Used to own one as a student when I couldn't afford H&S. Did the job, only major problem was the maintenance, the nozzle broke in 2 when I tried to remove it for the nth time.

An easy & quick way to improve cheap air brushes is to polish the needle with metal polish, being very careful not to stick in in your hand / fingers, whilst doing so.
@workbenchhobbies4316Күн бұрын
Thanks Andy. Never done that myself. What is the result of doing that? 🤔
@andy530iКүн бұрын
@@workbenchhobbies4316 You will get smoother paint flow, more notably at very low pressures. I use a small piece of stiff card with some paint cutting compound on it , & place the needle on a good flat surface, & always pushing the card away from my self & towards the sharp point, & rotating the needle as you do so to stop flat points on the needle .

Top notch again mate. When I first started airbrushing models I watched a tutorial by an airbrush artist (phenomenal work he did BTW) and his opinion was the airbrush did not have to be expensive as long as you were using quality paints.

@workbenchhobbies4316 I taught air brush to artists in the 70s. Mainly for fine art and advertising. You could go the whole hog and get a paache turbo which someone said could put the eyes in a 1,35th soldier. DONT they are the most temperamental bits of tech you can buy. You,ll end up throwing it across the room. It,s been likened to patting your head while rubbing your stomach.Haha. iwata are the best double action and bullet proof. Hey Clinton, I bought that exact airbrush as my first airbrush, I still use it now for priming or single colour applications. Still works great. Think I’ve had it about 8years. I now have a H&S infinity for more intricate work. The critical element though is your paint and mixing ratio and air pressure and you eluded to this. One thing I have bought is a mac valve which can be a game changer especially when doing camo. Keep up the great work 👏👏👏👍

I have been using a very cheap set I bought on Amazon for $15 US. It has a quiet electric compressor, a single action airbrush. It works great. I am still on a learning curve with some of the paint I have been using. I was using cheap craft paint like deco art, folk art, or apple barn. Every bottle mixes differently. But, I am slowly switching over to mission models' paint. That is so much easier, lays so much better.

I’m using a cheap airbrush and compressor set, first time user after 40 odd years in and out of the hobby. In 1/72, it does a pretty good job with thinned Tamiya paints… around 60/40 thinner/paint mostly… detailed camo has been a challenge, I’m learning more each time I use it and becoming settled with what works for me at scale… Great vid, thanks. Another great video and a really interesting topic. As a beginner airbrush user about a year ago, i purchased a cheap fengda airbrush. It did help me learn the basics of technique and cleaning, but i struggled to achieve any consistency. I then receved a creos ps289 and it instantly improved my results. For me, it felt like i had been fighting the airbrush but the ps289 allowed me to almost 'forget' about the airbrush and the whole process become a lot more intuitive. In particular, the trigger control and consistency were a big improvement. I think there are pros and cons to either side of this discussion, but as a beginner my advice to other beginners would be to spend a bit more and get something like the ps289, a sparmax max 3 or H&S ultra. Learning airbrushing can be hard and a really cheap airbrush runs the risk of poor quality which will potentially make learning more difficult. I appreciate others may have different views and experiences, but i wanted to share my thoughts based on my experience. Thanks again for the great video.

I agree with this guy. I own about a dozen airbrushes several are very expensive and several are the cheapest available. A few of the cheap ones perform really well. It seems at least to me replacing the needles in the cheap airbrushes with known high end brands improves performance. Keeping any airbrush clean, using the right air pressure for the task at hand, properly thinning the paint and practice are some of the keys to success. Most airbrush problems are more linked to the operator rather than the tool.
@workbenchhobbies43166 күн бұрын

Nice work !!Ah the venerable BD-130 (made by Fengda) and a copy of the 1980`s Iwata HP-C. I have four of these 0.2, 0.3, 0.5. I use them for trying new acrylic and lacquer paints, on expensive kit built loco`s. I strip them down, polish the needle, re-set the needle packing seal (ptfe) and replace the rubber nozzle seal with a thin strip of ptfe tape wound round the front end of the nozzle thread which makes this cheap airbrush solvent resistant. They atomize paint and have a precise trigger response as good and often better than my expensive Iwata and H&S. They will last as long as you want them to. But beware , as there are cheaper knock offs of these already cheap knock offs.......

One airbrush is an old Badger single action knock off. all plastic and very cheap but it was what I used in the mid to late 70s. and here it was being used again. The other two are standard style one with a large cup and one with a small cup. The larger cup has a cover. I've used the smaller one and had no issues with it at all. Works fine. Cleans easy. I never went cheap when I started airbrushing a year ago when I rediscovered model building as a hobby: Iwata HP-CS, Iwata Neo and finally a H&S Evolution 2024. But I still struggle with small scale painting at very close distances (to get the fine lines on 1:48 models), having quite some problems getting a consistent paint flow, despite thinning. Maybe the problems are exacerbated by using acrylics exclusively (Ammo Atom and yellow cap), small amounts of paint in the cup, etc. So yeah, just buying a good tool does not automatically make you a master ;-)
@workbenchhobbies43165 күн бұрын
That’s for sharing your experience. That atom paint is pretty good and can carry quite a high volume of thinner. I’d suggest you could thin it more and you may get those finer lines you are chasing. Make sure your air pressure isn’t too high (I’d be around 15psi) because if too high it can dry your paint out. Lacquers are a lot more forgiving than acrylics..,not sure if you’d considered trying those? ☝️🍻
@user-vt6en8fw4z5 күн бұрын
@@workbenchhobbies4316 I am working around 15 down to 10 psi when doing the closeup fine work. Thinning is around 1/3 to 1/2 thinner to paint. If I thin more (2/3) even at 10psi, the paint is too thin and just gets blown away... the result looks really ugly. The low psi work is why I bought the H&S in the end, the Iwata HP-CS in my case does not work reliably below 18...20psi. Lacquer is not an option as I live in a small flat, the model building area is just a table next to the (home) office area... no separate ventilated paint area 🙂 Thanks for your advice anyway.

The difference in atomization is incredible. I will never change my Iwata for anothe airbrush. Later in 2011 I bought a double compressor with the same size air depot as the one bought in 2008 which cost me less than 30€ in China (I was working by that time in China and I have that compressor in China with another Hi-line airbrush at my parents in law home). Personally I think is worth buying a good airbrush rather than a cheap one. It can be Tamiya or creos if you don’t want to spend a lot of money or cannot get an iwata for a reasonable price. The difference in the atomization of the paint is huge.

Thank you for your detailed insight and sharing your experience. Please dont think i am suggesting a cheap airbrush is the same as a premium one. It was just a demonstration that for most modellers, a budget airbrush can produce a good result it you thin your paint appropriately. Thanks again for joining in 💪🍻

Still a big fan of Tamiya, but also use AK paints

Yeah - Tamiya is hard to go past... but my new favourite is the new range of AK Real colours in the dropper bottle. Im obsessed! Great thing is they work fine mixing with the Tamiya paints I have in the stash

I've tried quite a few airbrushes at various price points but I just keep gravitating back to my UMP apex, it's a mid-priced tool, less than £100 when I bought mine, but that was a few years ago, might have changed now, I'm not sure, but I think it's the way it feels in the hand that keeps me coming back, I don't think the price of the airbrush matters at all, it's what feels comfortable to use, you can get great results with a cheap airbrush so long as you are comfortable using it. Basically all I'm saying is that the price doesn't matter so long as the ergonomics are right, somebody with bigger hands for example will probably be more comfortable with a chunkier tool

I have an $80 3 litre tank compressor that I bought back in 2014 and it's still going strong. And I've been using Ebay $20-30 airbrushes for years now, they do eventually die but I usually get 2-3 years use out of one. I lashed out with my latest airbrush and bought a Border models black flame from BNA for $79 I can't understand buying a $500 airbrush for putting model paints through, I only ever used an expensive airbrush when I did illustration stuff using inks (Iwata HP-C)

It irritates the hell out of me seeing comments on the internet along the lines of "Oh you must buy this or that airbrush or you'll never get a decent spray job!". What a load of old tosh! Just because you can afford to buy expensive equipment does not mean you suddenly become capable of using it, you are buying a product not ability. I use cheap Fengda airbrushes and I have never had an issue with them, they can do everything I have ever needed to do with them, from blasting primer on dio bases or 3 tone camo on a 1/35 BMW motorcycle, I even use one for spraying diluted PVA glue when layering static grass. Its your money and your choice, just don't believe everything that the "Must Have" lot tell you.

EXCELLENT VIDEO! I bought a set of airbrushes on Temu ( 😆 can’t believe I admitted to that lol but for $21 it’s not bad lol) and never used them. However I recently bought the tamiya Pz 2 1/35 scale and decided to be brave and do something different and did a cameo using those airbrushes and OMG! It didn’t went smooth I’ll admit (I had issues with the paint being too thick) but the little spraying that I did was enough for the effect that I wanted to achieve (nothing compared to your work for example when applying the cameos) and it was like night and day because I hand-brushed my tamiya tiger 1 cameo and when compared to the airbrushed pz2 cameo… it was clear that the pz2 is better at least for me. I had to however hand paint some of the scheme as the airbrush was just not working due to the paint being too thick but at least the main hull and the turret was done so I did that cameo on the wheel section where it will be hidden. Anywho, I’ll for sure wait for your “how-to-do” video on the airbrush as I may become a convert after 4 years of hand painting my models and probably adding cameos or not.

It's so rewarding when you finally take the plunge into airbrushing isn't it? Sounds to me like we just need to work on your thinning knowledge. Getting your head around the airbrush will level up your models faster than anything 👍💪

I've bought four or five cheapo airbrushes (new and secondhand) hoping to get a good one. They were all useless junk. My H&S Ultra is a workhorse, and my H&S Infinity is precise. I recently bought two secondhand Olympos airbrushes which I haven't tried yet; they were cheap as chips but I can't tell if the needles are genuine.

There is definitely some junk out there, but I’ve also paid $$ for some airbrushes and they’ve been shocking too! Maybe I got lucky with this one ☝️ Thanks for your comments 🍷🥇

The externals on that type brush are generic. The internals are where the high end ones are superior, O rings, packings and trigger valves. The 25 dollar brushes will work for a while quite well. I use mine for gloss and flat coats. I had a 300 dollar Harder and Steenbeck I could not get to work. Gave it to a bud of mine, same result. Ya never know.

Interesting you had challenges with the H&S - I wonder what the issue was ? I've never splurged on a tool that expensive. Maybe I should take the plunge one day ! Thanks for sharing your thoughts 🍺

airbrushing is already sexond nature to me. Only problem wirh cheap airbrushes I face are replacement parts- they have way too many O rings that deteoriate over time
@workbenchhobbies43166 күн бұрын
I’m not suggesting people should be flocking to cheap airbrushes over their more expensive counterparts. Re the replacing parts…I’d think this was cheap enough to just bin it and get a new one ☝️ Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts 🙏🍻

I refuse to pay big money for an airbrush when cheaper ones do exactly the same thing, I have cheap ones that I have had for years and have had no problems with them, even cleaning they break down and clean just like any other airbrush, It's all down to how the user uses the airbrush. Even reading some comments here people are giving the old excuse that the cheap ones are hard to clean and get dry tip. I think all it is is people going oh look I brought an expensive airbrush/s making them think they look like they are going to improve their work, when in fact all they are doing is showing off .
@workbenchhobbies43166 күн бұрын
Hey Shayne. It is interesting that people have made those arguments about cleaning and useability issues, cause I just can’t see this tool offering me any of those issues. I’m not suggesting it’s perfect, but it’s certainly good enough for most modelling projects Thanks for taking the time to connect

An airbrush is just like anything else. The cheap one will do an 80% job, which is usual fine for most people. Moving into into the $100 - $120.00 range gets you to around 90 - 95%. To get the last 5% - 10% you need to spend the big bucks. Outside professionals, no many are going to even notice that final 10%

Weathering and painting products for modellers are like cosmetics for women. They sell you a million over priced products which don't do anything you can't accomplish with some thinking and hardware store products for a tenth of the price.

A lot of the price of the expensive airbrushes is eaten up by things that aren’t critical to its function. Fit and finish, packaging, warranties, accessories. The materials the airbrush is made from will also have an impact on the price. I only have cheap airbrushes and that means that when something isn’t working correctly, I’m not worried that I have ruined something worth hundreds of dollars.

It's common knowledge that your hands is what matters the most. However, I'd much rather get an actual high-quality product I can fully rely on. Iwata and Harder are simply too convenient and gratifying to work with
@workbenchhobbies43166 күн бұрын
Yeah, I’m certainly not suggesting the quality of a cheap v expensive airbrush is remotely close. I’m hoping those modellers who feel an airbrush is out of their reach might reconsider after watching this. Appreciate you joining in. Thank you
@intensiveintensives48876 күн бұрын
True. I personally started out with a cheap iwata knock-off but bought H&S Evolution silverline pretty much right after the first build, and do not regret "jumping the gun" at all. I fully support your intent, since, as you know, there's a million mile difference between the result you get with air and hand brush which is quite critical for a newbie especially. I'd know: coming back to the hobby, I started out by painting a whole 1:35 panther by hand (with alcohol paints, mind you!). Still managed to enjoy the ordeal greatly, but an ordeal it was nonetheless.
