This is Gentry Oswalt, fan of Steve Summers and PROUD owner of the Adcock & Shipley IES-J variant horizontal mill!!! A little bit of a background on myself: I am 17 years old, and I have worked at a machine shop in East Tennessee for the last two years. Since I started working there I have became really interested in machining, and would love to open my own machine shop someday. Also, I have recently got into 3D printing this past year, and bought a Creality Ender 3 Pro FDM printer and have been practicing with small projects and prototypes. I am working on setting up my social media and getting a KZbin channel started via Gentry Machine & Print Works. I plan to document cleaning, tear-down, and restoration work on all of the equipment. Our next step is trying to get a rotary phase converter since I do not have access to 3 phase power. Steve, thanks again for the opportunity to purchase the Adcock & Shipley horizontal mill!! I really appreciate you helping me get a little further along into the trade as a machinist! Gentry

Comes a time when building a flatbed for your truck is the right choice. Mid nineties I rebuilt a Toyota pickup with the then new chinese parts. Brand new a front fender which fit perfectly was $30! Just needed primer and paint. Don't know how they are today but I would sure check before patching.
@dogleg66693 жыл бұрын
I agree when it comes to bed repairs best to cut your losses and build a flat bed. Will probably suit you better for hauling wood and supplies anyway.
@douglasbollinger86783 жыл бұрын
Years ago when I was working in a quarry we had a very handy shop-made flat bed with removable stake sides on a Chevy of similar vintage. Even in that extreme service, the bed easily outlasted the rest of the truck. There's probably a few such flat beds set aside at junk yards, but probably not many are short beds.
@zd5333 жыл бұрын
Yup, I'd definitely go with a flat bed. Very useful and looks great, IMO
@kevinbowlby78353 жыл бұрын

@TyphoonVstrom3 жыл бұрын
Or, just buy some corrugated, galvanised sheet steel, cut out the old floor and weld that in. Cheap, durable and you won't care about dinging it up. Tub beds are great, just throw stuff in and it stays there. Don't have to worry about securing most stuff.

Happy Saturday Steve and Grits! Next time you move a pallet or machine base around, use pipes under the base. When the base clears a pipe, pick it up and put in front. I have moved Bridgeports and Lathes this way. You can pick the machine or pallet up and put pipes under to start. This video was so interesting, my Grits cot cold before I remembered them. Thanks for sharing and teaching, God Bless.

Re. moving that mill up onto the trailer... I've found that laying down two sheets of plastic under the pallet and up the ramp will act like you slathered up the whole thing with grease. It will slide smooth and easy and not leave a mess to clean up.
@jimurrata67853 жыл бұрын
Cheap LDPE cutting boards from the dollar store make great sliders. If they are the thin ones you can even bend them up the front of a pallet and tack a screw in so you don't have to mind them while operating the winch or tractor.

I have a couple arbors from a 30 taper lying around there are no use to me. Perhaps your viewers, myself included, would be happy to contribute a couple end mills or parallels, etc. Judging from the comments, your audience seems to really value getting the next generation interested in this hobby. Sort of like the first toolbox series that Keith fenner used to do. What do you think? Should we surprise him with a care package? You have your work cut out for you Steve. I completely removed all the rust from a 1978 Chevy 3/4 long box back in the 90’s. I live in north eastern Washington state which is a desert region so my truck didn’t have nearly as much rust as yours however it was still there and in the same places. I used after market body panels and had to make the floor pans because at the time there was no replacement. It was a fun project at the time, not sure I would tackle something like that again. Will be awesome to see you truck when you get it done. Love your channel.

Truck starter noise. The gap between the od of the flywheel ring gear and the bare shaft of the starter is 0.125" easily measured with the lower rock guard plate off the bell housing. Less than 1/8" add a shim to the top of the starter and recheck. More than 1/8" add a shim to the outer side only. If you can use a file to dress the burrs off the flywheel ring gear. It will be so nice to start without grinding.

Steve, it's time you discovered oil. Fluid film and Wool Wax will stop rust from spreading. If you're looking for an inexpensive alternative, just spray on bar and chain oil. They sell, or you can make, rigid and flexible extensions that allow you to spray into inaccessible spaces like inside the rocker panels. Drive down some dirt roads when you finish application and the dust will bond to the oil so it's not so messy.

There are rust converting primer paints that bind surface rust up and prevent further rusting. They've been around for almost 40 years and affordable for homeowners for about 25. If you repair a part to structurally sound, or it's sound enough after you remove any big flakes / loose rust, you cam save the item. This can come in handy when used wisely, saving time & money.
@jonathan14273 жыл бұрын
Yeah I was thinking wire wheel, rust converter, mesh & fiberglass, paint, cavity wax. Bad idea?
@chemech3 жыл бұрын
@@jonathan1427 I've never seen really good repairs made on steel with fiberglass. Rust-rot is like cancer... it goes a lot further than what you can obviously see... that said, if you can catch it early, sometimes you can use the converting primer as chemotherapy.

I have only ever bought one truck new in my life. It was the most stressful ownership experience I ever had until it got its first serious scratch / dent. Normally I would be super pissed it being new and all, but I actually felt more relieved than anything else. If you're not comfortable banging up your truck, it's not a decent work vehicle. The moment you stop stressing about cosmetics is the moment that the truck becomes a useful tool.

Pull the truck outside one afternoon, and spray all that metal inside the panels with boiled linseed oil, and leave it to drip and cure for a week. The rust where it has the oil on it will stop, and it will keep the parts that are not yet rusting from starting for a long time.

In my '02 S-10 the inner door hinge brackets are Welded(!) to the pillar. The repair concept is that GM makes kits that provide bolting brackets which require pulling the dash and using a template to drill holes into the pillar and fish threaded plates up behind which then accept bolts through from the brackets. Automation auto jig fixtured brackets that don't allow for tiny if any adjustment to the door gaps. Probably installed by robots. Just toss the truck.

Given the rust on the outside of the pick up box and the rust in the floor, my vote would be to let your scrap metal guy take the whole box and put a flat bed back there. It may be a wee bit of prejudice on my part since my uncles used F-250 rack bodies as their work trucks when I was a kid. They added an E-150 van in the 70s so they didn’t have to unload their tools every night. The rack body remained the vehicle of choice for trips to the lumber yard, the dump, and coffee runs.
