I remember watching some Soviet cartoons as a kid, and they really did seem as depressing and gloomy as this, which tells me someone who worked on that episode was familiar with Soviet cartoons.

Not entirely Soviet, but the Gene Deitch era of Tom and Jerry episodes (commissioned by MGM) were made behind the Iron Curtain (Prague).

Check out "Film! Film! Film!" - it's a hilarious cartoon about movie-production and you don't need knowledge of the language to enjoy it. One of my favourites from soviet era.
@manuelmanzanero50574 жыл бұрын
More than some cartoon from USSR or Eastern Europe, they look like avant-garde animation from the 40s. Even the thread ball from the last scene could bring to the memory a cheap parody of the lines and figures of Fischinger or Norman McLaren. Although some details, such as the replacement of language by gibberish, do remind us of some animated series from Eastern Europe, such as "Mihaela si Azorel"... The "depressing" part is a psychological categorization that is not in the cartoon, but in your head. You decide to interpret it as "depressing" , but the level of abstraction they have leaves little room to say anything about them.

The worker is the mouse and the parasite is the cat. It's kinda logical. The cat oppresses the mouse in a natural predator-prey relationship, that's why the cat is the mouse's boss.

I see a lot of people confused so i will explain the story for non-romanovich. The story talks about worker ( the cat) and parasite ( the mouse). Worker works hard for the sake of his country. Parasite , who is the représentation of a degenerate capitalist , want to have fun instead of working. Worker try to explain to parasite the virtue of working hard but parasite only want to have fun. As worker décide to try that life , he suddendly fall into the great void of capitalist degeneracy and discover the emptiness of the false promises. The end is open to interprétation of course. It's probable based on the essay from Nikolaï gorlachov "inut loto" wich Can be translated to " beware the ennemy of the révolution"
