Oh wow. Do you have any tips for quieting up the valve noise for the first 20 seconds of start up after it’s been off for a month or so? It seems totally common but was wondering if you got around it!

Mine does it after sitting 20 minutes with 5w30. Less with 10w40. Less pan drain down.

@@GT-mn3bx FYI Workhorse warns not to use 10w 40 in our 8.1 its ok to use 10w 30 or even better a straight 30w as long as the ambient temperature stays above 40 degrees

What is your oil pressure running? Try this trick hold down the accelerator while you crank the engine.. this will turn off the fuel injectors so the engine will not start, do this for 10 seconds wait 20 seconds the crank another 10 seconds this may pump up the lifters. Then try to start as normal and see if the noise is any better?

@@ktoutdoor Yes,, but strange enough, I saw a U-Haul back in 2009 or so with an 8.1 that had a 10W40 recommended sticker, or 15W40 HDEO with an SM rating,(highest at that time? My dash oil pressure was 40-42 hot 5w30 , 43-45 10w40. About the same difference more when cold also .

@@GT-mn3bx Maybe GM had a change of heart later? I also found this. Motor oils that have a wider range viscosity rating such a 5W-30, 5W-40 and 0W-40 are blended with more base stocks and additives. Because of this, it may be harder for these oils to remain in grade as the miles accumulate (which is why GM does NOT recommend using 10W-40 motor oil). They say it breaks down too quickly and does not stay in grade as long as 10W-30 or 5W-30. Also, an oil with a lower winter rating like 0W-20 or 5W-20 will contain a higher percentage of thinner base stock oil (which is typically a synthetic oil). This requires more viscosity improver additive to achieve the same high-temperature rating as a 10W-30, 10W-40 or straight 30- or 40-weight oil. PS: I have always ran mobile one 10w 30 I got zero lifter tick... for now.
