Thanks for this session. This may be an inappropriate question to ask but still want to ask. What is the average salary of an SA in Aws in 🇺🇸. I heard AWS pays less than average market salary and there is more stress and less work/life balance. What do you say?
@WinTheCloud3 жыл бұрын
The salaries in Canada are lower than those in the US, even for the same roles, and of course the salaries change from one region to another even within the US... Let me just say this, Amazon won't cheap out on you just to keep a little bit more for Jeff, he got plenty already ;)

I like when you say "don't use certs to get knowledge, use them to validate your knowledge" it makes sense but let's take in my case I'm based in Africa especially my country we don't have alot of companies using AWS but Azure is crazy here. I'm a certified Azure, however I recently saw a vacancy out stating they need someone who is AWS certified, I contacted them and told them about my background and they told me unless I'm not AWS certified they can't really give me an interview. I Have no knowledge of AWS and now I need to get the cert just to get into the interview. You get what I'm saying and this position has been vacant for almost a year or so I understood

It would be interesting to hear what courses or certifications architects and engineers at outside companies should take to really understand the AWS architecture, services and security. Eg, we may have vendors hosted on AWS, we may be on AWS or considering it, and I at least certainly do not want to rely on AWS inside consultants. Maybe go into detail about that immersive three month intro, best place to find white papers etc.

Things that have changed since this video was made: 1) a position needs to be open to get promoted, 2) you are selling, not building, 3) RTO is driving away all the great talent, 4) you will never get rich from the stock, it's just deferred compensation.

Would you recommend AWS SA cert. to people who are new to AWS or they should have a background knowledge? Also can you tell us about some of your failures either in life or in AWS!
@WinTheCloud3 жыл бұрын
Hey Paul, good questions. So I definitely recommend SA certs to people interested in cloud and AWS, but my opinion on it (which might be unpopular) is to first get first hand knowledge, do labs, learn how to use the console and solve problems with, then get the cert. Don't approach the cert from a pure theory.. As for failures in life, well, haha I have my fair share of those, but please provide me some time to think about them, I might make a video where I share some failures, also the lessons I learned from them :)

Hi - Thank you for a fantastic insight into AWS SA perspective. One Q: ilyas (and Tony) is it possible for someone going on 60 to get a job as a SA at Amazon? Realistically?

Hi Faruk, thank you for your question - I'm not aware of any age limitation so I realistically don't see why not

Hi Acha, I can only speak about my experience: I was full time, so no time-based contract
@carlosroberto3663 жыл бұрын
iLyas, from your experience, on average how is the % or months spent during a year in new projects as well as existing ones solving issues only? for example, you get one or more new projects (workshop requirements gathering, design, etc) every year completing them in 3-6 months, during such year, you might also get assignments to solve issues from other projects or simple change requests from customers (not even sure if that exists in AWS).
@WinTheCloud3 жыл бұрын
When I worked as an SA in other companies, it would be a new project only every now and then, majority of time would be spent upgrading existing projects (from legacy to be better architected) or designing new features to go on them. At AWS, you get assigned a territory with companies in it, and every customer has of course different teams with everyone of them having their own projects that might need an upgrade, a migration, or a full re-architecture. I like to think of the SA role as the CTO of these companies: you're there to help from the technical aspect but also to help strategize, prioritize and manage projects

Noted. I actually tried to improve it in the latest video... I think it will take me a couple of more trial and error until I get there. I'm still learning so much about how to make KZbin videos (scripting, shooting, editing, lighting, shadows, audio quality....) but rest assured I'm testing many combinations to improve the sound quality (without having to buy a $1k+ setup haha)
