I work for the school district and one of my friends is deaf and she works as an ASL teacher for high school. She went through exactly the same story. She changed to DHH teacher and she is happy with it because she loves to teach deaf students. P.S.Thank you for sharing this story on KZbin. More people need to know this. Right on.

I've been working as an ASL Deaf Teacher at a public high school with hearing students for more than 20 years and still am working. What you're saying about the triggers and the oppressions in the classroom is true. Also, the administrators often dismiss it because of the differences in the culture between Deaf and Hearing behavioral norms. Most people do not realize that there are Deaf ASL Teachers who experience a very high level of oppression in the classroom at school without a support system from the administrators due to the cultural language differences, which can lead to the result in having PTSD and depression. It could be prevented if the administrators understood the seriousness of the communication between the Deaf Teacher and the hearing students. Students often are bullies toward the Deaf Teacher.

Thank you for sharing your experience. As a Deaf person, you are the best to teach ASL. Even the most excellent hearing ASL signers cannot match you. I think you should teach the highest level ASL classes. ASL 3 or ASL 4. Most students who go that far in a subject are good students, and they will not act like the awful students in your classes. Also, I think your principal and other leadership should have had some training in how to set you up for success. Instead, you were set up for failure. I hope those students will look back later and feel sorry for how they acted.

I think people in the comments may not be aware, this story didn’t happen to the person signing. They are retelling a story of someone else to show an example. A true story, though!

JuneAnn! I think you are absolutely correct! I'm hearing! I just accepted my first ASL Job teaching ASL to middle school students. I have been really reluctant to tell people and other Deaf people that I'm teaching ASL. I know I'm not a native signer, but I love ASL. and I want to share that love with others so that the Culture will continue to grow! And others can be blessed by it! I understand when said that hearing teacher being able to control hearing classrooms better. The honeymoon is over and I'm starting to see the true colors of my students. It's a little alarming! I wish they would be a little more respectful and stop talking so much!

Why do you want to become a high school ASL teacher?

I wholeheartedly agree! I've been teaching high school ASL for 8 years now and deal with this everyday with no support from admin. I am now teaching part time at community college, once a full time opportunity to work at the community college arises, its bye bye high school. I love working with community college students.

i love love deaf teachers my first teachers when I entered this world were Deaf (my parents) but it's important that hearing people who know ASL fluently work with the Deaf teachers in the class.

Would it make a difference if there was an interpreter for each class? So that the terp can tell you what's going on, and the teacher can manage the class better and nip the mischievous makers in the bud?

She should have assigned ASL interpreters on a permanent basis. 😒

I am a high school student who, wants to start learning asl. I couldn't bear Knowing that people are taking about me, without me knowing. So beach bravo to you. I also have a quick question. My deaf friend says before he got his hearing aids, he had to sign to communicate. We often sign to each other. He says he thought in signs, so imagined the sign as your thinking, if that true? Or do you know what you sound like?

You should have a teacher assistant who can hear and sign ASL that would support you and able to control the class? Just a thought but I have never thought about Deaf experienced oppression in ASL class. That's terrible and I hope you will find the way what works out for you.

Always look for easy grade & easiest foreign Language to learn ….is that the real reason for the demand for ASL in high schools???! We got suckered… dumbed down hearies..it’s also happening to Deaf teachers and staff w/ implanted-deaf students!

Kind of awful. I think a bigger problem with foreign language education in American schools as there’s very little actual intention of the students ever mastering the language to a conversational level. The students don’t take it seriously for the most part the administrations don’t take it seriously, and most of the language teachers don’t actually take it seriously. I’m starting to learn ASL now. But I speak several foreign languages already. All of them either by self teaching or through total immersion. It’s a little bit heartbreaking. I’m really sorry for the experience of the person who live through this.
