More oil isn't always good. There's a low and high, you don't have to be on the high side. My Yd25 takes 4.7L total but I only put 4.4L in That doesn't not affect the engine at all, and being a high flow turbo diesel, it like all diesels is subject to high crank case pressure which will increase sump pressure, and that oil pressure goes back Into the turbo and breaks the seals. It can happen, and did happen to me. I avoid this issue by using less oil.. simple. Don't always go to the H on the dipstick if you have a turbo.

Be careful with putting oil on the threads, although it will make it easier to not mess them up and strip them, it could also cause the screw to loosen up over time. I would recommend to use semi or (soft) thread locker, when you first apply it it will help with not messing up the dreads but then after you tighten it, it will seal and prevent your bolt from coming out. This has helped me out a lot in the field, thought I would mention and keep wrenching guys! 💪🏽🛠
@fourocker
@fourocker 2 жыл бұрын
I have to agree, in industry as a fitter/machinist I use Loctite hydraulic sealant to assemble pneumatic and obviously hydraulic fittings and connections , it takes away a large portion of the vibration loosening risk especially due to the heat cycles of the oil.
@devo3243
@devo3243 2 жыл бұрын
Engine oil is fine to put on bolts. Infact, many bolts are supposed to be torqued 'Wet'. Particularly a lot of head bolts, conrod bolts ect. Oil won't hurt, bolts and fittings won't come loose if they are properly torqued. However, things like anti-sieze are another story.
@fourocker
@fourocker 2 жыл бұрын
@@devo3243 no offence mate but we're not talking about bolts here, technically they are hydraulic fittings for all intents and purposes, I'm not going to suddenly change my process of over 30 years on your say so, I agree regarding head bolts etc, I have done this myself rebuilding a couple of my own engines.
@cleveland2286
@cleveland2286 2 жыл бұрын
@@fourocker This "hydraulic" system will never see the day it reaches over 80psi, not 8,000psi. Those head bolts will be receiving not only more vibration as they are directly connected to the thing making said vibration, but experience higher temperatures as they are almost directly in contact with the bore (although the coolant jacket as well). The fact that bolt and stud stretch is a factor when considering head bolt and main cap torque is enough to tell me the head bolts are undergoing greater forces pulling the head of the bolt and the piece they are threaded to apart than these aluminum AN fittings. Feel free to use whatever you want, but let's be fair here, these aren't the same thing.

A consideration not many people think about: Your OEM oil pump may not be strong enough for the additional flow needed for the oil cooler. You MAY see an oil pressure drop as a result of this kind of install. Answer is either a larger oil pump or an aftermarket electric pump. Heard of people using a scavenging pump to keep pressure up through the line (like a turbo). Truly is a YMMV thing though, not all vehicles will have an issue and even those that do, may not be worth worrying about if the pressure drop is small.

Thanks for the tip about filling the new cooler with oil before installing, you might have saved my 5.0. Just a thought for people with daily sports cars, look at where the oil cooler goes before buying/installing. In this video you can see it is very near the bottom of the car. If you pick up a rock or hit a pothole and you’re not looking at your oil pressure, you’re engine will be toast.
@QuincyStick
@QuincyStick Жыл бұрын
honestly engines can idle without oil just fine given the extremely low load on them, so I don't think it would've killed your car. Also it is important to note the mounting location prior to purchasing, however this particular one mounts higher than the subframe so if anything were to it the cooler and cause damage, you've also damaged your subframe, power steering rack and most likely your radiator too.

Every 20 deg. F drop in oil temp, effectively doubles oil life. I installed an oil cooler a Dodge Caravan four cylinder, with an electric cooling fan. It kept the engine running so cool, you could open the radiator cap at after running it in rush hour traffic and it would NOT blow up steam in your face. Not recommended but you get the point.

An oil cooler (with a thermostat) is an absolute must for any turbo applications. It's amazing how stable oil temperature stays despite the heat from turbo even on hot days. With all the small turbo engines these days, oil coolers (and transmission coolers) should be standard if one wants to keep the car for a long time.
@mr.bigrigs2059

What kind of oil cooler are you running?
@hankitytankity
@hankitytankity 10 ай бұрын
@@mr.bigrigs2059 I run a Setrab stacked cooler for the engine for larger cooling capacity and s smaller tube and fin, Hayden I think, for the automatic transmission. The engine oil cooler serves as insurance if the water cooling fails. And the transmission cooler prevents temperature spikes especially in the hot Summers.

Hey @hyojoonus ive got a 2.0 turbo diesel and was thinking of get a slightly larger radiator and intercooler in place of the stock ones. Would that provide better cooling function over an oil cooler?
@hankitytankity
@hankitytankity 10 күн бұрын
@@Ben1010Ten Yes, the larger radiator and intercooler will definitely help. However, understand that radiators cools the water that flows around the cylinder and not necessarily the oil. From my experience, cooling the oil that flows through the engine and the turbocharger using an external cooler helps to keep the engine from feeling sluggish on a hot day. Or, it could be the trans cooler. It’s especially noticeable when climbing mountain passes where oil and trans temps spike without them and the engine would otherwise have no more push. If I could do it again, I’d go plate and fin for both coolers for best cooling.

On every single VQ the very first bolt on was a thermostatic oil cooler, with the exception of my current Red Sport, keeping fluids at optimum operating temps and pressure is critical no matter the build or who makes it, imo transmission temps typically get ignored by most, I'm a believer in those as well! We had an MG B at work a year ago. There was an oil cooler in it, except for some reason it came half side braided line, half oil hose with hose clamps. After we did the engine rebuild the boss had a lap and was happy. The owner paid, drove off and must've hit some hella RPM on the freeway (twin webbers) because the basic bitch hose came off and ran him dry. Didn't take long for a second rebuilt (only needed main bearings) but we had the cooler feed system upgraded to both new braided hose.

That's right it does depend on what you have going on. My truck is a 1994 Chevy 1500 4x4. It comes from the factory with an oil cooler. The oil cooler lines fail, OFTEN. The job is a hugely messy operation so I always take it to the shop to have it done. This time I will have him delete the lines completely and plug the holes near the oil filter. I live on the coast of Oregon and don't pull a heavy trailer. This will in no way affect the life of my engine.

Although not horrible advice, The cooler will fill automatically as the t-stat in the adapter allows for approximately 10% oil flow to the cooler at all times... even when cold so it will fill up without the need to pre-fill the cooler during installation. Oil coolers with thermostatically controlled sandwich adapters are GREAT mods!

Exactly. I live in a hot climate but we do get the occasional cold snap over winter. So middle of summer, a fully open cooler probably isn't going to damage my engine but in winter, on those particularly cold days, it might not even get hot if it's a short drive - so very bad for the engine.
