Very nice job Jay. I like the improvement of replacing the steel split ring with wood. Having said that the screws that hold the ring in place are stealing the show. They need to be replaced with something not so noticeable. Great video edit and voiceover.

Looks great! When laminating the pine, I'd you take into consideration the orientation of the end grain? When I added a ramp to my porch, I made sure all the end grain was curving down. If it curled it would fight against the ramp base. If it was curves up, it would cup. I'm wondering if it would've been bette to put the two curves against each other instead of with each other. If I'm making any sense. 🤓

Nice bit of craftsmanship. I am especially fond of your humble approach- "I screwed up a little, but made it work with great results because I took the time to be precise." Taking a moment or two to reflect on your work and then make adjustments to the process shows just how good a craftsman you are. It mimics Real Life all the more, especially for those of us who often have to make adjustments to our own processes due to a lack of space, tools, and/or equipment. Also- Use of the acme-threaded scaffold jack was a great idea. I made a cheap vise a few years back using some discarded angle iron and the scissor jack from an old Toyota Tercel. Above all, creativity and knowing what you can do with your tools is important to any person who likes building things. You have mastered that approach.

thank you thank you thank you! I'm building a vise very similar and it never occurred to me to use the wooden crank arm stock to retain the head stock using that slot to hold the large retaining washer. I was thinking I had to create one on the screw itself.

I used that jointer and planer trick last weekend. 7.5 in wide piece on 6-1/4 jointer. It worked great. But if the board is very twisted, it wouldn't work. Where guard is mounted to is the same level as infeel table. After a few passes, the overhanging portion of the board is no longer hanging.

I really enjoy your channel, and this is just a wonderful & functional project. I've made a couple of mallets and gavels and found that it is easier to drill the handle hole before you turn the hub. You would want to joint the hub blank before you drill to ensure that the hole is in the center. Anyway, great project as always, Jay.

hey, Jay, I'm just curious about whether I'm missing something: I would have thought it'd be easier to drill that through hole for the handle once with a long, narrowish bit, and then use that hole to center the forstner bit on both sides. is that a good idea, or am I missing something? or is it just that you didn't have the right kind of bit to do it that way?

The purpose of the retaining ring is to pull the jaw away from the bench when the screw is backed out. The hickory is plenty strong enough for that.

It seemed like jointing the 2x10 and then planing them was double redundant. A couple pieces that are relatively straight could be planed without jointing them and I'm not sure there would've been difference.

It's difficult to tell, since your video is sped up, but slowing down the lathe when using a forstner bit (or above .25"), should stop it getting too hot. Very nice job. Good 'recovery' too...
@JayBates
@JayBates 8 жыл бұрын
Every clip in this video is at 100%. No clips are sped up. The speed of the lathe was set so as slow as I could go without the motor stalling as the bit was advanced. The main problem there was I was drilling into end grain which isn't as easy as long grain.
@davidsmart8594
@davidsmart8594 8 жыл бұрын
Jay Bates yep...end grain fibres 'twist' and grip the drill...the larger, the more 'grip'. 100%...Really? Darn, you work fast.

I would suggest *not* fixing the handle at the mid point. If you're ever trying to hold a larger, awkward piece, a fixed handle might bump into the piece. If you don't fix it, you can always slide it out of the way.
@cjmiles7
@cjmiles7 8 жыл бұрын
How come you have to use the jointer first? Can you just make a few passes with the planer to achieve the same goal?
@JayBates
@JayBates 8 жыл бұрын
No. A planer will reduce thickness. If the board has a twist it will still have a twist after the planer. A jointer makes one side flat.
@SgtElev3n

good job, but I don't particularly like the idea of screwing the handle in place in the middle. I feel like it would be in the way if it gets locked in the vertical position.
@johnreed5015
@johnreed5015 8 жыл бұрын
Me too. I have worked with many types of vises over the years and the handle always drops out of the way. What ever works best for who ever is using it. Worst case scenario, take the screw out. Great job as always, looks great. Sean will love it, I'm sure.
@JayBates
@JayBates 8 жыл бұрын
My leg vise handle was not pinned for the first month or two of use. Once I pinned it the ease of use and accessibility has increased. You never have to reach down below the center axis of the screw anymore as no matter what the lowest point for the handle will be horizontal with the screw. Most often the handle is near the top and more convenient. The handle is never in the way as it is sized so that at 12 o'clock the top of the handle is 1/2" below the work surface. If at that point it is in the way just advance it 1/8 of a turn and it's out of the way. I'll never go back to using a leg vise handle that isn't pinned like this. Try it and I think you will agree.
