I think that would be a great idea for a hide-away kitchen island. Add a skirt to hide the castors, and put in a lock that raises the island off the castors to make it immobile. Kinda like the castors that lower a foot down when you lock them.

Your videos almost always cover something I have planned, but this time you covered something I already made. I built all new kitchen cabinets, and did the toe kicks the old way. I wish I had heard of the platform method sooner, because the corner was not easy to level at all! I finally just put it there, and measured the distance it needed to be raised and hand cut shims. Then pulled it out, glued shims to subfloor and put the cabinets back. It worked, but it was very backbreaking.

My first "bench", in 1998, was a pocket door (hollow, no panel, no hole) on sawhorses, which allowed sharing the "shop" with two cars. I've since built more bench space, again using modified pocket doors for the tops, but I still have that original slab, converted into a rolling assembly table (covered with discarded tools, of course). What has impressed me through the years is how flat that surface remains. "Skinning" the top with hardboard is a good idea, but I'd use double sided tape to allow replacement. I have attach-able jigs (pocket hole jig, vise, etc) mounted on hardboard bases, which allow bolting the jig base onto the table, using embeds along the perimeter where the internal door framing allows good connections. Attaching anything in the middle of the table is difficult because there isn't much there there.

What a great idea for a multi-function bench. I have a small 2 car garage down here in San Antonio. This would allow me to pull the table out when needed (without disturbing main table contents such as a vice or drill press) then replace when done in order to recapture valuable floor space. My only concern is the use of hollow door for top. I would prefer doubling up 3/4" plywood for added strength.

This is similar to what i did for my 3d printer/work desk in my bedroom. Its a desk surface inside my sliding door wardrobe (so i can all be hidden away), the 3d printer stays ontop, only taoes up about half the area, and that desk also has a drawer pull out desk below it with about 6cm if space for leaving work on it, and a power strip on it with usb power so i can do soldering and other stuff. With drawers for all my filament and tools below it. Just pull out the drawer deskp, do some projects, slide it close, slide over the wardrobe doors and you dont even know its there. Only problem is the other half of the room is full of stuff and the room looks like a mess until i can finish building the compuer desk half of the loft bed and desk combo. Fitting things underneath other things and making better use of space is so cool 😎
@Wythaneye

I love the idea, but how do you go about keeping the surface clean and free of clutter? Any time I try to build collapsing/hide-able type shelves, "stuff" creeps on it and it never goes back into hiding.

Hey Mrs.GoodWood!!! Ok so I got swept away in the rapids of the River. I don’t know what else to say now. Well I’m trying to become a bus operator for the CTA, just saw a segment of you doing steps in Chicago on Amazon Prime. I would have dropped in on you if I knew you were here!!! Anyway, I’m not sure if I’ll be successful in landing the CTA gig SO, remembering that I told you I’d get to your shop if you were willing to train me for working there. I want to make good on that if the CTA thing doesn’t work out, though I’m going to do my best to make it happen. Not sure how anything I say will be received but so please forgive me if I’ve caused offense. I’m still in awe of the way you do you!!! So all I ask is that you keep the possibility of helping me work with/for you, ok? Thank you, got to go now, Riv’s calling me

I bought your plans and about half way done. Couple points from your plans. Your cut sheet doesn’t over size the hardboard even though your instructions call it out. So if like me if you follow cut sheet you are too late. Also the picture shows building outer cabinet with bottom between two outer walls if you do that the pedestals based end up too small by 1/2 inch. Again didn’t find out until too late so it bugs me but going to live with pedestals too small but worry now is the outer pedestals now going to be short by 3/4 if that was intent and picture was wrong. Anyway maybe double check plans for this inconsistency. Otherwise think it’s a cool design and fingers crossed it all fits when done
