Working My Howard Gem Rotavator AKA 'Rose'

This video shows my Howard 'Gem' Rotavator. I have brought the machine back to life. Her year of build is 8th August 1950 with a serial number of G17447 and is an early series 3 machine. This can be noted by the quadrangle gear gate. Howard was the Reg Trademark but she was made by Rotary Hoes Ltd in East Hordon Essex. She has a single cylinder BJ (British Junior) engine. I have tried to get the machine back to it's orginal state right down to the waterslide transfers which finish the machine off.

What a little beauty; I have similar; a 1948 model with 600cc BJ. Mine is tidy and running well, but feel, now, I have to do a re-paint! Thanks..SW England.

I just want to say that I love your Howard Rotavators. I have 5 of them over here in the USA. They certainly are the best tillers. I have two G20's with the 9.2hp Wisconsin, a G24 with a 18.2hp Wisconsin twin, a G24 with a 12Hp Howard 360 engine, and a G30 which is getting a V4 Wisconsin engine. I would love to find one with the BJ or JAP engine to add to my collection. Thanks for the videos, I hope one day my machines will look as nice as yours!

Speaking as a long time Gem user (35+ years!) I would be scared to put a machine that shiny anywhere near the soil! Brilliant job.

That's identical to the one I had that was built back in the early 50s. I used mine commercially and got carpal tunnel syndrome from it and donated it to a museum.

ah Rose isnt she a real beauty.i must applaud you on restoring her to her former glory.I am currently in negotiations on a similar filly and i think we shall call her ezzy( short for esmerelda, my first wifes name, god rest her soul) im hoping to pick her up for 50 english pounds.this will be my first machine and it seems to be in good condition, its been lying in an old workshop for many years. ill look for the serial number and maybe you may help to give the age of the beauty. best regards

One tank for the fuel, the other tank for the low ash oil, it burns up the oil as it runs, nice!

We have those tires up in Norfolk I got mine from Fakenham tyres they cost me £100 pounds

What oil are you burning in these 2 strokes?

@@jlo13800 hi bruce do you know what oil is right I use SAE 90 as I in the book hope it right but mines a four stroke engine
