CLIP DESCRIPTION:
When Tess (Melanie Griffith) arrives at her new job she expects to be the secretary, until Alice (Amy Aquino) shows her to her window office.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Unhappy with her job and her loser boyfriend, Melanie Griffith takes a secretarial post at a major Wall Street firm. Her boss is Sigourney Weaver, an outwardly affable yuppie whose grinning visage hides a wicked and larcenous propensity for exploiting the ideas of her employees. While Weaver is incapacitated, Griffith is compelled by circumstances to pose as her boss. Her inborn business acumen and common sense enable Griffith to rise to the top of New York's financial circles, and along the way she wins the love of executive (Harrison Ford). Things threaten to take a sorry turn when Weaver returns, but it is she who suffers from the consequences of her own past duplicity. Working Girl was Melanie Griffith's breakthrough film, proving than she was more than just the off-and-on "significant other" of Don Johnson. The film was later adapted into a brief TV series, starring a pre-Speed Sandra Bullock.

They cut out the "you don't have to fetch me coffee.." part. Believe it or not, that's the part I remember most about this scene. Tess finally being in a position of authority, and not abusing it because she knows how it feels.

Maj Mahal Tess would be the type of boss I would work for she is somebody that doesn’t abuse their authority and take you for granted by taking advantage of your kindness and generosity, unlike Katherine she took the credit for Tess’ idea and tried to pass it off as her own. Some bosses talk down to you then treat you like dirt and make you feel like that you are nothing to them. Then bully and harass you out of your employment to the point where you would quit your job, and then use dirty tricks to get you terminated from your employment.

Yup - "first of all, I don't expect you to fetch me coffee unless you're getting some for yourself. I expect you to call me Tess. And the rest we'll just make up as we go along." Over 30 years since I saw the movie but I can still remember that line :-)

Amen - you realize there are still jerks out there that "still" act as if one has to get coffee for these jerks that wouldn't make coffee themselves until I got there? I thank God I left not because of that but because of the sexual harassment that I endured at this small office. NEVER again did I have to deal with such vulgar display by any man except when I was in my early 20s at a different time at a different office? Men felt they can step over the line each time. This totally grossed me out.

My mom started out as a secretary in the 60s. She got her MBA after my sis and I were born. Sadly she never got that big office, but this scene always makes me think of what she might have gone on to achieve at the workplace had circumstances been kinder to her. When I ask her how she feels about it now, she feels she achieved a lot in life anyway. She continues to win people with her charm and humility, and I aspire to be exactly like that :)

And that's the real gender disparity in employment. It's not that men and women really get paid differently for the SAME work, it's that MOTHERS pay a penalty for the time away from the office and from a perceived lack of focus. It costs them over time.

Not quite as dramatic as how this movie played out, but similar in all the relevant ways… and no I did not need a secretary and no I didn’t coffee fetched. I liked Tess because she wanted to get ahead in the work force and she had great ideas and Katherine Parker used Tess and treated her like a doormat. Tess liked Katherine from the start until she found out that Katherine stole her idea and Katherine Parker said "Two way street and you make it happen!" I remember when Tess was looking at Katherine's computer and said "Two Way Street and you make it happen!" That was a real blow for Tess and she managed to get her idea out there. Tess was honest and Katherine wasn't Also if you want to get ahead in this world just keep your mouth shut and your eyes and ears open don't gossip and keep your head down. Just do your job and leave. Red is power in the business world and when I worked the district managers loved me.

This scene aspect… should have included the entire ending of this movie: But as I am observing Tess as she had just obtained a new position as a co-business executive… she still had the “secretary mentality”, not fully realizing that she had made a previous decision and move that would not only change her life and career… but also a position of which she only “dreamed” about… But when that dream became reality, she nearly had a difficult time processing the reality of what she had just accomplished and achieved.

A backstory for the secretary just hit me, but she used to hold Tess' new job, until she got pregnant, went on maternity leave, asked to be demoted to secretary on returning so she could have time to raise her child. She would probably give valuable guidance for Tess.

Tess was constantly clearing her throat in this movie. So annoying
@daughterofolaf
@daughterofolaf 7 ай бұрын
That’s because Griffith was high on cocaine the whole time (or so I have heard). That throat-clearing is from the “drip” that happens when it is snorted. 😖 I have never done it but that is what I have learned from movies and people I know who have. It makes me cringe to think about.

I find myself quoting this movie ALL THE TIME! I work on the 7th floor of this building all of the offices are empty still from Covid. They remind me of the office in this movie. It’s not New York. But I am so very tempted to redo the scene calling Cin!

Disney meets Wall Street (ah yes, I remember the time a CEO pulled me off an elevator to ask me a questions about work). Working Girl 2 was about Tess becoming a back-stabbing, vastly overpaid gambler of others people's money, blowing it all on BMWs, Rolexes and cocaine, cheating on Jack (and vice-versa) before ending up fired and living with mom and dad after a stay rehab. Or so I heard.
