This is so entertaining to watch! I used to feel guilty going out for lunch because everyone ate at their desk, but I needed that midday break to get some fresh air and enjoy my lunch away from my work 😁 I love that about Singapore work culture. Although I think they would be frustrated because I take more than a day to reply back to my emails haha thanks for this video! Loving the twice a week🥰
@TheKrazyKoala

oh hahaha. your company is also "eating at the desk" culture LOL..... i also enjoy taking a walk outside for fresh air. TBH, now I'm getting slower on emails than before LOL.... but it's still much faster than IG or FB. I feel i'm mainly on YT lol...... The 2X a week thing is getting me very stressed... don't know how to manage it, because i want to be able to upload on Friday night because that's the most active night on YT. Not i'm not sure if i can make the deadline LOL

From my experience in Singapore, my colleagues usually don't disturb me when I am on leave, even if they do send you messages, you still have an option not to reply. It depends on the company, your position etc. This problem arises is when the company tries to get more things done with less manpower to maximize their profit detrimental to employees well being such as health and work life balance.
@TheKrazyKoala
@TheKrazyKoala 4 жыл бұрын
It is a rising problem. though i illustrated it as a comedy, it does carry some truth to it. i am in this kind of situation. i hope we can create a more of respectful and work/life balance in the future as we progress as a society. I worked for American company in Singapore for ten years, if company provide you a laptop, likely need to reply e mail after office hours. But not often. Unless you got a desktop. During vocation, we set auto reply that out of office. Whatapp have few groups, friend group about gossip, office group about work. No need reply immediately, if ugent they will call you sooner.

I am a Singaporean who has worked in Michigan for 9 yrs in my younger days and I am back in Singapore working since 2019. So I can totally relate to the differences in work culture. I definitely like the US work culture compared to the Singapore style. Communication with your manager/colleagues is different as well. (US being very direct, Singapore being indirect)

Indeed, Whatsapp is big here. In fact, it has become intrusive because people msg each other about work even after the working hour. And because it is instant messaging, they expect almost instant reply. The Out-of-Office thing depends on the manager you work with. Nice video!

Nice review, made me smile lol. I was out of the office for a while once and someone sent me an email that needed actioning very shortly; I saw that person few times out and about and they saw that I was a bit stuck and couldn’t get back to the office and that person did not say a thing to me. By the time I got back to the office the time to take the action was lay so I simply replied, ‘just got back to the office now.’ The other one was in and Architectural Practice that I used to work. My Colleague next to me send me email to ask a simple question and all he had to do was just to talk and I would have heard him. We literally sit next to each other.

Hilarious and you are absolutely spot on with the disparity with the Work ethics and culture. There isn't a right or wrong on either side. Bottomline, the task gets done. If you are a foreign staff in either country, you just got to adapt to its work culture. Of course, work environment can be improve constantly, provided the management and staffs are willing to accept paradigm shift. Yes, you should expand this subject matter, and create part 2 or even 3 series episode.

On lunch hour, it really depends on the type of industry, position and company culture you are in. On email and WhatsApp, that just because many wants to get decision or action done very fast. With regards to leave, that is again depending on the industry, company culture and position. I have known many foreign high position executives that frequently attend to matter while on leave. Your video is light hearted and nice to watch. However, as you mention Singapore, I can't help but to clarify that the comparison is only from the experience you have working in a specific environment, company size and culture dealing with a specific group of people.

When people tends to email u for some query, in the morning, they will send u 1st email for some queries. Less than few hours before lunch, they will drop 2nd email reminders in the email header, after lunch they will send 3rd email as reminder and before going home they will send a final (4th email reminder) for the queries they asked. The next day, they will start to escalate the email to your boss mentioning that they has been chasing you for updates multiple times at least 4 times. (Didn’t stated that the 4 reminder actually was in one single day), giving your boss the impression that people email u multiple times how could u not replying back to others 😅😅😅

Because all the time my body is facing my desk with work items around me and I rarely move my butt at all. I like it when my colleague has a car or when we are taking bus out for longer lunch break cuz i get to move out and it would really seem like a break to me 😊 . I believe from what you said means in America the boss will not blame on you for the job not being done if you had already sent the email to inform the other party. But here, the boss may question you: why you didn't remind the other side to read the email? Or check if the job is on process? If you answer had done the duty to send email, the boss may not happy: you means the matter does not related to you any more once you sent the email? Another reason: here, WhatsApp also consider official message like email

The last part is like a cassette player playing with the tape off the tape guide Anyway, back to the topic. I think how we look at our working culture depends on how you view the term "work" personally. For me, I'm teaching elementary school kids. No doubt, many times I have to resist the temptation to take off my shoe and throw it right at the kids' faces, but I don't because that will be the end of my career. Bringing work home to be completed is a common thing. Waking up 6am in the morning is also a common thing. If you were in my exact same shoes, will you continue your trek on this career path? If your reply is a "no", then most probably you do not have the passion for handling young kids or in the education sector. But my reply is a "yes" because I love what I am doing despite what I mentioned above. It is because I find this passion very fulfilling to be around with kids and seeing them learn new things from time to time. This gives me a great real sense of satisfaction. So bringing home papers to mark? I'll gladly do it, even if I'm overseas on a holiday. The reason is that I love my job, and I do not wake up every morning to drag myself to work. If you are happy working even if it is past your knock-off time, you do not hold this sense of lament in you. Something to ponder ;)
