Tyler, love the content. I’m not far from you and have been rebuilding our working corral based off your design. We are looking at buying an electric branding iron. What size lettering did you go with?
@farmertylerranch43993 жыл бұрын
Thanks Max where are you located? I think the L on mine is 5 or 6” tall. I’ve heard people say to use a smaller iron on calves because the brand will “grow” with them but I haven’t found that to be true.
@maxmagleby37693 жыл бұрын
@@farmertylerranch4399 I’m just over the hill to the south in the Placer County area. I think the 6” one is what I’m leaning towards. Thanks for the reply. I work in a profession that I think we might run into each other. Do you have a channel email or another email to reach you at?

👍good job , looks like it went pretty smooth. How many head did you end up vaccinating? Thanks for explaining the shots!! I will do the pour on but I let the veterinarian do the shots , figure their better at guessing weight and administering what the cow/ calf needs are 👍😉
@farmertylerranch43996 жыл бұрын
Thanks BTO! Yes it did go pretty smooth. We ended up running 40 through the chute. Everyone got pour-on and the 8-way shot. Only had 5 or 6 to brand and 25 went to the winter pasture. Giving shots can certainly be intimidating at first but like anything, practice makes perfect!

how many vaccinations do cows get in their time on the ranch with you?
@farmertylerranch43995 жыл бұрын
They receive Covexin 8 (a broad vaccination that covers 8 common diseases) twice a year, every year and Breeding females get another one called Vib-Shield 5 (covers 5 reproductive diseases) once a year, every year. Thanks Rosrychaplet!

Hi Tyler, Please tolerate my ignorance as I am a newbie. Why do you brand the cattle? Is the information from the ear tag not sufficient to identify the cow to your property and is that not on some sort of national register? Thank you in anticipation.
@farmertylerranch43995 жыл бұрын
Comments are for questions so don’t feel bad! The eartags are just for my records and management so I know who is who there is no registry or anything like that. The reason why tags are not used that way is because they can fall out or get ripped off. Plus in the event your cows would get stolen the tags are very easy to remove and change. Therefore not a completely reliable way to identify animals. Branding is the best way to give them permanent identification that can be seen from a distance (most cows won’t allow a stranger to get very close!)
@starwombat5 жыл бұрын
@@farmertylerranch4399 Thank you Tyler. So are the brands registered to your property?

Can cattle build immune system to fight off disease through minerals feeding and diverse cover crop feed? Do organic farmers use drench and vaccines?
@farmertylerranch43995 жыл бұрын
I have never heard of anyone substituting injectable vaccines with minerals or particular feed. There are wormers that can be fed but that’s all that I’m aware of. I’m sorry but I probably can’t answer your questions about what organic ranchers do as I simply don’t know. The drench is definitely not allowed for organic, not sure about vaccines though.

Why not freeze brand ?
@farmertylerranch43995 жыл бұрын
Hmmm well honestly I never considered it plus I don’t know how to do it! Typically in the cow world hot brands are used to mark ownership and freeze brands are used for individual cattle identification. I’ve actually never seen a freeze brand used on cattle for ownership purposes. I have seen it on horses but never cattle. I think hot brands are just easier, plug them in and they’re ready to go. Thanks for the question sorry I don’t have a better answer for you!
@jackkilbane92095 жыл бұрын
The freeze brand is simply, it's brass or copper numbers dipped in liquid nitrogen , handy because you can put the cows ear tag on her rump , handy setup, #irishspringcalvingnosleep
@buckinthetree12335 жыл бұрын
It would take two days to freeze brand 20 cows, and in the end only half of them would take. You have to clip the hair, clean it with alchohol, and hope your iron is cold enough. It's a pain, but granted it's the easiest to read on red or black hair cattle.
