In order for a car to stop without killing the engine, the wheels need to be disconnected from the engine somehow. The clutch allows us to smoothly engage a spinning engine to a non-spinning transmission by controlling the slippage between them. ... A clutch works because of friction between a clutch plate and a flywheel.
What is the working principle of clutch?
Working Principle of Clutch:
When two revolving friction surfaces are brought into contact and pressed, then they are united and start to revolve at the same speed due to the friction force between them. This is the basic principle of a clutch
What is the use of clutch?
The purpose of a clutch is in part to allow such control; in particular, a clutch provides transfer of torque between shafts spinning at different speeds. In the extreme, clutch control is used in performance driving, such as starting from a dead stop with the engine producing maximum torque at high RPM
What happens when your clutch stops working?
Common symptoms of a failing master or slave clutch cylinder include the clutch going all the way to the floor, not being able to shift gears and a brake fluid leak. Clutch Fluid Leak: Clutch fluid is actually just brake fluid
When should I press the clutch in my car?
This is because when RPM gets too low, the car's engine lags a bit. Moreover, the accelerator also gets less responsive. In other words, you should use press clutch and change the gear before turning the car around the corner or during a sudden decrease in your vehicle's speed
how clutch works
Most cars use a friction clutch operated either by fluid ( hydraulic ) or, more commonly, by a cable. When a car is moving under power, the clutch is engaged. A pressure plate bolted to the flywheel exerts constant force , by means of a diaphragm spring, on the driven plate .
What happens when you press the clutch?
When the clutch pedal is depressed, the throw-out bearing moves toward the flywheel, pushing in the pressure plate's release fingers and moving the pressure plate fingers or levers against pressure plate spring force. This action moves the pressure plate away from the clutch disc, thus interrupting power flow
How the clutch works in a manual car?
The clutch connects the two shafts so that they can either be locked together and spin at the same speed, or be decoupled and spin at different speeds. ... A clutch works because of friction between a clutch plate and a flywheel.
What is the main function of the clutch?
Most automotive clutches are a dry single plate clutch with two friction surfaces. No matter the application, the function and purpose of a clutch is to transmit torque from a rotating driving motor to a transmission. Clutches require a mode of actuation in order to break the transmission of torque

Due to heavy load some time engine will stall. To over come this problem Torque converter is designed. No direct contact. It is through hydraulic. Even tranmission stalls engine will be running.
