other 7 months Senior Butler. For the coming 2 seasons I was Maître d’, followed by other 2 as Hotel Manager. From there I refused the offer for Senior Hotel Manager as it was not exactly a job on my taste and went for Senior Butler and Quality Control. Fro the last year I went back to the ocean on Scenic Eclipse, a marvelous concept. As a fun fact, at a certain moment I got the invitation for an interview for Viking Cruises for the position of Assistant Restaurant Manager. I took the challenge out of curiosity, and it proved to be the hardest interview of my life. Literally almost to hours of various questions and practice test, checking in a perfect way the knowledge and the way of managing difficult situations and all combined with deep interest about private life habits. I end up the interview with a offer for Restaurant Manager position and the request to embark within a week. Any way, I declined the offer, but I still, appreciate the professionalism of holding an interview of the Viking’s HR. At the beginning most of the times you take what it comes, job wise, salary wise etc. with time you learn to negotiate, make your wishes clear and fight for them. It’s not easy, but you have to do it in order to get the best benefits. Money wise, the salary grows with the years and of course, promotions. Tip wise, the best was as Butler. Overall, comparing with the crazy amount of work and requirements, at times you will have the feeling that your income it’s a bit to law. As I previously mentioned, it’s freaking hard but can be fun in the same time. Working for months without a day off, long hours (11-14 / day as waiter, a bit less as bartender but even more as butler) can be demanding. I still encourage youngsters to go for it and learn as much as possible, get disciplined and make some money, but not for more than 5 years. In my last 4 years on the ships I end up to be an work obsessed maniac, fact that started to affect my private life as well. I will always be grateful for all the experiences I had in this 10 years. Atm I am a happy Restaurant Manager for a cozy resort in Lapland (where life and time has a total different meaning) with the goal to move for good in the next 2 years down by the Mediterranean sea, most probably active in the hospitality industry until retirement 😁. Good luck in whatever you’ll do in the future, and hope the info will help you a bit for a better overview of life on board.

is actually more deep to discuss. Also, money can be much higher, depending on the company and itinerary. In my opinion, is a nice experience, where you can grow a lot, and try to focus on your job. People will abuse of your skills if you are professional and committed. But as I said if you keep cool and cold mind you will really enjoy it, is a lot of work, but a lot of fun! Would like to share my experience if you need to, and happier to see you as a guest on one of those cruises. Even giving training!! nice video!!

About the tips. On RCL and Carnival. The passengers pay them before their cruise starts. About $15 per person per day (from 6 years up). So a family of 4 in a state room pays $60 a day tips. That's $420 you pay on top of your cruise before you sail. This is shared to the crew every 2 weeks when they get paid.

I came back home when he was already 6 months old. It was super hard mentally. If you really appreciate your family, you would hate working on ship although it is pretty fun.
