I don't mean to be negative here, but I had to leave the medical transcription field over 4 years ago due to lack of work, voice recognition, outsourcing, etc. Literally overnight, my income was cut in half or more. It pays pennies now. Many MTs lost their homes and are still struggling. From what I am seeing, I would only suggest transcription as a second income for extra money only.

Hey thanks for the video. I've been researching these types of jobs in order to get out of the part time job I have at a dept store. I work full time in an office but there's always more bills right? I have experience as a legal assistant in a former job and I have worked for a government ministry specializing in health related documents so I have no issues with that type of correspondence. How do you prove your work experience in order to get those gigs through sites like Rev.com etc?

Hi, Nik. Most sites will have you upload a resume. With some, you may need to go through a testing process - ex. typing speed, grammar, transcription, etc. depending on the type of work.

I am 56 and have been working online for an educational company for three years. I like it but I would like to work another job to make more money. I wouldn't mind proofreading or something along those lines. I just seem to have a hard time getting hired.

Do u have to have high speed internet. I'm really having trouble getting it out where I live. Also I have associate degree in nursing, but I need to be home for some years

Hi, Lasandra. It really depends on the type of job you are looking for. Customer service jobs, for example, usually require high-speed internet to ensure you are not dropping calls with customers. With freelance writing, on the other hand, it isn't much of an issue as long you have enough bandwidth to upload and download files. Hi Angie! I just want to say that I am enjoying watching your videos. They are very informative. I am currently looking for a work at home opportunity that offers benefits such as medical, dental, vision, and retirement but I don't want to do customer service over the phone because I am not good with dealing with people who are rude and I can not provide a quiet space because of my dog who barks at everything that he hears or sees. I am hoping that maybe you can help me out with this. I would like to have something where I am typing. I love to type and I feel like it would be a great fit for me, however, I have tried signing up for rev and transcribe me but I did not pass their assessment tests. I was so sure I would pass the tests as I corrected all of the grammar and punctuations using Microsoft Word however I still didn't do well, but they don't have benefits so I really just wasted my time. I am currently a full-time substitute school bus driver but with all that is going on with COVID-19, I am not sure where my job stands at the moment. I am also currently enrolled in an online medical transcribing course through Ashworth College and I am hoping after I get finished with my course I can find a medical transcribing job from home but in the meantime, I really need something I can do until I get this course over with. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Hi Angie, this is my third try, trying to reach out to you. My name is Renee, I am a psychotherapist a holistic practitioner and I am also disability advocate working with the disability community. Specifically, I am totally blind and I’m on a lot of Facebook groups we’re blind people and visually impaired people talk about jobs and how it’s difficult to maintain a job or to even get a job although lots of us are educated and skilled and have had rehabilitation training, would you be willing to talk to me about jobs that people can do for help from home with visual impairments that used to have to use screen readers for the blind or have to use magnification, there’s a lot of people out there that really need to be reached and I think this is a very important topic considering that many of us are under employed or on or unemployed and many of us have many years of college education or skill building or skilled training which is been provided to us by the rehabilitation system, would love to discuss the possibilities, and would love to get some feedback. Renee, check out National Industries for the Blind (NIB). The entire mission of the organization is to create employment opportunities for people who are blind and visually impaired. NIB has associated nonprofit agencies all over the country and Puerto Rico that hire people who are legally blind or completely blind. The jobs range from various forms of manufacturing, customer service, information assurance and contract close-out for the federal government. All of the jobs are based on federal government contracts. The website is www.nib.org. They will have a listing of open positions from agencies across the country. Also check out the career pages for NFB - National Federation of the Blind and AFB - American Foundation for the Blind. FYI - it doesn't matter what your level of work experience - blue collar or former CEO, their is likely a position in the network of agencies for you. The CEOs and management of many of the associated agencies are blind or visually impaired themselves. Also, almost all offer free training and or work with the state rehabilitation agencies to get you what you need, including screen reading or magnifying equipment /software. What state do you live in? We can get you connected with your local agency and you can branch out from their if they're not a fit.

Hi, Nikki. One thing to know about medical billing and coding is that many companies require 3-5 years onsite experience before allowing you to work from home. That being said, there are some schools like Career Step that work directly with companies looking for remote coders. Career Step students are sometimes able to go right to work at home because of those partnerships with several companies that hire their graduates directly. If working onsite is a no-go, no matter what, Career Step’s medical transcription and editing program may be a better fit for you as many of those graduating from their transcription program do go to work at home right away. The only schooling necessary would be if you want to go into a specialized industry like medical transcription or start a transcription business of your own. Otherwise, I would recommend trying out an entry level transcription gig to see if it's something you even like. This work can very much be learned on the job.
