I have basically that same mower although 48" and a bit older...bought new in 1987, never used commercially, always garage stored and still has original belts and tires. One of the most reliable and best built pieces of equipment I have ever owned. Always wondered how that transmission worked...now I know...thank you

For the tranny you always have the option to remove the neutral switch and pump in the “Peerless” grease, provided you don’t have any damage. Great video, you can’t beat a belt drive walk behind.

Good job. I would have just ordered a new transmission, only a couple/few hundred dollars. But I'm lazy.

Yeah I was debating that, but I didn't want to risk having a possibly lower quality aftermarket one on there, as well as being able to save some money!

@@everythingmechanical_yt What you did to your transmission was informative and helpful! If You take it easy shifting, and every 750-1000 hours - take your trans apart, clean it, and replace the grease...it will probably last a long time.

I seem to have little to no power on right wheel when on even the slightest incline. Is this transmission or belt? The handles are also quite a stretch when trying to turn or stop. That normal with average sized hands?
@everythingmechanical_yt2 жыл бұрын
Shounds like a belt slipping issue, try adjusting and/or replacing the belts. And yes, the handles being a bit of a stretch is normal

What do you think about a scag 48” for $650 needs a transmission but looks almost new. Think it’s a good deal to buy and put a new transmission on it?
@everythingmechanical_yt3 жыл бұрын
It could be. What deck is on it? If not the velocity or advantage then it would be older. Not a deal breaker though their all great mowers. Next does it drive still? If not it may need more drive train components. If it can still move under its own power at all and you can verify that it is just the transmission then that wouldn't be a bad deal. If I were you though I would rebuild the original transmission since it would probably be better quality than an aftermarket and probably last longer
@UnderTheFallsCorals3 жыл бұрын
@@everythingmechanical_yt it’s a velocity. Just won’t engage when put into forward gear. I’m going to try and get it for 500

I haven’t even went to see it yet. Saw the ad and in the market for a mower. This is what the ad says. “Scag Commercial walk behind 48" mower. Comes with grass catcher. Motor runs great. It does not engage when put into forward gear. Could be a belt or transmission. Priced to sell as is. I'm going to fix it eventually and will raise the price accordingly”

On these belt drive models there is no true reverse, just reverse assist. As long as it doesn't sip going forwards you should be good

Somebody near me is selling a used Scag 60" Advantage hydro walk behind. I think it's a monster. I would love to take a look, I need a new mower. I'm 51 and I walk a lot for my job, So I'm not crazy about walking to mow our lawn. His mower has a beat up sulky, but still I would have to get used to it. And my wife may need to use it too and she has no experience with a walk behind. I've been leaning towards a zero turn for these reasons. But a walk behind is better suited for our property, we have shrubs and young trees with low branches. Also no way would a 60" zero turn fit in our garage, but a 60" walk behind would. And used would be far cheaper. So, I have a tough decision!
@everythingmechanical_yt4 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah I have seen some of those up for sale and if I wasn't limited by the width of my trailer, I would consider buying one! I personally like the walk behinds as I feel much safer around hills as they are basically impossible to flip!
@chrisradano4 жыл бұрын
@@everythingmechanical_yt I bought the 60" Scag walk behind! It's a monstrosity. But it takes up less room in my garage than a 60" zero turn. Price new is $9000, overkill lawn mower I paid 2K for a 2005 model. My wife said she won't use it!

@@everythingmechanical_yt Thanks! No hour meter. Looks like it was used pretty heavily. The guy I bought the mower from got it from a lawn care company, but he used it on his own grass for a couple months. So besides a tune up, and probably new tires, I know it runs. I touched up a lot of the paint with a brush so now it's a little prettier, lol. Fine for a light duty mower for now, but a serious piece of heavy equipment.

I have one of these that pulls slightly to the left when it’s going forward. Which adjustment would adjust that?
@everythingmechanical_yt3 жыл бұрын
Usually that means a drive belt is slipping. Try spraying a mild degreaser like simple green or soapy water on the drive belts then rinsing. Once it dries try it. If that doesn't fix it, they are probably worn and need to be replaced. You can usually see once their worn out. Just make sure you replace both of them otherwise it will still pull one direction
